WEALTH MANAGEMENT RECRUITMENT PROFESSIONALS

As most companies have implemented remote work access, we are also seeing many companies move
their hiring process online. As a result, we are seeing companies (ourselves included) switch from face-
to-face to video interviews. If you’re new to video interviewing, check out some of the tips we’ve
outline below.

How to Prepare for Video Interviews:

• As a general rule, you should prepare how you normally would for a face-to-face interview;
do your research on the company. As videos are often less personable, being able to connect
with the person interviewing you becomes more important. Be sure to do your research on
the interviewer – LinkedIn and Google are great tools to use to perform this research. Look
for anything you might have in common (charities or sports teams you support) and anything
that resonates with your values (this can be at both company and individual level). Be sure to
mention it!
• Face-to-face interviews require you to dress the part. Video interviews demand that (at
least the top half..) as well as what’s in the background. Although your personal space is your
own and should not affect your ability to do the job, we all tend to form an initial view based
on first impressions. That’s why we say it’s best to find a place with a neutral background and
ensure it’s free of mess or clutter. That way the interviewer can focus on YOU.
• Good lighting. You would always opt to take photos in good light, right? Videos are no
different.
• If possible, find a quiet spot where you won’t be interrupted by outside noise, housemates,
children, etc. Or at least make sure they’re aware of your interview (you don’t want this to be
you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh4f9AYRCZY)
• Turn off (or put on silent) likely disturbances on your desktop or phone. This way you’re not
distracted by the notifications. Ex. Extra web browsers, email alerts, Whatsapp chats, etc.
• Have your resume, pen and notepad handy for any references or info.
• Having ‘post it’ notes in front or beside you to help remind you of your talking points:
achievements, company info, questions, etc. Just make sure they’re in point form and you’re
not reading off of them.
• Test the camera and make sure you know how to use the technology. Do a trial run with a
friend/ family member to ensure everything works. The last thing you want to do is to find out
your microphone isn’t working 5 minutes before the interview.
• While you’re testing the camera, make sure your computer is at a good height where your
face is in the centre of the screen.

During the Video Interview:

• Look into the camera. Many people end up looking at themselves during the video interviews.
See if you can move your own video closer to the camera.
• Show engagement - smile, nod, gesticulate but try not to fidget, play with your hair, or touch
your face too much.
• Don’t forget to thank the interviewer. Just like you would in a regular face-to-face interview.

• The hiring process may take longer – whilst most teams are working remotely, it may be
harder to get all the right people at the right time on the same page, to make a swift decision.
Ask the recruiter/ hiring manager about their process so you have an idea of what to expect.
If you haven’t heard back (within a week), it’s a good idea to follow up with a call or email.
Most companies value candidates being proactive (professionally proactive).

We hope these pointers will help you with your next video interview. If you have any questions, need
any support, or just need somebody to trial your video, feel free to reach out to your favourite
consultant below or [email protected]. We know this is a tough time for everyone and we
would love to help in ways we know best - by helping you showcase your best self.
