The software development company has produced new tax software to help individuals and small businesses with tax calculations and filings related to new tax laws. However, the software president knows it contains bugs. Releasing the software quickly could capture more of the market, but bugs may cause incorrect tax filings and penalties. From the perspective of moral character, the company has an obligation to ensure the software complies with tax laws and protects user privacy and data. All bugs should be fixed before release according to professional ethics codes. Ultimately, the company is responsible for any issues caused by the bugs in their software.

ICT521- IT Professional Practice 2 nd Ethical Test Case - Short Assignment 1

(Group: 5)
Scenario 2:
A software development company has just produced a new software package that incorporates new
tax laws and calculates taxes for both individuals and small businesses.
The president of the company knows that the program has a number of bugs. He also believes the
first firm to put this kind of software on the market is likely to capture the largest market share.
The company widely advertises the program. When the company actually ships a CD, it includes a
disclaimer of responsibility for errors resulting from the use of the software. The company expects it
will receive a number of complaints, queries, and suggestions for modification. The company plans
to use these to make changes and eventually issue updated, improved, and debugged versions.
The president argues that this is general industry policy and that anyone who buys version 1.0 of a
software knows this and will take proper precautions.
Because of bugs, a number of users may file incorrect tax returns and be penalised by the Australian
Taxation Office (ATO).
You need to consider the moral theories/stances from the company’s Board of Directors’ point of
view.

The second scenario was chosen by our group, and we discussed every possible moral position.
For further clarification or discussion, I will take the moral attitude of Character.

Character can be seen of as the subset of individual distinctions that are important to morality,
or as an individual's propensity to think, feel, and act in an ethical or unethical manner.

From my perspective, the organization is producing software that aids tax filers in filing their
returns in compliance with the new tax law and calculating their taxes accordingly. So, it is the
company's job to uphold the standards and legality in order to ensure that the software they
are releasing is correct and functional in line with applicable tax legislation. In compliance with
the law governing the privacy of user data, the user's data is also safe and secure.
In my opinion the company has to remove all the bugs and errors from the software by
following the professional code of ethics and the president has to make a decision perspective
to company favor as well as in client favor according to professional ethics.
In conclusion will all the term of ethics the group made the decision that the company and
owner is answerable for bugs in the software and also for the lose of their clients.
