and released in the theatres but the financial success of each movie varies considerably. The
movie industry collected the data of films released in 2005 by major studios. The table below
lists the data consisting of the names of the films released together with their opening
weekend and total gross sales, the number of theatres exhibiting them, and the number of
weeks they stayed in theatres.

Make a managerial report for the above case study. Use the numerical methods of descriptive
statistics to analyse how these variables contribute to the success of a movie.
a) Give a brief description of the following case and mention the objective of the case.
b) Use descriptive statistics for each of the four variables along with a discussion of what
the descriptive statistics tell us about the movie industry.
c) Use tables and charts to present the data and prepare the frequency tables to discuss
how these four variables contribute to the success of a movie.
d) Interpret the measures of central tendency and variation within the context of this
problem. Why should the movie industry be concerned about the central tendency and
variation?
e) What movies, if any, should be considered high-performance outliers and low-
performance outliers by constructing a boxplot. Are the data skewed? If so, how?
f) Present descriptive statistics showing the relationship between total gross sales and
each of the other variables. Use scatter plots to accompany the discussion of these
data and show how each of the variables opening gross sales, number of theatres, and
weeks in theatre release relate to total gross sales.
