Operating instructions for

AFS air purification devices

1. General
Our AFS devices offer you air purification systems that reflect the cutting edge in terms of technology
and operating safety. The CE symbol of the devices is your guarantee that they comply with the funda-
mental health and safety requirements of EU machinery guideline 89/ 323 EWG, Appendix II A and EU
low voltage guidelines 79/ 23/ EWG; see the EU declaration of conformity in the appendix.
The signs with the notifications, device types (corresponding to device air output) serial number and the
CE number are located on the device doors.

2. Transport/ Transport damage


After the goods have been delivered, they should immediately be inspected in the presence of the ship-
per for completeness in accordance with the delivery documents/ parts lists and for any transport dam-
age. If damage is detected and if any parts are missing this fact should be noted, countersigned by the
shipper and immediately reported to the responsible transport company and to AFS according to the
following schedule:
visible damage: immediately, i.e. without negligent delay.
concealed damage: within one week.
The devices are supplied on disposable pallets. The remaining materials will be delivered in recyclable
disposable packaging and can be sent for recycling by the recipient.
The devices can be transported by forklift (the transport pallet should be left under the device) and with
transport cables if lifting rings are fitted.

3. Device setup and startup


The devices must always be set up vertically on a rigid, preferably non-vibrating underlay.

Required minimum clearance from ceilings, walls, etc. for correct operation:
• Top of device (air outlet): > 800 mm
• Device motor side: > 500 mm
• Door side > 800 mm

 Please note:
If these specifications are not met, we cannot guarantee that the device will function correctly.

Pipeline connections:
In the case of devices with vacuum hoppers for connecting suction pipelines, the connecting line be-
tween the suction components and device should have the greatest possible bend radius (R ≥ 2 * pipe
diameter). To enable condensation to drain away, the connecting line should be installed to slope in the
direction of the suction components or in the direction fo the devices without any slack, so as to prevent
liquid from collecting in the pipelines.
If more than one suction lines are connected to a device, the pipe should branch at the smallest possible
angle to avoid influencing the flow of air.

 A deflector should generally be fitted to the vacuum opening in your processing machines/centers to
catch droplets of cooling lubricant. The clearance from the wall should be approx. 100 mm, while
the overlap of the vacuum opening should be at least 100 mm on all sides.

Siphon:

 Please note the following points because it is not possible to guarantee that the devices will be fully
functional if they are not observed:
There are two round outlets on the underside of the device, each with a ½" hose connector sleeve,
which are used to drain the cooling lubricants separated in the device. To ensure that this liquid can
drain away correctly and to prevent leak air from being drawn in, a siphon connector is to be installed at
every opening, see diagram.

It is essential that the following procedure is adopted:

 The connecting lines between the device and the siphons are to be installed sloping towards the si-
phon, so that they drain safely and no liquid can accumulate (water skins).

 Attach a flexible ½" hose of a fixed pipe with R½" external thread on the two siphon openings (re-
move the sleeve) and form this into a U-shaped or circular siphon.

 The effective siphon height of the U-bend/ circular line must be at least D>200 mm (measured verti-
cally).
The distance between the underside of the device and the upper siphon bend must be H>200 mm
(measured vertically).

 Each of the two siphon openings must be connected separately, otherwise the siphon will not func-
tion. The two drainage lines may only be joined together as one line behind the siphon.

 The two siphons must be filled with cooling lubrication fluid after installation. This also applies after
devices have been at a standstill for longer periods.
(For control purposes: When filling the siphons, liquid must emerge at the bottom from the hose or
pipe line)

 When working in dry conditions, i.e. without liquid in the separating device, the two siphon connec-
tors can be connected to the devices in an air-tight connection.

Electrical connections:
The electrical connections of the components installed in eth devices, such as electric motors, servo
motors, control and monitoring components, are to be connected in line with the manufacturer’s specifi-
cations and the rules of the responsible EVUs. VDE safety provisions must be observed. Electrical work
may only be carried out by a qualified electrician.
The drive motors for the ventilator wheels are all equipped with thermal contacts for motor protection
and should be connected accordingly.
After the fan motor has been connected and before the device is started, it is essential that the direction
of the radial wheel should be checked to ensure it corresponds to the arrow on the front of the de-
vices:

 If one looks at the radial wheel through the blow-out opening from the motor side, you should see it
turn to the left (anti-clockwise) after the motor has been switched on and off briefly. If the radial
wheel turns in the wrong direction (i.e. to the right) then the direction of the motor should be re-
versed electrically (switch the phases).
Safety advice:
Electric motors are components with dangerous parts that carry current and rotate during operation. If
used incorrectly or inadequately maintained, they can cause personal injury or material damage.

 Please note that general work on the devices should only be carried out while the system is
switched off. In addition, the device must be secured to prevent them from being switched back on.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Separator and filter elements (see photo, item -


):
The separator and filter elements are designed so that they can be removed from the side for
cleaning or replacement. Because the service life of the separator and filter elements mainly de-
pends on the level of dirt in the removed air, the level of dirt on the separator and filter elements
should be checked at least once each month and the elements should be cleaned or replaced as
necessary.

Preliminary separator (item )


The maintenance-free preliminary separator is made from a non-corroding woven metal mesh and
can be cleaned/ washed out:
Inspection interval: - if there are visual signs of dirt, i.e. deposits of chippings, gummed oil, wear
debris, grease residue.
- but at least every 4 weeks.
Clean with hot water and grease-dissolving cleaning agents or with a high-pressure cleaner.
When working in dry conditions, carefully beat out / blow out the woven metal mesh.

Preliminary filter/ G 3-F 6-fleeces (item )


Class G 3-F 6 filter fleeces are used as preliminary filters; these should be replaced when dirty.
Inspection interval: - if there are visual signs of dirt, i.e. deposits of chippings, gummed oil, wear
debris, grease residue.
- but at least every 4 weeks.
You can use standard commercial G 3-F 6 class filter fleeces with a thickness of 20 mm to replace
the filter fleeces.

 In the case of intensive industrial processes where a lot of dust is produced (e.g. processes in-
volving minimal lubrication and dry processing) the front filter fleece is subject to increased
stress and can therefore become dirty quicker, so that the maintenance interval is reduced to 2
weeks.

Main separator (item )
The main separator features a highly efficient self-cleaning system and therefore only needs to be
cleaned when there are signs of heavy dirt or clogging.
Cleaning: self-cleaning.
If the main separator is very dirty/ clogged, i.e. deposits of oil and emulsion, gummed oil and fine
dust, the surrounding frame can be opened and the separating plates can be removed.
Clean with hot water and grease-dissolving cleaning agents. Organic solvents should never be
used.

 When assembling the main separator please note that the plates are installed at an offset, i.e.
the holes between two consecutive plates must be offset. In addition, all the plates must be in-
stalled in the filter frame in such a way that the punching/ forming of the holes faces away the
opposite way to the direction of air flow. The air flows in the direction indicated by the arrows
on the filter frame through the holes in the plates. Otherwise the device will no longer work.

H 13-Post filter (item )


The H 13 class suspended particle filter installed as a post filter must be replaced when it is dirty/
saturated or when it drastically reduces suction performance (cannot be cleaned).
Inspection interval: - if there are visual signs of blockages by deposits of oil and emulsion,
gummed oil and fine dust.

 To change a dirty post filter, open the terminal rails with M6 screws, so that the suspended
particle filter can be removed. When installing a new post filter, the rubber sealing strip of the
filter must be located on the suction side (in the terminal area); the filter pockets must be
vertical.

Woven metal mesh-post separator (item ) - alternative to H 13-post filter (item )


The non-wearing post separator that can be used as an alternative to a H 13 post filter is made
from a non-corroding woven metal mesh and, like the woven metal mesh preliminary separator, can
be cleaned/ washed out (e.g. with hot water and grease-dissolving cleaning agents or high-pressure
cleaner).
Inspection interval: - if there are visual signs of dirt, i.e. deposits of chippings, gummed oil, wear
debris, grease residue.
- but at least every 4 weeks.
Clean with hot water and grease-dissolving cleaning agents or with a high-pressure cleaner.
When working in dry conditions, carefully beat out / blow out the woven metal mesh.

 To clean a dirty post filter, open the terminal rails with M6 screws, so that the post separator
can be removed.

4.2 Fan (item )


Fan motor/ runner wheels are largely maintenance free.

 Please note:
In the event of functional faults, please contact AFS.
The fan wheel may never be removed from the motor.

4.3 Siphon (item )


When separating viscous products, there may be a danger that the siphons and drainage lines will
become blocked, so that these should be checked and cleaned as necessary.
Inspection interval: - if there are visual signs of blockages by deposits of oil and emulsion,
gummed oil and fine dust.
- but at least every 4 weeks.
Clean with hot water and grease-dissolving cleaning agents.

 Please note:
After the siphons have been cleaned, they should be refilled with cooling lubicant. If this does
not happen, the AFS device will not operate correctly; see page 2.

5. Maintenance intervals in the overview
The filter elements must be checked when the suction is reduced on the AFS devices, but every 4
weeks at the latest.
Maintenance is to be carried out on the AFS device if some or all of the filter elements-described below
are dirty.
The separator and filter elements are designed to be removed from the side for the purposes of cleaning
or replacement.
Maintenance work may only be carried out when AFS devices are switched off.
