Additional student instructions
1. Students must upload their answer scripts in a single PDF file (answer scripts must
not be password protected or uploaded as “read only” files)
2. NO emailed scripts will be accepted.
3. Students are advised to preview submissions (answer scripts) to ensure legibility
and that the correct answer script file has been uploaded.
4. Students are permitted to resubmit their answer scripts should their initial
submission be unsatisfactory.
5. Incorrect file format and uncollated answer scripts will not be considered.
6. Incorrect answer scripts and/or submissions made on unofficial examinations
platforms (including the invigilator cellphone application) will not be marked and no
opportunity will be granted for resubmission.
7. Mark awarded for incomplete submission will be the student’s final mark. No
opportunity for resubmission will be granted.
8. Mark awarded for illegible scanned submission will be the student’s final mark. No
opportunity for resubmission will be granted.
9. Submissions will only be accepted from registered student accounts.
10. Students who have not utilised invigilation or proctoring tools will be subjected to
disciplinary processes.
11. Students suspected of dishonest conduct during the examinations will be
subjected to disciplinary processes. UNISA has a zero tolerance for plagiarism and/or any
other forms of academic dishonesty.
12. Students are provided 30 MINUTES to submit their answer scripts after the official
examination time. Submissions made after the official examination time will be rejected.

1.2 The annual rainfall on a catchment with an area of 600 km2 is 820 mm. The surface
runoff is 330 mm/year and it is calculated that 210 x 105 m3 of water evaporates in a
year. At present 600 x 106 litres of water is abstracted daily from wells. Calculate the
available groundwater in mm/year. (8)

QUESTION 2 [12 MARKS]
2.1 Calculate the discharge of a trapezoidal channel with a bottom width of 6.069 m, side
slope 1:1, flow depth of 1 220 mm, slope of 0.0009 and Manning’s coefficient of 0.025.
QUESTION 3 [20 MARKS]
Analyse the flow, for a 100 cm wide rectangular channel with a crump weir. The
following estimation have been made:
• The crest is 45 cm above the channel bottom.
• The height of the upstream water level is 250 mm
3.1. Use the step by step method to calculate the discharge through the crest crump
weir. Do only 4 iterations. (15)
3.2 Name two flow measuring devices that can be used to measure flow. Do not
mention the crest crump weir that was given in this question. (2)
3.3 Discuss what you would use the flow measurement data for? (3)
