What This Module is About
Introductory Message
Welcome to the Science 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Modes of
Reproduction.
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators
from public schools to assist you, the teacher or facilitator, in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.
To the facilitators:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You
also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their
own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.
To the parents:
As vital partners in education, your support to your children’s learning at home, is a
great factor to ensure that they will become successful in what they do. As parents,
you are expected to monitor your children’s progress while they are accomplishing the
tasks in this module while at the same time, ensuring that they learn independently.
The objectives set for this learning material will be certainly accomplished with your
steadfast guidance and support.
To the learners:
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.
Furthermore, it is our objective that you will have fun while going through this material.
Take charge of your learning pace and in no time, you will successfully meet the
targets and objectives set in this module which are intended for your ultimate
development as a learner and as a person.
How to Learn from this Module
To achieve the objectives cited above, you are to do the following:
• Take your time reading the lessons carefully.
• Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities and exercises diligently.
• Answer all the given tests and exercises.

Modes of Reproduction
Lesson 1
What I Need To Know
LEARNING COMPETENCY CODE
Differentiate asexual and sexual reproduction in terms of: S7LT-IIg-7
a. Number of individuals involved; and
b. Similarities of offspring to parents
Objectives: At the end of this module, you will be able to:
1. Differentiate asexual and sexual reproduction in terms of the number
of individuals involved; and
2. Distinguish the similarities of offspring to parents in both modes of
reproduction.
What’s In
Reproduction is important to maintain the continuity of species (organism of the
same kind – e.g. specie of dog). To continue their own kind, organisms must
reproduce. In this module your will learn the two modes of reproduction and its
differences.
What’s New
Group the following terms to where it belongs - sexual or asexual. Write it in
the appropriate column in the table below.
Conjugation Budding Vegetative Propagation
Pollination Regeneration Binary Fission
Spore Formation Fertilization Seeds

SEXUAL ASEXUAL
What Is It
Reproduction is an essential biological process in which an organism produces
a new individual. Living things might be extinct when they can no longer reproduce.
There are two modes of reproduction. These are asexual and sexual
reproduction.
I. Asexual Reproduction
Asexual reproduction is a mode of reproduction that involves only one
parent. It does not need sex cells or gametes (egg and sperm) to reproduce.
Methods of Asexual Reproduction
Methods of Asexual Description Example Organisms
Reproduction
Vegetative -an asexual reproduction in plants Leaves – Katakataka plant
propagation where new individual (offspring) is Stem –cassava, malunggay
produced from a single parent. It uses Rhizome – ginger
plant parts like leaves, stem, rhizome, Tuber – ube
tuber, bulb, suckers, runner(stolon) Bulb – onion
and corm as planting materials. Suckers – banana
Runner – Bermuda grass
Corm - gabi
Binary Fission - Cell divides to form two identical Amoeba
daughter cells. Each daughter cell Bacteria
continues to grow until it becomes as Paramecium
large as the parent cell.
Budding - a new individual may form as an Yeast
outgrowth or bud from specialized Hydra
areas of a body of parent organism. Sponges
The bud separates from the parent and
becomes a new individual
Spore Formation - Spore is a reproductive cell cap able Molds
of developing into a new individual Ferns
without fusion with another Mushroom
reproductive cell.
Regeneration/ - The parent organism can be divided Starfish
Fragmentation into many pieces and each piece will Planaria
develop into a complete individual.

II. Sexual Reproduction
Sexual reproduction is a mode of reproduction that involves two individuals
belonging to opposite sex – male and female. Parents produce reproductive cells
called gametes (sperm & egg cells).
Gametes from the two parents unite in a process called fertilization. The
fertilized cell is referred to as a zygote which develops into a new organism.
There are different ways on how some organisms such as microorganisms,
plants and animals reproduce sexually.
Sexual Reproduction in Some Microorganisms (e.g. Spyrogyra)
Conjugation
During conjugation, a bridge forms between two cells of two Spirogyra filaments
lying side by side. The contents of one cell pass into the other cell through the bridge,
emptying the other cell. The contents of both cells combine in the other cell and form
the zygote. This zygote secrete a substance that forms a wall around itself for
protection against unfavorable environmental conditions (e.g. when the pond dries up).
When conditions become suitable for growth and development, the zygote grows into
a new individual.
Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants
Most plants reproduce sexually through its reproductive parts – the flower. A
single flower may have the male and female parts necessary for sexual reproduction
to occur. Flowers have parts that are directly involved in sexual reproduction.
Stamen – the male part
a. Anther – produces pollen grains (containing the sperm)
b. Filament – holds anther
Pistil – the female part
a. Stigma – receives the pollen grains
b. Style – slender stalk that connects the stigma and ovary
c. Ovary – produced ovule (egg cell)
Pollination – the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to stigma. Each pollen forms
a tube that grows down through the pistil and reaches the ovule in the ovary. One of
the sperm nuclei in the pollen tube unites with the egg nucleus in the ovule to form a
zygote. The other sperm nucleus combines with another bigger nucleus in the ovule
which develops into the endosperm. Then, matured ovary becomes fruit while matured
ovule becomes seed. The seeds are then used as planting materials for reproduction.

Sexual Reproduction in Human and Animals
Humans (and all animals that reproduce sexually) have cells called
gametes/sex cells (sperm & egg). Sperm cells are produced by males while egg cells
are produced by females. When conditions are right, sperm and egg unite in a process
known as fertilization. The resulting fertilized egg called zygote, contains genes from
both parents.

They are unique combination
of the genes from both parents.
What’s More
Write whether the following organisms undergo asexual or sexual mode
of reproduction.
1. Katakataka =_____________ 6. Cow = ________________
2. Yeast = _________________ 7. Starfish = ______________
3. Humans = _______________ 8. Ferns = ________________
4. Cassava = _______________ 9. Gabi = _________________
5. Ube = ___________________ 10. Dog = _________________
What I Have Learned
Compare asexual from sexual reproduction in the table below. Put a check ( / )
mark on the column being described.
Description Sexual Asexual
1. Involves two different sex cells.
2. Reproduction with a single parent
3. Reproduction with two parents (male & female)
4. Offspring is different from parents
5. Offspring is identical (the same) to parents
