1. Website or Application Name: Newsela

URL:https://newsela.com

What is on the site/App: This website offers multiple current events/ news
articles at different reading levels. These articles are offered across
content areas such as ELA, Social Studies, Science, etc. This site also
offers quizzes and writing prompts related to the articles that can be
assigned to students to encourage reading comprehension.

How does this site help you to incorporate reading, writing, or literature
Meaningfully? This site allows for meaningful incorporation by assigning
content relevant to what is currently happening within society. I teach
Social Studies so this is particularly helpful within my content.

How might it help support learning in your teaching, now or in the future?
I would use this site to help build connections between past historical
concepts to current events. When students can have a real-time
reference to relate past concepts too, I find that they have a better
understanding.

2. Website or Application Name: Commonlit

URL: https://www.commonlit.org

What is on the site/App: Common Lit offers fiction and non-fiction texts
organized by grade level. This site also offers reading comprehension
questions to support student engagement.

How does this site help you to incorporate reading, writing, or literature
Meaningfully? By including reading comprehension questions, this site
encourages student engagement. With the wide variety of reading
passages, there is sure to be supplemental text to include alongside
lessons.

How might it help support learning in your teaching, now or in the future?
I would use this site to increase the amount of supplementary text used in
my classroom. By increasing the amount of reading, as well as engaging
in interaction with the text, I can increase the literacy of my students.
3. Website or Application Name: ReadWorks
URL: https://www.readworks.org

What is on the site/App: This site offers passages related to a variety of

contents as well as grade level. It provides the ability to differentiate with
less complex versions, audio versions, and support for ELL and SPED.

How does this site help you to incorporate reading, writing, or literature
Meaningfully? This site has a feature called “paired texts” where two texts
are paired together based on a common topic, theme, or literary
elements. By using paid texts students can make connections, build
cross-context vocabulary, compare and contrast, and identify patterns.

How might it help support learning in your teaching, now or in the future?
ReadWorks has different ways to use and incorporate its content. I would
use the digital class function where students can highlight, annotate, and
work on online assignments.
4. Website or Application Name: Scholastic
URL: https://www.scholastic.com/home

What is on the site/App: Scholastic offers a wide variety of resources to

support student literacy. Apart from the many different books offered,
there are also lesson plans, reading guides, and even author interviews.
The site also offers different book clubs and reading programs.

How does this site help you to incorporate reading, writing, or literature
Meaningfully? This site can help incorporate literacy by encouraging
collaboration with its book club feature. By sharing what everyone is
reading, it can encourage others to pick up a book they wouldn’t normally
go for.

How might it help support learning in your teaching, now or in the future?
I would incorporate a “Class book club” to share what everyone is
reading. I would suggest different books that go along with the topics we
are covering in class.
5. Website or Application Name: Poetry Foundation
URL: https://www.poetryfoundation.org

What is on the site/App: This site offers many different formats for
content. While it offers traditional written passages, it also contains
videos, podcasts, and articles. It also offers lesson plans, activities, and
discussions regarding poetry. There is even a section for “poem of the
day”

How does this site help you to incorporate reading, writing, or literature
Meaningfully? This site can incorporate literacy through short-written
works. Often times students will complain about the length of passages. I
feel as if students can be more engaged and interactive when a passage
is shorter but still informational.

How might it help support learning in your teaching, now or in the future?
I would use this site to incorporate group work or bell work. With group
work, I would find a poem relating to our topic and have students work
together to discuss the meaning and theme. With bell work, if the poem
of the day can be related to our topics, I would have students read it and
answer comprehension questions.
