INTRODUCTION Filipinos has one of the best traits in the world one of you must know. Although they have been colonized by several countries,
core values from their ancestors remained intact and is still applied up to this time.

The Philippines is a meeting point for cultures from all over Asia and the Pacific because it has been a
crossroads between east and west and the merging of cultures reflects the country’s culture and its people. China, the
United States, and Spain mainly influence the modern Filipino identity. Though Filipinos are racially similar to Malays but
in terms of culture they are more like Spaniards. Thus, it could be claimed that Filipinos are the most hot-bloodied and
brave citizens in the tropical Asian cultures.

Filipinos has one of the best traits in the world one of you must know. Although they have been colonized by
several countries, core values from their ancestors remained intact and is still applied up to this time.

THE MOST WELL KNOWN TRAITS AND ATTITUDES OF THE FILIPINO

POSITIVE TRAITS
1. Hospitality - This is one of the most popular qualities of Filipinos. Foreigners who have gone to the Philippines find
themselves falling in love for their hospitality. It's a different kind of values which already existed thousands of
years ago
2. Respect - This is often observed not just from younger people but also from older ones.
a. Po and Opo - These words are spoken by the Filipinos when talking to elders, or in order to show respect to person
in authority.
b. Pagmamano - Another way of showing respect to the elders when greeting them. This is donr by putting their
elder’s hand on their forehead.
c. Filipinos also show respect at work by making a bow to their employers.
3. Strong Family Ties and Religious - Filipinos value their families so much that they tend to be so intact.
4. Generosity and Helpfulness - This is observed when one person has nothing, and they tend to share what they have
to them.
5. Strong Work Ethics - Filipinos are hardworking people to the fact that they are willing to work several times to almost
whole day just to provide the needs of their families.
6. Loving and Caring - Filipinos are the sweetest and loving people in the world.

NEGATIVE TRAITS
1. Fatalism - An attitude of "what goes around, comes around" or "come what may." We have a tendency to surrender
our future to fate. We often accept bad news or circumstances without trying to stop or change them. Also,
constantly expecting the worst can get pretty depressing.
2. Maňana Habit (Procrastination) - This is the Filipino habit of leaving for tomorrow what can be done today. They tend
to postpone their actions for a later time thus reducing accomplishments. Filipinos are fond of saying “bukas na
lang” or “sa susunod na lang” due to laziness.
3. Crab Mentality - This is an attitude of some Filipinos where they end to push each other down to clear the way for
their own gain.
4. Hypocrisy (“Pakitang-tao”) - Filipinos are sensitive to criticisms on their own self-esteem and intuitively sharp to the
self-esteem of others as well. Anything that hurts one’s self-esteem is not allowed because it endangers smooth
interpersonal relationships and harmony in society.
5. Ningas cogon - These are the excitement to do or accomplish something is lost and we become too lazy to finish
what had started or in other words leaving our work either half-baked or unfinished.
6. Tardiness (Filipino time) - Related to the mañana habit, Filipino time refers to the Filipinos’ own unique brand of time,
which is known to be minutes or hours behind the standard time. In other words, we tend not to observe
punctuality at all.
7. Gossiping - Filipinos are fond of talking about others’ business. It is not true that only women are into gossiping. Even
men can also be nosy on other people’s lives. Sadly, this does not bring any good to the subjects. Secrets are
brought out; failures and flaws are emphasized; and relationships are destroyed. Worse, as gossips are passed
around, they tend to be twisted until the final story becomes too far from the original—thus, causing more
damage.
8. Blaming - Filipinos can sometimes be too self-righteous. When mistakes happen, we do not want to take the blame,
so instead we point at others. This shows how we can be irresponsible for our actions. This attitude destroys
teamwork, and reliability becomes an issue.
9. Selfish (being insensitive of others) - This habit could be a result of having too many things on mind, we become
insensitive to the needs of other people because we need to focus on ourselves first. However, this country
could be an easier place to live in if we were thoughtful enough to show kindness to one another.
10. Disobedience to Simple Rules and Institutions - We should also strive to start change in ourselves by being
disciplined citizens even in the smallest ways.
11. Attention Taker - It is natural for Filipinos to attract attention by standing out as we are a fun and people loving race.
Nevertheless, it is a different thing to be an “epal” or “kapalmuks”— simply, being an attention grabber.
12. Being Onion-Skinned or Too Sensitive - Another habit or attitude that we need to change is our being too prideful
which usually results to being oversensitive.
13. Living beyond their means (Social Climbing) - One of the reasons why a lot of Filipinos live in poverty is because of
overspending. Since most people want to live an elite lifestyle, many resort to social climbing or living beyond
their means.
14. Passivity (Lack of Leadership) - Filipinos’ lack of initiative for change is also one reason why our country does not
progress. We keep on complaining against the government and other societal issues.
