Morpheus grew up partially in the Matrix, a complex computer program designed to emulate real life,
a kind of virtual reality. Luckily, unlike most humans who remain inside the Matrix until their deaths,
Morpheus was taken out of the Matrix at a young age. Unfortunately though, the real world is a
desolate place where the danger of killer robots lurks around every corner. In the movie he stars as the
captain of the Nebuchadnezzar, a large flying ship. The newest member of his crew is Neo, whom
Morpheus believes to be The One, the prophesied person who will save the human race from the robot
tyranny. Humans are harvested like batteries for their energy, and Morpheus is at the forefront of a
secret group of people living in Zion, a free land, where they plan to wage a war against the robots
once and for all. He is challenged to saving the human race. Though this is not entirely up to
Morpheus, as he must first locate The One, and then put all of his faith in that one person, without
truly knowing if he (or she?) will even be able to save them. He has an intense and determined
personality. Morpheus’ commitment to his crew is a unique trait that makes his crew love him as
much as they look up to him for his wisdom and skills. Morpheus is something of a legend in Zion,
the final remaining stronghold of human race for his single-minded dedication to the fight against the
robots.
Trinity
Trinity grew up as a computer hacker in the Matrix, a virtual world built by robots to trick humans
into thinking they are experiencing real life, while the robots farm their human bodies for energy. Not
much is known of Trinity’s childhood. But at some point she finally came into the real world, and
now she’s hell-bent on fighting to make it better. Her job consists mostly of aiding Morpheus in his
quest to find The One within the Matrix, while they struggle to survive deadly robot scouts in the real
world. She is bold, direct, and confident. Trinity isn’t afraid to let her sassy side out. She once
threatens, “Touch me, and that hand will never touch anything again.” She has a sarcastic sense of
humour and a sharp bite. Trinity is someone you definitely want on your side, in part because she’d be
a very dangerous enemy.
Neo
Grew up in the Matrix, as Thomas Anderson. He had a seemingly normal upbringing. But all along he
had been living in a complex computer program designed to emulate real life, a kind of virtual reality
known as the Matrix. His entire childhood was “a figment of his imagination.”He brought to the real
world now, aboard the Nebuchadnezzar, a large flying ship. Morpheus, the ship’s captain, found Neo
in the Matrix and hand-selected him, offering a chance to take a “red pill” and “wake up” from the
Matrix. Neo is thrust into the dismal reality of the present, where robots have taken over and humans
are used as an electrical power source. Neo is an introverted. Neo is a quiet man, who thinks more
than he speaks. He also has no problem learning how to fight and holding his own in a battle. He
quickly rises to the responsibility of saving his friends when they are in danger, and he even begins to
believe that he might be able to save the entire human race.
Agent Smith
He grew as a computer program. Agent Smith had no childhood. He had no birthday and no mother or
father. He was created. By machines. He never ages, never really feels, and therefore is the perfect
program for taking care of business. He is in the Matrix, a complex virtual reality system made to
trick humans into thinking they are living in real life, while they are actually cooped up in pods being
farmed for energy. Agent Smith helps sustain the false reality of the Matrix. He can take control of the
bodies of anyone who is plugged into the system, basically making him something of a superman. He
can also dodge bullets and pull off other superhuman feat. His personality would be . robotic,
villainous, but with a mind of his own. If he was simply a program that did what it was told, he would
never have the idea to go rogue and escape his uniform existence.
The Oracle
Like Morpheus, the Oracle is a trusted figure of wisdom and guidance who helps Neo make sense of
his mission, but the actual scope of her powers is never quite clear. At times, she seems to be able to
control the future, while at other times she seems able only to predict it or offer possibilities. In either
case, her prophecies suggest that the future is predetermined and, therefore, that Neo and the others
have no free will. However, her powers and her role evolve throughout the trilogy, as does our
understanding of her. Eventually, we may question whether she truly knows anything about the future,
or if she is instead simply a good judge of character. The discovery that the Oracle is actually a
program, part of the Matrix itself, complicates our understanding of her abilities even further.
Ultimately, her calm and comforting demeanor may help Neo and the others with their mission almost
as much as an actual prophecy would or does.
