Essay Ethics

Preventive (negative) ethics focuses on following rules and prohibitions to prevent harm, but this can negatively impact an engineer's character and cause harm if they are unable to provide important information. Aspirational (positive) ethics prioritizes the welfare of the public and improving quality of life, exemplified when an engineer boosts confidence and ensures a project's success, benefiting society. Positive ethics are preferable to negative ethics for engineers to apply.

Civil Engineering Ethics

HOMEWORK #1
Compare and contrast the negative (preventive ethics) and positive (aspirational) face of
engineering by citing an example or situational scenario in the field of Civil Engineering.

In the past few years, engineering ethics is very important for every engineer. These
ethics are applied in engineering by engineers and are very important for the good of society.
Engineering ethics has two faces, negative (preventive) and positive (aspirational). In preventive
ethics, it is focused on the set of rules that are written or stated in the code of ethics. Those
rules are usually in the form of prohibitions or statements. While aspirational ethics focuses on
the welfare of the public. It also prevents violations of safety and improves the quality of
human life.

What makes these faces of engineering ethics a negative and a positive one? First, in
preventive ethics, it usually aims to prevent the professional malpractice and prevent harm in
the public. For me, it is considered a negative face of engineering ethics because it can affect
the character of a professional. For example, when a civil engineer is forced not to provide
information or data in his project without the approval of the contractor or the employer unless
asked by the law or the code itself. By following the code, it may cause harm to the people by
not telling the problems on a project. While aspirational ethics is in positive face of engineering
ethics because it primarily focuses on the welfare of the project. An example of this is when an
engineer is able to communicate and boost the confidence of his people. It will result to a good
performance and great outcome of the project that will be very beneficial to the public. So, to
be a good engineer, you must apply aspirational ethics and must possess a professional
character. Every engineer must practice these ethics because they have a great role in the
society. They provide services that requires honesty, fairness, equity and many other.
