QUIZ 3. Solve the following problems on an A4 sheet of bond paper. Box only your final answer.
Any form of erasure/alteration is considered wrong. Use one (1) bond paper for your complete
solution and final answer, and one (1) bond paper for scratch.
1. Compute the heat gain for a window facing southeast at 32o north latitude at 10 A.M.
central daylight time on August 21. The window is regular double glass with 13 mm air
space. The glass and inside draperies have a combined shading coefficient of 0.45. The
indoor design temperature is 25oC, and the outdoor temperature is 37oC. Window dimensions
are 2m wide and 1.5m high.
2. The window in problem 1 has a 0.5m overhang at the top of the window. How far will the
shadow extend downward?
3. Compute the instantaneous heat gain for the window in problem number 1 with the external
shade in problem number 2.
4. Compute the instantaneous heat gain for the south wall of a building at 32o north latitude
on July 21. The time is 4pm sun time. The wall is brick veneer and frame with an overall
heat transfer coefficient of 0.35 W/m2-K. The wall is 2.5m by 6m with a 1m by 2m window.
