CONSTRUCTION SITE VISIT
OBJECTIVES
1. To find out the application of Electrical Engineering in construction works
2. Prepare Bill of Quantities
INTRODUCTION
Site visit is an important activity that exposes learners to what takes place in the field. In this case,
the site being visited was the swimming pool construction site, a sporting facility in its initial stages
of construction.
ACTIVITY
Students were taken to a construction site and shown what normally takes place before and during
construction works by a team comprising of Lab technician, Site Engineer, Contractor and
Foreman.

HIERARCHY
1. Client. He is the owner and boss of the construction project. He is the funder.
2. Architect. He does the drawing works and comes up with a plan or visualization of the
project on paper.
3. Construction team. Includes the contractor, Site Engineer, Electrical and Mechanical
Engineers. All these work under a Civil and Structural Engineer / Site Engineer.
4. Contract Implementation Committee (CIC). Does implementation, checks, inspection and
corrections where necessary.
IN CASE OF FIRE OUTBREAK CAUSED BY ELECTRICITY
1. Cut off the electricity. If the device that is causing the electric fire is found and the cord and
outlet can be safely reached, unplug it.
2. Add sodium bicarbonate
3. Remove the oxygen source. It may be put out by removing the oxygen source with clothing
or heavy blanket if the fire is small and safe to do so.
4. Don’t use water to put it out. Water conducts electricity.
5. Check fire extinguisher. Electrical fires are class C meaning an extinguisher that is
appropriate with this type of fire will be needed.
IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE ELECTRICAL FIRE
1. Get out.
2. Close the door as you leave to contain the fire.
3. Do not enter back until the fire has been contained by firefighters.
APPLICATIONS
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
1. Electrical works forms basis for construction. The facility needs light and sockets hence need
for wiring and setting up relevant electrical socket outlets by an electrician / electrical engineer.
2. A strong electrical system is essential to power the advanced and heavy – duty tools and
machinery needed during construction. The electrician needs to ensure the safety of all the
people involved even if it is a temporary set up.
3. Fixed wiring. It is essential for all the electrical activities necessary on the site. This includes
ensuring all the vital spots of a construction site have electrical power to use the heavy – duty
equipment. This means installing power cables, sockets, distribution boards, etc.
4. Electrical switchboards. A switchboard is an essential hub that is necessary to direct the
electricity stream for the needs at the site. This will act as a source of power for the entire site
with well – defined sections like the main power unit and that necessary for the distribution.
5. Circuit breakers. A construction site also requires basic safety measures to be implemented.
An electric shock is one of the most common threats; this can be avoided by installing a circuit
breaker in place. This type of system is designed to minimize the risk and protect those working
with electrical devices.
BILL OF QUANTITIES
1. During the construction stage, a bill of quantities is used to provide a basis for the valuation of
the completed works for the purposes of making periodic payments to the contractor who has
been awarded the contract and proceeded with its execution.
2. Bill of quantities are used for standardizing the tendering process, providing a clear and precise
method to value the project, enable consultants to analyze prices of various individual items
and overall costs and assist quantity surveyors in verifying if individual contractors have
submitted genuine tenders compliant with tender information.
3. The bill of quantities gives a basic idea of the project by providing the quantities to tenderers.
It also describes the scope of work to be completed. See attached Bill of Quantities for the
above temporal structure.
CONCLUSION
The aims of the activity were achieved since I was personally able to understand what takes place
before, during and after construction and more so, the electrical application. I was also able to
understand how to prepare a bill of quantities.
