The following poem is by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Consider the title of this
poem as a guide to meaning.

The Eagle
He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ringed with the azure world he stands.
The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

1. Given the tone of the poem, and noting especially the last line,

His notice sudden is—
The Grass divides as with a Comb—
A spotted shaft is seen—

Patriotism
Breathes there the man with soul so dead,
Who never to himself hath said,
“This is my own, my native land!”
Whose heart hath ne’er within him burned

If such there breathe, go, mark him well;
For him no Minstrel raptures swell;
