MARINE ENGINEERING INTERVIEW QUESTION AND ANSWER XD

 What are some of the most important skills for a marine engineer?
Example:  “The most important skill for a marine engineer is problem-solving. Marine engineers
solve problems every day. They may be working on a project where they need to find a solution to a
technical issue. Another important skill is communication. Engineers must communicate with clients
and other team members. It’s also important to have math skills because marine engineering
requires some complex calculations.”

 How would you respond if you discovered a problem with the engine while the ship was underway?

Example:  “If I discovered a problem with the engine while the ship was underway, my first priority
would be the safety of everyone on board. If there were any issues with the propulsion or steering
systems, I would immediately stop the ship from moving forward. Then, I would assess the situation
and determine what repairs we needed to make. I would also check for any other potential problems
before restarting the engines.”

 What is your experience with marine engines?

Example:  “I’ve worked with both diesel and gas marine engines in my previous position as an
Engine Cadet. I was responsible for maintaining the engines by checking oil levels, replacing filters,
and cleaning out debris. I also monitored the performance of the engines to ensure they were
running at peak efficiency.”

 Provide an example of a time when you had to troubleshoot an issue with a ship’s engine.

Example: “When I was working on my first ship, there were some issues with the engine’s
cooling system. The captain asked me to fix the issue as soon as possible so we could
continue our journey. After inspecting the engine, I realized that one of the pipes had a small
leak. I ordered a new pipe from the supply store and replaced the old one. This allowed us to
get back on track and complete our voyage.”

 What would you do if you noticed that multiple crew members were ignoring safety protocols while
you were working on the engine?

Example:  “I would first speak with each crew member individually to understand why they were
ignoring safety protocols. If I noticed multiple crew members doing it for the same reason, I would
talk to my supervisor about implementing new policies or training programs to address the issue. If I
noticed that individual crew members were ignoring safety protocols for different reasons, I would
work with them one-on-one to help them understand how their actions could impact their own safety
and the safety of others.”

 How well do you understand the different types of marine engines?

Example:  “There are two main types of marine engines—gasoline engines and diesel
engines. Gasoline engines use gasoline as fuel, while diesel engines use diesel fuel. Diesel
engines are more efficient than gasoline engines because they have higher compression
ratios. They also produce less carbon dioxide emissions and require less maintenance.”

 When performing maintenance on a ship’s engine, do you follow a specific process or method?

Example:  “I always start by reading through all of the instructions for the task at hand. Then
I gather any tools I need and make sure they are in good working order before starting work.
Once I begin, I check my progress frequently to ensure that I am completing each step
correctly. Finally, once I have completed the task, I clean up after myself and put everything
back where it belongs.”
