Homework 1
INSTRUCTIONS
There is no specific format for this homework assignment although answers should be
neatly set out and legible if handwritten. Not only the final results but also important
intermediate results should be included so that the train of thought can be followed
easily. The homework should be uploaded to Moodle using the icon Upload Homework
1. The assignment is due by midnight (11:59 pm) on the day specified in the Module
Guide i.e. on October 25th.

A mass is attached at the midspan of a fixed-pinned massless beam as shown in Figure
1. In addition the mass is connected to a spring which, in turn, is connected to a
massless cantilever. Furthermore, the mass is connected to a damper.

Considering only small vertical displacements of the mass, determine the following
properties of this SDOF system.

Plot the free vibration response of the system from 𝑡 0 to 𝑡 1 𝑠 with a time step
size of 0.001 s for the initial conditions 𝑢 𝑡 0 0.02 𝑚, 𝑢 𝑡 0 0.1 𝑚/𝑠 and
determine the maximum displacement.

Perform a harmonic analysis using a frequency increment of /100 for all plots.
Plot the amplitude of 𝑦 as a function of excitation frequency from 0 to
2 and determine the maximum value and the corresponding frequency.
Plot the phase angle of 𝑦 as a function of excitation frequency from 0 to
2 .
Plot the real part of 𝑦 as a function of excitation frequency from 0 to
2 .
Plot the imaginary part of 𝑦 as a function of excitation frequency from 0 to
2 .

Implement the piecewise-exact method and calculate the displacement response of the
SDOF system shown in Figure 3 when subjected to a sinusoidal load of amplitude F0.

The system is initially at rest i.e. 𝑦 𝑡 0 0 𝑚, 𝑦 𝑡 0 0 𝑚/𝑠. Use a time step
size of t=0.01 s and plot the response for the first 10 seconds. Determine the maximum
displacement and indicate when it occurs.

The displacement time history displayed in Figure 4 has been measured during a free
vibration test of a chimney.
