Management Practices for Ruminants

I. Introduction
Ruminants are domesticated animals with a four-chambered stomach and
the capacity to ferment plant matter high in cellulose for cellulose digestion.
Ruminant management procedures comprise handling and caring for the animals to
maintain their well-being and productivity. This entails provide suitable habitat, food,
and medical attention in addition to putting disease and parasite prevention
measures into place. Monitoring the animals' behavior, reproduction, and growth is
another essential component of effective management procedures. The
management techniques of ruminants are now more crucial than ever to ensure
effective and sustainable production while upholding animal welfare and
environmental sustainability due to the rising demand for animal products.

I. Objectives
1. To be oriented on the different ruminant care and management practices.
2. To know the importance behind each production management practices.

II. Methodology
1. Actual visit to the DAS goat and sheep project, and Cattle barn
for the conduct/demonstration of the following activities:
a. Animal restraining (small and large ruminants)
b. Hoof trimming
c. Wool sheering
d. Drenching
e. Deworming
f. Feeding of animals and cleaning of the animal housing
g. Record maintenance
h. Other activities in the animal project

1. What are the factors to consider when trimming the hooves of a goat?
 Factors to consider when trimming the hooves of a goat include:
Frequency of trimming, timing of trimming, tools, technique,
condition of hooves,restraint and cleanliness.

2. What is the importance of biosecurity in the safeguarding the health and welfare
of both the animal and the farm workers?
 Biosecurity is crucial for ensuring the safety and welfare of farm
workers as well as livestock since it safeguards human health,
lowers the use of antibiotics, enhances animal welfare, and
safeguards the environment.
