week 3
• Paper Production Process
The base ingredient of the majority of papers is wood, so the first step in paper manufacturing is
the harvesting of trees. Once the trees have been felled and shred down to their trunks, they are
transported to a paper mill. Once they arrive the trunks are fed through a bark skimming drum in
which they are forced to collide and rub together. This process removes the trunks of all their bark,
which while useful in other applications — such as being burned as boiler fuel is detrimental to
creating clean white paper.
In the next stage of the process, the de-barked logs are sent to a massive chipping unit, which
breaks them down into small pieces. The chippings of wood are then fed into large pressure boilers
called digesters. These reduce the wood chippings to a gloopy oatmeal-like pulp, which when
extracted from the digester rests at a composition of one part fiber to 200 parts waters.
The pulp is then deposited onto a high-speed, mesh screen loop, which removes most of the water
content and leaves a thin layer of raw paper. This raw paper is pressed and heated in a series of
drying cylinders where any remaining traces of moisture are removed. Finally, the paper is treated
with a starch solution that seals the surface and helps avoid excessive ink absorption during
printing.
Historically paper production has transitioned through three main phases, ranging from the manual
and bespoke creation of single small sheets from plant and rag fibers, through larger-scale, water-
powered paper mills and on to current fully automated and continuous papermaking facilities.
Today, many new hardback titles are produced from wood-free paper, which is created exclusively
from chemical pulp (a process where the lignin is totally separated from the cellulose fibers during
processing) as it is not as prone to yellowing as traditional, wood-based pulp paper.

• VARIOUS DEPT. IN TYPICAL PAPER MILL ARE AS BELOW

1: PULP MILL
2: RECOVERY
3: STOCK PREPARATION
4: PAPER MACHINE
5: FINISHING HOUSE
6: MSD (Marketing Service Dept.)

1. PULP MILL
OBJECTS:
1: RAW MATERIAL YARD
2: CHIPPING SECTION
3: DIGESTER HOUSE
4: UNBLEACHED SECTION
5: BLEACHING SECTION
6: PULP STOARAGE

12 | P a g e
"Paper Pathways: A Journey through Production and Marketing"

Operation in Pulp Mill: -

• Raw material yard: Firstly, collect the all-raw material in the yard. (Wood pulp,
bamboo, subabul etc.)
• Chipping section: It is the process of wood into smaller uniform sizes.
• Digester House: It is a complex chemical process. It is to send the plant fiber raw
material after the mechanical pretreatment into the digester with chemical cooking liquor
under high temperature and pressure for further treatment. The lignin and other impurities
will be dissolved and removed. Finally, the chemical pulp is obtained.
• Bleaching Section: Raw pulp contains an appreciable amount of lignin and other
discoloration; it must be bleached to produce light colored or white papers preferred for
many products. The fibers are further delignified by solubilizing additional lignin from
the cellulose through chlorination and oxidation. These include chlorine dioxide, chlorine
gas, sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, and oxygen.
• Pulp Storage: Pulp storage is stored in varying densities in horizontal or vertical “chest”
that are equipped with an agitor that keeps the stock in suspension. A tower is a larger
vessel that provides retention time on a down/upward flow out of pulp.

2. RECOVERY: -
• Liquor boiler: Recovery boiler is the part of kraft process of pulping where chemicals
for white liquor are recovered and reformed from black liquor, which contains lignin
from previously processed wood.
• Coal fired boiler: - A pulverized coal-fired boiler is an industrial or utility boiler that
generates thermal energy by burning pulverized coal (also known as powdered coal or
coal dust since it is as fine as face powder in cosmetic makeup) that is blown into the
firebox.
• D.M. Plant: Demineralization Water Treatment Plants, DM Water Treatment. A DM
Water System produces mineral free Water by operating on the principles of ion
exchange, Degasification, and polishing.
• Evaporator: Evaporators are used to remove water from the used pulping chemical
solution in order to concentrate it.
• Effluent treatment plant: Aerated ponds and activated sludge methods are the most
common treatment systems in pulp and paper industry. In an aerated pond, wastewater
is treated through a combination of physical, biological and chemical processes.

3. STOCK PREPARATION:
• Bleached storage chest.
• Refiners.
• Chemical additive section.
• Screening section primary, secondary, tertiary

13 | P a g e
"Paper Pathways: A Journey through Production and Marketing"

3. PAPER MACHINE
• Head-box and wire part: The function of the headbox is to distribute a continuous flow of
wet stock at constant velocities, both across the width of the machine and lengthwise of the
sheet, as stock is deposited on the screen.
• Press: The press section is the next part of the paper machine after the forming section. The
most important functions of pressing are to increase sheet solid consistency in order to
ensure adequate drying capacity, to consolidate the sheet, and enable web runnability in the
early dryer sections.
• Pre dryer section: The paper machine dryer section dries and removes the water by way of
a series of internally steam heated cylinders that evaporate the moisture from the paper web.
• Size press: In a Paper Machine, the size press is used to apply solution of starch or another
material onto the surface of the dry paper, after which the dry paper is dried
• Post dryer: At the end of the paper machine drying process, the paper has a residual
moisture of approximately 2% to 9% depending on the grade of paper.
• Calendar pope reel: A pope reel is a surface winder used on paper machines but also found
on off machine coaters and supercalender windups. The purpose of the reel is to wind paper
into large rolls called parent rolls.

4. FINISHING HOUSE
• Re-winder: paper machine rewinders are used to convert the parent reels coming from the
paper or board machine by slitting or cutting off the paper web into narrower rolls called
daughter reels.
• Duplex sheeter: - This machine is studied to have 2 different formats contemporarily. The
2 transversal cutting units can be of the same width or different width. The pallet with
different formats is auto levelling automatically with a hydraulic system.
• Simplex/syncrofly sheeter: - Machine stands are used to store standard-sized rolls of
material near the machine. These sheeter accessories are made of steel tubing and often
feature casters for portability. Extension roll stands are used to store larger rolls or multiple
rolls. They include adjustable roll bars that allow workers to move the workpiece to an
ergonomic position. Unwind attachments are portable stands that regulate unwind speeds
and serve as a tension roller for webs of materials
• Reel packing machine: Paper Reel Packing Machine is a machine specially designed for
packing paper, film, foil and similar materials manufactured in reels.
• Sorting counting and packing: First they sort the paper then they count according the
need/demand and after that send to the packaging section.

16 | P a g e
"Paper Pathways: A Journey through Production and Marketing"

• Wrapmatic bundle shrink wrap: A bundle is placed in the shrink wrapping machine, and
a loose film of polyolefin shrink wrap is wrapped around it. Then, heat is used to shrink
the film securely around the object. The end result is clear, shiny film wrapped around the
object.

5. MSD
Transportation: In order to avoid cargo damage, paper products are transported in boxes with
additional protection from mechanical impact and paper and cardboard are placed in rolls (in bales
or packs). While performing transportation of paper in rolls, a certain temperature and humidity
are maintained inside the vehicle.
