Reaction Paper Format
INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH
- Introduce the topic and briefly summarize the issues of the topic
- Why is the topic being discussed? What is important about it?
- Explain your position about the topic in 1-2 sentences.
CONTENT
a. Summary: In one paragraph, summarize the material to which you are reacting.
b. Meaning: All papers will devote several paragraph to these questions:
Choose a major theme of topic that is occurring in the topic.
How does this section complicate or add to that larger message?
How does this section contribute to the larger ideas you have been discussing in
class?
Ex. Main idea # 1- State your main idea in 1-2 clear sentence(s).
- Support this main idea with evidence and examples (be sure to use citations to the
references)
- Develop this paragraph by explaining what you think without using too many “I”
pronouns because you need to convince your teacher that what you think has been
informed by what you have read.
- Teachers like it when you can explain what you thought about the topic before,
and what you think about the topic now after you have read the material. Be sure
to explain the reasons behind why you think this way. Avoid saying that you
“feel” a certain way about the topic, because thinking involves a more active
process.
REPEAT THIS PATTERN OF ORGANIZATION WITH YOUR SECOND
AND THIRD MAIN POINTS (if you have that many) and then close with a
concluding paragraph.
c. Reaction: You may decide to do a combination or any of the following:
1) Compare the works to other related material (including but not limited to other
readings from the class)
2) You may hypothesize about ways in which the works could have been improved
3) You may think about ways to expand on the works, or extend it to cover new
domains
4) Or you may argue against the works questioning its assumptions or values
d. Conclusion and Recommendation
- Summarize what you have said in this paper.
- Remind the reader what you thought about this topic and how you have changed your
thinking.
- Give a recommendation on the issue. The recommendations should not be
prescriptive but rather mention it in a subtle/refined manner. Ex. The use of “may”
- Wrap it all up with a nice concluding sentence that leaves the reader thinking about
what you have said in this paper.
e. References
- Observe APA format
- Include all references where you got your article.
Note:
1. The paper will require you to carry-out an analytical level of analysis.
