DIRECT VARIATION
When two variables are related in such a way that y = kx , the two variables are said to be in direct
variation.
Expression of direct variation:

1 y = kx

y y1 y2 y3
1 = k or = = = = k (constant)
x x1 x2 x3

Geometric interpretation: y = kx is a special linear equation, where the y -intercept is ( 0, 0 ) . In the x -

plane, k is the slope of the graph.

INVERSE VARIATION
When two variables are related in such a way that xy = k , the two variables are said to be in inverse
variation.

1 The values of two variables change in an opposite way, that is, as one variable increases, the other
decreases.

2 The product k is unchanged.
