1. Operation

The setting up and operation of this product shall be performed by

qualified and specially trained personnel only.

We strongly emphasise that any unauthorised modification of the software or the setting variables
may lead to dangerous malfunction of the equipment.

We explicitly refuse any responsibility for damage caused by improper use, set up and configura-
tion of this product.

Any internal software modification of an excitation system may only be performed by qualified
personnel to avoid disturbances in the power system.

2. Introduction and Set Up

The software program ELTAS enables operation of the Digital Regulator System GMR3. It
is a menu operated program requiring the DOS operating system. All user operations with
the ELTAS program are performed on-line in the GMR3, i.e. any modifications carried out
directly in the operating memory of the GMR3 regulator and not on a file or in the PC.

Hardware Requirements:
IBM compatible PC with 1 serial interface
1 serial communication interface cable with pins 2 and 3 crossed, at GMR3-side female plug
connector.

Software Requirements:
MS-DOS operating system
ELTAS, V1.5R 07/96 software diskette

CAUTION

When using the ELTAS program, utmost care and precision has to be applied, since
false parameter values may lead to uncontrollable and dangerous consequences in the ex-
citation system, the generator or the power system.

ADVICE

1. The software on the diskette is stored in the directory A:\ELTAS and by entering
A:\INSTALL all programs are installed directly into the directory C:\ELTAS and started
with GMR3.BAT. Please also refer to item 4. Start of ELTAS.
2. To work with the ELTAS software the PC has to be connected on-line with GMR3 via the
serial interface in order to ensure that any data modifications are also stored in the me-
mory of the GMR3.

3. Preconditions

First, the serial interface connection between GMR3 and the PC has to be made. The DIP
switch positions on module MRB2 have to be selected according to the figure below. Please
also refer to descriptive literature “Technical Documentation GMR3“.

4. Start of ELTAS

To start the program the serial interface driver COMDRV.EXE has to be loaded. Subse-
quently the program ELTAS.EXE can be started.

By means of the batch file GMR3.BAT the interface driver software is loaded automatically
and ELTAS.EXE is started. Therefore only GMR3.BAT has to be entered in order to start
the ELTAS program !

The selection of the serial communication port is done in the ELTAS menu CONFIG >>>
OPTIONS where the port can be selected. The default option is COM1.

5. Using the ELTAS Program

The program is menu operated. Please note that most functions are used for system con-
figuration and programming. The use of these functions can cause severe damage and
must not be used by operation personnel. In order to avoid critical faults some functions are
deactivated.

Only the following functions are to be used by operation personnel:

• Watches to view and modify parameters

• Parameter scanneR to view parameters
• Save modified data on EEPROM

6. Watches

With the aid of the Watches several groups of variables can be viewed and individually
modified. The most important Watches for the regulating functions of the excitation system
are stored on diskette and are part of the delivery. If desired, further Watches can be de-
fined by the user.

Loading of a Watch: by entering ALT + W

NOTE

To enter ALT+W the ALT key and the W key have to be pushed simultaneously.

After loading a Watch the following screen will be displayed, e.g. Watch REGULATR.BEO:

Using a Watch: S Start or Stop of scanning

V Entering of a new (modifying of a) Parameter Value -
to be performed with utmost care
L Loads a different Watch
W Creates a new Watch
Q Closes a Watch

Additional commands: D Defines a new parameter

T Text (i.e. comments) can be entered
C Communication parameters can be entered

List of the available Watches:

Actual values ACTVALUE.BEO

Set values CALIBRAT.BEO
Current regulator REGULATR.BEO
Voltage regulator REGULATR.BEO
Current limiter IP_LIM.BEO
Tests of inputs INPTEST.BEO
Fault display ERRMASKS.BEO

For further plant specific Watches check the README.TXT file.

7. Parameter Scanner

Similar to the Watch function, the Parameter scanneR is used to view parameters and vari-
ables. Parameter values can not be changed with the scanneR function.

Calling of a Parameter scanneR: by entering ALT + R

NOTE

To enter ALT+R the ALT key and the R key have to be pushed simultaneously.

After the scanner has been called, the designations of the desired parameters can be en-
tered, separated by commas. After pushing the Enter key, the actual parameter values will
be displayed. The values are continuously updated.

8. Error Codes

The following error codes may appear, while working with the ELTAS program:

Error Number Cause Remark

F1 illegal input check and repeat input

F3 illegal input check and repeat input
F4 parameter name illegal legal parameter names: A,C,E,I,P,T,V,X,Y
F5 parameter number illegal check parameter number according to logic or re-
gulator software diagrams and description
F6 parameter name illegal legal parameter names: A,C,E,I,P,T,V,X,Y
F7 write protection move dip switch 4 on card MRB2 to left position
F8 parameter number missing enter correct parameter number
F10 illegal number check and repeat input
F11 illegal sequence of characters check and repeat input
F14 illegal input check and repeat input
F22 parameter does not exist the hardware configuration does not provide such
parameter
F23 illegal input check and repeat input
F25 parameter does not exist the hardware configuration does not provide such
parameter
F26 illegal input check and repeat input
F30 communication Error check link to PC

In case the error message 'ECS188 not ready' appears, the regulator program may not be
running. Reset the regulator at standstill of the generator and restart ELTAS. If the error
message does not disappear check the regulator hardware.

9. Saving of Settings on the EEPROM (Module MRB2)

The modified data are saved in the RAM of the MRB2 module only. To permanently store
the data on the EEPROM the DIP 7 switch (UPD=Update) has to be moved to the right to
(NORM) position and subsequently taken back to the left position! During the modifica-
tions are performed in the EEPROM the LED UPD (Update) will briefly be energised.

10. Terminating the ELTAS program

To terminate the ELTAS program the keys ALT + X have to be pushed. Confirmation of
“Exit ELTAS ?“ is done with the “ Y “ key.

When closing the ELTAS program the most recent configuration is saved in the memory.

11. Restoring Normal Operating Conditions

The DIP switches on module MRB2 have to be moved to their original positions as indicated
below.
