INTRODUCTION

A social media is an online platform which

people use to build social networks or social
relations with other people who share similar
personal or career interests, activities,
backgrounds or real-life connections. The
impact of social networks on young people is
significant. It is becoming increasingly clear
that social networks have become part of
people’s lives. Many adolescent people are
using their laptops, tablet computers and smart
phones to check Tweets and status updates
from their friends and family. Due to the
advancement in technology, people are
pressured to accept different lifestyles. Social
networking sites can assist young people to
become more socially capable. Social media is
a web-based form of data communication.
Social media platforms allow users to have
conversations, share information and create
web content. Social media has different forms,
together with blogs, micro-blogs, wikis, social
networking sites, photo-sharing sites, instant
messaging, video-sharing sites, podcasts,
widgets, virtual worlds, and more. Billions of
people around the world use social media to
share information and make connections. On an
individual level, social media allow us to
communicate with our friends and relatives,
gain knowledge of new things, develop your
interests, and be entertained. On a professional
level, we can make use of social media to
expand or broaden our knowledge in a
particular field and build our professional
network by connecting with other professionals
in our industry. At the business level, social
media allows us to have a conversation with
our audience, gain customer feedback, and
elevate your brand. Social Media is an
innovative idea with a very brilliant
opportunity with additional scope for
advancements. With the advancement of social
media many organizations are making use of
this medium to better their practices. With the
use of social networking we can advertise or
communicate in a more efficient way.
Likewise, people don’t have to rely on the
media or TV to get their daily dose of news it
can all be obtained from a social networking
site. People can track or get information from
all over the world.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Social media originated as a way to interact

with friends and family but soon expanded to
serve many purposes. In 2004, Myspace was
the first network to reach one million monthly
active users. Social media participation
exploded in the years that followed with the
entry of Facebook and Twitter. Businesses
gravitated toward these platforms in order to
reach an audience instantly on the global scale.
On average, global users spent 2.24 hours each
day on social networks in 2020, the highest
across almost any media type. According to
Global Web Index, 46% of internet users
worldwide get their news through social media
platforms. That compares to 40% of users who
view news on websites. Gen Z and Millennials
were most likely to view news on social media
sites versus other generations. Social media
plays a key role in businesses' marketing
strategies given the sheer amount of time
individuals spend each day on social platforms
and apps. At the same time, social media is an
ever-changing field. New apps such as TikTok,
Signal, and Clubhouse have joined the ranks of
established social networks like Facebook,
YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. Social media
is a digital technology that facilitates the
sharing of text and multimedia through virtual
networks and communities.

LITERATURE REVIEW

As Youth and Teens are the builder of nation,

and in this era they are grown up as part of the
Net Generation. They can easily use the latest
technology in various forms, including smart
phones, mp3 players, digital cameras, video
games, iPads, electronic readers, and personal
computers. Social Media has its both positive
and negative effects. This research paper is
based on secondary data collected from the
online sources, different research papers and
from the Google search engine. We also used
some data gathering tools (On Site
Observations, Interviews, and Questionnaires)
for gathering information about the usage of
social media in general. In this paper we study
various social networking sites, various areas
(Business and Commerce, Education, Health
and medical Education etc.) in which social
media is extensively used in these days with its
positive and negatives aspects and guidelines
for handling the negative effect s of social
media on society.

DESCRIPTION OF SOCIAL MEDIA

MAIN IDEAS

• Online social media platforms enable users to

connect with others who share their interests.
Social networking is a form of social media
wherein users actively engage with peers,
followers, and the public.
• According to the Pew Research Center,
nearly three-fourths of US adults used social
media in 2020. The number of social media
users has steadily grown since the end of the
twentieth century.
• Social media serves several functions and is
often used to share articles on news, politics,
and culture; post comments, tweets, or blog
entries; upload photos and videos; and
exchange messages with other users.
• The popularity of social media has generated
debate on a range of issues, from user safety
and consumer privacy to the long-term effects
on public health and companies' actions to
keep their platforms free of disinformation.
• Most social media companies generate
revenue with advertising. Ad sales made
Facebook $27.2 billion in just one quarter in
2020. Advertisers' and other interests' access
to user data persists as a topic of contention.

POPULAR SOCIAL MEDIA SITES

Social media platforms helps us increase

brand awareness and reach, engage with our
audience, and gather valuable customer and
competitor insights.

And these days, there are tons of platforms to

choose from, which includes Twitter,
Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, We
chat, TikTok, Facebook Messenger, Douyin,
QQ, Weibo, Kuaishou, Snapchat, Qzone,
Pinterest etc.

FACEBOOK

This is the largest social media network on the

Internet, both in terms of total number of users
and name recognition. Facebook came into
existence on February 4, 2004, Facebook has
within 12 years managed to collect more than
1.59 billion monthly active users and this
automatically makes it one of the best mediums
for connecting people from all over the world
with your business.[3] It is predictable that
more than 1 million small and medium-sized
businesses use the platform to advertise their
business.
We do not assume all readers are familiar with
Facebook and the services available to its
users. Therefore, we provide a short overview
of its features. This overview is based on the
Facebook Timeline layout as it was available in
October 2012. Individuals can create an
account on the website Facebook.com. After
providing some personal information (name,
date of birth, gender, email address), the new
user chooses a password and gets account
access. Facebook opts for a highly
standardized layout of user accounts.
Regardless of whose account it is, many
features appear on the same place on the
screen, making it easy to recognize and find
the data one is searching for. There are two
important pages on this account: home and
profile. The profile page,
also often called ‘the wall’, is where users
present themselves. A small profile picture
adds to a large cover photo at the top of the
page, below which the name of the user is
presented along with some basic information
and a few buttons referring to friends,
photos, and “likes.” Below that is the area
where “status updates” appear. Users can
post anything they want in their status, and
friends can respond to this statement by text
comments or by liking it (shown directly
below the status). On the home page, also
often called “news feed,” users are informed
on the status updates and other activities
(joining groups or becoming fan of
something they like) from their friends. It
thus automatically and chronologically
reflects the highlights of what friends have
been doing in the past hours. Once a profile is
created, the new user can start looking for
friends and send friend requests. When
accepted, Facebook connects the two
individuals by allowing them to see each
other’s profile page and by adding their
activities to one another's news feed. Facebook
thus functions as an online application to see
and to be seen (Stroud, 2008) or to “presume”:
producing and consuming at the same time (Le
and Tarafdar, 2009; Ritzer and Jurgenson,
2010).

Initial motivations to join Facebook.

Sledgianowski and Kulviwat (2009) were
among the first to investigate why individuals
wanted to join Facebook. Their convenience
sample of 289 students from one American
university indicated that the perceived
playfulness and the critical mass of the site
were the main drivers of intentions to join,
besides normative pressure, trust, usefulness,
and
ease of use. Later research would confirm the
importance of pressure. Cheung and Lee
(2010), for example, studied a convenience
sample of 389 students and marked the
importance of social identity (being aware of
group membership and attaching emotional
significance to it) and subjective norms
(compliance). Kwon and Wen’s (2010)
research
on a sample of 229 Korean respondents linked
these two studies by showing a positive
correlation between perceived usefulness and
social identity. Pressure appears to remain
important also after joining the SNS, as
Skageby’s (2009) document analysis showed
that users are unhappy with pressure to accept
friend requests from coworkers and employers.

TWITTER
We might be thinking that restrictive our posts
to 140 characters is no way to advertise our
business, but we will be shocked to know that
this social media stage has more than 320
million active monthly users who can build use
of the 140 character limit to pass on
information.[3] Businesses can use Twitter to
interact with prospective clients, answer
questions, release latest news and at the same
time use the targeted ads with specific
audiences. Twitter was founded on March 21,
2006, and has its headquarters in San
Francisco, California.

Twitter disadvantages
You can’t upload videos on Twitter, you can
only add links to different sites, It is not
more effective for visual content, Twitter is
more link-based if you want to share more
photos, and videos on Twitter, So, it’s not
more effective like other photo and video
sharing sites, it is not ideal for the visual
content and it is mostly text-based.
It has a limited characters tweets, Twitter
provides only 280 charters tweets, you can’t
use characters more than 280, If you want to
tweet more than 280 characters you have to use
third-party applications, If you have some
troubles to express your thoughts in just a few
words, Twitter will be a challenge as you are
limited to 280 characters.
Twitter has a spam problem like other social
networking sites, Some Twitter users only
tweet their products, blog or website links, and
some users send spam messages or they spam
you by tweeting spam tweets, Twitter also
faces the overloading problem means due to the
large numbers of users and it gets crashed.
Twitter is addictive, The main disadvantage
of Twitter is its addiction, When you start to
use Twitter, you will get more involved
into Twitter, So, When you become Twitter
addictive, It will waste your precious time and
it will consume your most valuable time.
There are many inactive and fake Twitter
accounts, Twitter has a billion of users, Most
of them are either inactive or not used
regularly, there are many Twitter accounts that
are fake, They are made to cheat and harass
someone.
Twitter is not as effective as Facebook in
Business, If you are looking for traffic to your
product, website or service then Facebook Fan
pages can bring more traffic than Twitter
accounts. Tweets can also lose time, if
someone is following a large number of people,
the business owner may want to hire someone
to repeat the tweets for him, as they become
buried with the millions of other tweets that are
generated.

Twitter advantages
You can create an account for free, It has
massive audience potential, You can connect
with many famous people like stars and
celebrities by using Twitter, Most famous
people are now using Twitter to provide a
message to their followers and it is one of the
best ways to stay connected with the famous
people.
Twitter has a limited message
size, Tweets were restricted to 140 characters,
but the limit was doubled to 280 for non-CJK
languages in November 2017, Audio and video
tweets remain limited to 140 seconds for most
accounts., It can include a message or links on
your website as it is free and also free for
advertisements, You don’t have to face the
problem with a bunch of advertisements like
the other social networking sites do.
Twitter is fast, When you publish on it, the
people following your business will receive the
tweet immediately, the business owners can
make use of this feature to test the different
campaign angles that they are considering,
They will get an instant reaction from their
followers, So, there are many businesses that
buy Twitter followers to boost their sales.
You can use Twitter to help the followers know
about your new business, product, service,
website, blog, or eBook, So, we can hope that
other Twitter users may click on your link and
hopefully invest in a product or service you
offer. You can tweet or re-tweet, you can mark
favourite, you can send tweets by mentioning
specific people, you can send messages and
you can invest your time in its use.
Twitter is very easy to use, you can follow
people to get the news and
updates, Twitter reaches beyond Web browsers,
you can use Twitter on your smartphones,
Twitter apps exist for smartphones and tablets,
you can reach people who use Twitter on their
phones but not on their computers, or on their
tablets but not their phones.
You can use your Twitter ID to log in to many
sites or post comments, You can use Twitter in
your blog post or on your website by using the
embed tweet option, Twitter has many users,
So, You can find many people and make many
friends, It has many applications by which you
can do many interesting kinds of stuff.
Business owners can update their customers on
all the latest news about their business by
using Twitter, Business owners don’t need to
know the email addresses of people to
inform them about their business, they just
need to know their target customer base to
get their attention with the sales pitch.
GOOGLE+

Google+ is one of the popular social media

sites in these days. Its SEO value alone makes
it a must-use tool for any small business.
Google+ was propelled on December 15, 2011,
and has joined the major alliances enlisting 418
dynamic million clients as of December 2015.
Google Plus provides a lot of features, which
we can use to improve our business online.
Like other social networking sites, we can use
Google + to share information. And we can
also connect like-minded people on Google +.
But Google Plus has its own advantages and
disadvantages. This post will give you all the
advantages and disadvantages of Google Plus
in detail.

ADVANTAGES
1)Google + is free: Like other social
networking sites Google + also provides free
service to users and this is the main advantage
of Google Plus. It means you can join Google +
free of cost and it’s provided by Google so you
can use all the features of Google + freely.
2)Google + is easy to join: Joining Google + is
very easy you can join Google + within a
minute and start using Google + connections.
You can also start following people from the
starting time of joining Google+. Google + is
free from advertisement and its interface is
very handy to use. On Google +, you want only
to follow people to get updates, news,
notifications, etc.
3)Connected with Gmail: Google+ is
connected to all Google items, and Gmail is no
exemption. At the point when your business
sends messages to your rundown, the most
recent post from your Google+ page will show
up on the upper right-hand side of the
dashboard of all beneficiaries utilizing Gmail.
This incorporation is another path for your
business to goad more collaborations with your
current crowd by utilizing content effectively
shared on Google+.
4)Google + Circles: Circles are the one of best
and unique things about Google +. If you are
an old user of Google + you could be observed
that Google + circles are very useful to sort out
your connections/friends with a different type
of Google + circles. You can follow people on
Google + and add them to related Google +
circles. In short, you can make lists of the
people group as per your choice as you do your
email lists. You can add people to friends,
circles, family circles, acquaintances circles,
following circles, etc.
5) Google + Communities: It is similar
to Facebook group. Google+ communities
enable users to meet up to discuss and share
content in view of particular subjects of
interest. Just certain subjects can be discussed
in these communities since the owners can
intensely moderate them. Community owners
and moderators can be individuals, a business
page, or both. These people groups empower a
business to encourage discussions. And the
production of user-created content regarding a
matter identified with their offerings.
6) Connected to Youtube: Google + is tightly
connected to your Youtube videos. If you have
a YouTube channel then you will get an
automatic advantage of your Google +
account. In short, you can optimize your
YouTube video content by using Google + and
your videos will reach a larger audience.
7) Google+ Hangouts: At this time, Google
separated hangouts from Google +but Google
Hangout is a by-product of Google +. With
hangouts, you can do video chat with your
friends or you can do group video discussion
related to your business or any other ideas. A
Hangout can drive long-haul faithfulness with
your Google+ community on the grounds that
your business can grandstand its human side
and communicate with a group of people
individuals continuously. Many businesses
used hangouts to improve their business. Now
Google moved hangouts on a stand-alone
website, but you can use it by using your
Google + account.
6)Some other advantages of Google +:
 You can sort out your contacts in
Google + circles. You can share particular
articles with particular individuals. this
additionally includes a considerable
measure of security as you can reject your
supervisor for instance from specific
circles.
 Google + ads-free platform and not
certain if this will be always, but rather as
of now there are no ads and I don’t think
they mean to include them soon.
 You can use a hashtag to find a
particular topic or you can share your
topic with a hashtag to reach a more
specific audience.
 Google Plus to gives you to follow
and comment with no moderation and
makes your identity viral in the middle of
huge profile individuals.
 Google + provides you to connect
with your same professional and same
interested peoples and make you more
famous between those people and get
more work as well.
 You can use other Google services
with your Google + account.

Though Google + has huge advantages it

has also some disadvantages.

DISADVANTAGES
1)Inactive and fake Google
+ accounts: Though Google +has millions of
users most of them either inactive or not used
regularly. Most Google + accounts are inactive
and some users rarely visit their Google +
account once created. Some spammy people
create fake Google + accounts to
share spammy content.
2)A little bit complex to use: Once you log in
to Google Plus, you will fill the UI of Google +
is a little bit complex to use the average social
user. There are excessively numerous options
and distinctive features for somebody who is
attempting to just post up information.
3)No Promotions: Not at all like other social
networking sites, the Google+ contests and
promotions policy denies organizations from
facilitating contests or promotions on Google+
pages. This policy is clearly restricting since
one of the numerous valuable approaches to
expand engagement is by facilitating
challenges, giveaways, and advancements.
4)No synchronization with other social
media sites: Google + not provide you to
synchronize different social media services like
Twitter, Facebook etc. While you
can synchronize your Facebook and Twitter
account each other. So it is also a disadvantage
of Google + as compared to other social media
sites.
Thus, Google Plus has also disadvantages that
could be harmful to the user. So you have to
use Google + carefully to avoid these
disadvantages. Hope these advantages and
disadvantages of Google Plus will help you to
know about Google Plus.

YOUTUBE

YouTube: the biggest and most well-known

video-based online networking site — was
established on February 14, 2005, by three
previous PayPal workers. It was later
purchased by Google in November 2006 for
$1.65 billion. YouTube has more than 1 billion
site guests for every month and is the second
most well-known internet searcher behind
Google.[4]

PINTEREST
What is Pinterest?
Pinterest derived from two separate words, pin
and interest. It is a web and mobile application
company that operates a photo sharing website.
It has defined itself as “the world’s catalogue of
ideas” or a visual discovery, collection and
storage tool.
Pinterest was founded by Ben Silbermann,
together with Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp, in
March 2010 and is now a huge success, making
it one of the top social media networks. It is
considered as the darling of social media.
Nine months after the launch, Pinterest already
had 10,000 users registered. It slowly started to
get noticed by magazines and started to make
appearances in articles. In December 2011, the
site became one of the top largest social
network services.
Pinterest is commonly a beginner in the online
networking field. This stage comprises of
computerized announcement sheets where
organizations can stick their substance.
Pinterest reported September 2015 that it had
obtained 100 million clients.[3] Private
ventures whose intended interest group is for
the most part comprised of ladies should put
resources into Pinterest as the greater parts of
its guests are ladies.

Advantages of Pinterest
As a user myself of this social media site, I find
it really interesting to browse and search for
any ideas or pins that would show up on my
feed. It thrills me knowing that I will be
learning a lot on its DIY’s (Do It Yourself),
sometimes with step by step photos provided
which are very easy to understand.
Pinterest can be linked to your other social
media accounts too… like Facebook and
Twitter. Pinterest is one of the leading social
media. That means you can get a wider range
of target audience.
If you are a blogger like I am, it’s also an
excellent place for promoting your articles or
marketing your content.
There is something for everyone to enjoy on
Pinterest. You would always get results after
searching on what interests you most.
Pinterest is very beneficial for blogs and
websites. Images that are posted on Pinterest
boards and pins shared can be linked backed to
the original site: that’s huge of the advantages
of Pinterest.
Approximately 150 million users monthly
which means this is a great platform to market
your business.
Keep everything organized and share the things
you love all in one place by creating your own
board and adding pins to it. You can always go
back and view whenever you want.
There are a lot of categories to choose from
which can really catch attention, each having
vibrant and wonderful pictures attached. You
get to discover a lot of things you do not know
yet and will really keep you interested to look
for more.
Can teach you what you want to learn by just
looking at the pictures or video. Example with
girls, there is a step by step tutorial on how to
get makeup done.
You can download Pinterest application
available in smartphones. It’s a beautiful app
that offers a rich experience that is very similar
that of the full Web site. It’s great for creating
boards, pinning items, sharing items, and even
editing profile information.
You will get notifications on who pinned,
followed, and reacted to your pins and boards.
By that, you will know who your potential
customers or target audience are.
And… you can also follow boards from other
users and always get updated on their new pins.

Disadvantages of Pinterest
Along with Advantages are some
Disadvantages of Pinterest…
The main advantage of Pinterest can also be its
biggest disadvantage: it relies on images. That
means you need to be very mindful of the
images you post because it is the image that
will attract followers. Poor pictures will have
people that follow you skip past you in their
feed and not read the message in your
description.
There is no protection functionality to prevent
others from stealing your images stored in a
user account. Along those same lines, Pinterest
makes it too easy to steal other people’s work.
There is a lesser range of Men who are
Pinterest users. 81% are female which means
your business designed for men may not totally
succeed.
Instagram is only an iPhone and Android app.
If you have Windows mobile, Blackberry, or
Linux it won’t work. That means you won’t be
reaching all your target audience.
Copyright Issues where using other photos and
claiming it as yours may be subjective to
violating Pinterest’s Terms and Conditions.
The search function often turns up completely
unrelated items to what is being searched. This
may be more related to the fact of mis-tagging
the pins.
If your image does not sell, you pin will not be
clicked on. Pinterest relies entirely on looks
and not really text to sell ideas. You could have
a great product but it can be easy to
misrepresent what you offer in Pinterest.
INSTAGRAM

Instagram is a social networking application

mainly for smartphones that allows users to
share photographs and videos. It functions
similarly to Facebook or Twitter in that
everyone registering an account has a news
feed and profile. When you post something on
Instagram, it will be on your “wall.” Others
who follow your account will see your postings
in their feeds. Similarly, you’ll see posts from
other persons you select to follow. Instagram,
like Facebook, has the potential to be a good
marketing tool. An American company named
“Meta Platforms” owns the company. Filters,
video posts, Instagram stories, story highlights,
Instagram Stories videos, Instagram live, AR
filters, and IGTV are just a few of the user-
friendly features available on Instagram.
Certain well-known features demonstrate how
social media has become a daily user usage
app.
Some popular features include:
 Reels
 Stories on Instagram
 IGTV
 Utilize hashtags
 Boomerangs

Advantages of Instagram

 Low cost or mainly free: The

Instagram app is available for free
download from the Google Play store.
Anyone can sign up and make an account
without paying anything. As a result,
every smartphone user can access the
software whenever they want.
 Sharing: Every content on
Instagram, whether made directly from
the Instagram app or created by the user
and afterward published to Instagram, can
be freely shared by the user. Also, every
user can share any content file on other
social networking sites such as Facebook,
Twitter, and others.
 Instagram for Business: Market
potential has grown due to the high
number of people selling their services
and goods on Instagram profiles.
Businesses now have additional market
potential due to their capacity to promote
their products and investigate consumer
demand.
 Builds Contacts: It is a social
networking platform that you may use to
follow celebrities and stay in touch with
your friends. Anyone who misses their
friends can hunt them up on Instagram,
and business owners can create profiles
and ask for followers. In this approach,
business executives and ordinary people
can improve their interactions.
 User Interface: No matter how
many features a Social Network has, it
will never gain a large user base if it
doesn’t have eye-catching visuals and
isn’t easy to use. Instagram has the most
users of any social network due to its
incredibly engaging user interface and
clever and efficient organization.
 Online Shopping: Seeing a visual
of the product is one of the most crucial
considerations when purchasing
something online. As a result, Instagram
is an ideal marketing tool. Many
established stores and new ones use
Instagram to market their products.
Instagram enables better engagement
between buyers and merchants.

 First Choice for Travelers:

Instagram, like Bloggers, has become a
hotspot for travellers. It features a
geotagging option that works flawlessly!
You may quickly put the location of your
photo when you share it anywhere you
go. There is also a slew of additional
public accounts where people share their
trip stories and images.

Disadvantages of Instagram

 Addictive: Instagram has become

an addiction for consumers, and even
now, young people frequently use it for
entertainment. It’s an addiction to use
with caution because it can cause many
issues.
 Not compatible with all operating
systems: Insta is only available and
useable on iOS, Windows Mobile, and
Android-powered mobile devices. Other
mobile operating systems, such as
LINUX and Blackberry, are not
supported.
 False Ads: Someone occasionally
publishes inaccurate advertisements to
defraud many people. As a result of
multiple fraudulent promotions, people
no longer trust Instagram. Other
businesses must suffer as a result.
 Image Stealing: Despite
Instagram’s various security measures, it
is a digital platform, and there is always
the possibility that any professional and
quality content added to Instagram may
be “stolen” by another person without the
consent of the user who has uploaded the
content.
 Technical Issues: As I previously
stated, Instagram has significant technical
limitations. Because the platform is for
mobile/Android, the web version could be
better.
NB: You must be aware of how many well-
known Instagram users utilize this method to
share their material and produce income; it’s a
pleasant way to study and make money. If your
purpose is clear, you can use Instagram to its
maximum potential for videos and images.
Aside from its benefits, Instagram has
numerous significant downsides you should be
aware of before using it. Depending on the
intended application and your engaging talents,
you should have several problems.

Tumbi
Tumbi is a standout amongst the hardest to
utilize informal communication stages, but at
the same time it's a standout amongst the most
fascinating locales. The stage permits a few
diverse post groups, including cite posts, talk
posts, video and photograph posts and in
addition sound posts, so you are never
constrained in the kind of substance that you
can share.[4] Like Twitter, weblogging, which
is more like retweeting, is speedy and simple.
The long-range informal communication site
was established by David Karp in February
2007 and at present has more than 200 million
sites.

Let’s take a look at some of the advantages to

advertising your business via Tumblr.
 One of the advantages of using Tumblr is
that unlike many sites used for blogs,
WordPress and the like, Tumblr is also a social
networking tool. This means that as you gain
followers, other people can be exposed to your
advertisement. This means with little work on
your side you add can travel much further on
“word of mouth”.

 Another is the options Tumblr has to

integrate SEO options. This allows you to
track using Google Analytics, or other options
to see when someone clicks on your Tumblr
ads.

 Finally, a great advantage with using

Tumblr is that it is simple to use and setup.
You do not have to be a great coder to get
something fitting setup. However, if you do
know what you are doing you can customize it
even more to get a more unique page
customized to your business.

But that can also be a disadvantage.

 If you do not know extra coding you will
be stuck using the basic setup with the
templates that are available. There is nothing
wrong with these, but other businesses may
also be using them.

 Unless your entire target market is going

to be on Tumblr, you will not reach all of them.
But keep in mind that chances are that is going
to be true about any place you advertise, unless
your market is extremely niche, you will
usually not reach all of them through one
outlet.

 Lastly, the biggest disadvantage for

Tumblr is that everything is on their system, on
their server. If something causes their server to
go down, your page is going to go with it. That
said, large companies like Tumblr don't usually
have problems like that; Tumblr going down
would be as likely as Facebook or Twitter
going down.
Flickr
When Flickr was introduced, the idea caught
on like wildfire. Flickr is one of the most
popular online photo sharing programs
available. If you join Flickr, it will take you
just a few minutes to get set up and then you
can start uploading and sharing your images.

you want. After you edit pictures, you may
have problems with links and title captions.
• When you watch a specific picture, you must
have the “set/-s it” in the right-hand column.
• When watching a specific picture, you may
not be able to see the rest of the thumbnails.
• No keyboard navigation support.
• The default title for an uploaded image is its
file name.

name.
• The thumbnails on the slide show are quite
small.

just one area that Flickr is tapping into.

their family and friends about updates in their
lives and other things. With blogs you are able

digital camera can be arranged by date or
folders and can be tagged for quick retrieval. F-
spot comes with standard photo editing
procedures like red-eye reduction, color
adjustments, cropping and angle adjustments.
When a picture is opened for editing, the
original will be saved and a new version of the
picture receives the edits.
F-spot allows you directly export your photos
to Flickr, Picasa and SmugMug. F-spot stores
and looks for photos in the Photos directory. F-
spot will also look for photos you have stored
in other directories and you can import them by
clicking the import button.

Snapchat can be very addictive to young & old
people due to the filters & stories that are easy
to get hooked on, Just like other social
networks, You can spend a lot of time adding
different filters than you would on Facebook,
More people especially the young generation
are crazy about the filters, They have gone to
the extent of creating a new identity based on
these filters.

allows users to take benefits & use this
inappropriately, Some exploit by capturing
screen & taking the picture in question, The file
can be spread more & can be an issue when it
comes to privacy, Snapchat leaves you without
tracing of what you shared, unless you take a
screenshot and save it in your phone, so, you
have to share it repeatedly to be available for
others to see.
People may share what they want thinking & it
will be deleted automatically after 24 hours,
but sometimes that’s not the case, Even though
Snapchat notifies you if someone tries to
screenshot your pictures, it doesn’t prevent
them from doing, so, It is not easy to know if
your target audience watched your Snapchat
video and Ads or they just skipped it unless
they send a direct message to you.
Snapchat is only an iPhone & Android app, If
you have Windows mobile, Blackberry, or
Linux, it won’t work, so, you won’t be
reaching all your target audience, All videos
are 10 seconds long, If your content is long,
you have to post several videos and this may
become annoying if they’re too many, Snapchat
stories & videos are automatically deleted after
24 hours, You need to manually save the
content in your device for later use and update
content daily.
Snapchat doesn’t allow you to share content
like on Facebook & Twitter, You can only take
a screenshot of the published content & share it
with other platforms, Snapchat can’t let you
comment or like photos or videos unlike other
social media like Facebook and Instagram,
there is no like or share feature in Snapchat,
The only way to interact with followers is
through the views & direct messaging,
Snapchat only targets users between 12 to 34
years, unlike Facebook which has 62% of
adults.
It is expensive to advertise through Snapchat
compared to Facebook & Twitter, When you
decide to advertise through Snapchat, you will
need to have enough advertising budget, You’ll
need a reasonable budget to be effective with
your Snapchat paid advertising, The cost of
Snap Ads varies by campaign and start at
$10,000/month, Snapchat is too costly for
small & medium-size businesses, so, there is a
huge market that Snapchat can’t touch which is
available to Facebook& Twitter.

WHATSAPP
WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform
instant messaging client for smartphones, PCs
and tablets. This application needs Internet
connection to send images, texts, documents,
audio and video messages to other users that
have the app installed on their devices.[5]
Launched in January 2010, WhatsApp Inc. was
purchased by Facebook on February 19, 2004,
for about $19.3 billion. Today, more than 1
billion persons make use of the administration
to speak with their companions, friends and
family and even clients.

ADVANTAGE
1 Acts as an Information Sharing Platform
WhatsApp is the most efficient platform for
communicating with individuals and groups.
You can share files, images, documents, and
other resources with a single click. WhatsApp
has proven to be the primary information-
sharing medium in various institutions like
universities and schools. During the pandemic,
when everything shut down, WhatsApp was a
bridge between office work and school work.

#2 Provide Safety and Security

Personal data and information are securely
stored with the end-to-end encryption feature
of WhatsApp, and users can report and block
unknown users. Moreover, to protect data,
WhatsApp enables you to take end-to-end
encrypted backups. These features of
WhatsApp restrict the exploitation of personal
information, giving users a friendly and safe
experience.

#3 Provide a Global Connection

WhatsApp enables friends and family to
communicate even if they live on different
continents and countries. Even if you live far
from each other, you can celebrate festivals by
making video calls, sending photos, and
watching videos. Today, WhatsApp has become
the new vogue.

#4 Effective Live-Location Sharing

WhatsApp allows easy live location sharing,
which is uncommon among apps. This tool is a
necessity for travelers or students living away
from home. Thanks to live location sharing,
your loved ones will constantly be aware of
where you are.
#5 No Ads and Cost-free
WhatsApp has always been free since its
release. With the help of an internet connection,
you can send messages to anyone, anywhere.
Additionally, WhatsApp does not feature
advertisements like other social media sites do.
WhatsApp also has a policy against
advertising. This ensures a hassle-free
experience for users.

#6 User Friendly
WhatsApp’s user-friendliness is another
fantastic feature, which accounts for its
popularity among youngsters and senior
citizens. The app does not require any technical
knowledge. Hence, WhatsApp is the only
program where you can locate several family
groups; thus, it has increased global
connectivity.

DISADVANTAGES
1 A Platform for Spreading False
Information
WhatsApp has become a platform for
spreading misleading content. Some people use
the application to advance their political
viewpoints, and WhatsApp is also used to
promote hate speech against specific people
and organizations. During the Covid-19
outbreak, people received several false medical
recommendations on WhatsApp.

#2 Affects Mental Health

Youngsters remain isolated from their physical
environment and get lost in virtual reality due
to the excessive use of WhatsApp. They prefer
to be on their phones instead of interacting with
people in person. It severely affects their
mental health as they compete in a self-created
world. It lowers their self-worth and creates
self-doubt.

#3 Usage of Storage
The Images, videos, and audio you receive or
forward to people can be deleted, but backups
of them are kept saved in the media folder of
WhatsApp. As a result, the space to store
WhatsApp on your phone keeps rising.
Moreover, it is tough to free space even after
deleting the images and videos.

#4 Unnecessary Interruptions
Nobody can indeed overlook WhatsApp text
notifications. From checking one message to
viewing people’s statuses, you’ll also start
looking through the profile pictures of your
contacts. After doing that, you frequently open
your connections’ contact information and
review it. Therefore, it can conclude that
WhatsApp is a persistent cause of disturbances
in our day-to-day life.

#5 No Content Censorship
WhatsApp does not censor the types of content
an individual share. Hence, a lot of
inappropriate information and content is
distributed through this platform. This led to
harassment. Thus, it is in the hands of the
platform users to pause such content.

6 Requirement of Smartphone and Internet

WhatsApp is only available to individuals with
smartphones and internet access because it is
only accessible on a smartphone and requires
an internet connection to function. As a result,
it is only beneficial for those with smartphones
and internet access.

TELEGRAM

Telegram Messenger is a globally accessible

freemium, encrypted, cloud-based and
centralized instant messaging (IM) service. The
application also provides optional end-to-end
encrypted chats (popularly known as "secret
chats") and video calling, VoIP, file sharing
and several other features.

Telegram was launched in 2013 by the

brothers Nikolaiand Pavel Durov. Previously,
the pair founded the Russian social
network VK, which they left in 2014, saying it
had been taken over by the government.Pavel
Durov sold his remaining stake in VK and left
Russia after resisting government pressure.
Nikolai Durov created the MTProto protocol
that is the basis for the messenger, while Pavel
Durov provided financial support and
infrastructure through his Digital Fortress fund.
Telegram Messenger states that its end goal is
not to bring profit, but it is not structured as a
non-profit organization.
Telegram is registered as a company in
the British Virgin Islands and as an LLC in
Dubai. It does not disclose where it rents
offices or which legal entities it uses to rent
them, citing the need to "shelter the team from
unnecessary influence" and protect users from
governmental data requests. After Pavel Durov
left Russia in 2014, he was said to be moving
from country to country with a small group of
computer programmers consisting of 15 core
members. While a former employee of VK
claimed that Telegram had employees in Saint
Petersburg, Pavel Durov said that the Telegram
team made Berlin, Germany, its headquarters in
2014, but failed to obtain German residence
permits for everyone on the team and moved to
other jurisdictions in early 2015. Since 2017,
the company has been based in Dubai. It has a
complex corporate structure of shell
companies to delay complying with
government subpoenas.
IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON
MEDICAL AND HEALTH

Social media provide Health Care Professionals

with tools to share information and to promote
health behaviours, to engage with the public,
and to educate and interact with patients,
students, and colleagues HCPs can use social
media to potentially improve health outcomes,
develop a professional network, increase
personal awareness of news and discoveries,
motivate patients, and provide health
information to the community.
Physicians most frequently join online websites
where they can read news articles, listen to
experts, research medical advancements,
discuss with colleagues concerning patient
issues, and network. They can explore and
share ideas, discuss practice management
challenges, make referrals, disseminate their
research, market their practices, or engage in
health advocacy.A large number of physicians
also use social media to converse directly with
patients to enhance clinical care. It is clear that
social media is having a distinct consequence
on healthcare systems, and that its impact is
relevant both in the developed and developing
worlds. Healthcare consultants provide
improved healthcare to a larger number of
citizens, while clients are able to use it to
empower themselves, their families and their
communities.

POSITIVE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA

ON HEALTH

The use of social media significantly impacts

mental health. It can enhance connection,
increase self-esteem, and improve a sense of
belonging. Some of the positive impacts
includes:

• Sharing of Doctors prescriptions to friends,

relatives and colleagues.
• Consulting Doctors online anywhere and
anytime.
• Sharing Suggestions among friends, relatives
and
colleagues about various diseases and its
symptoms.
• Access to information in developing regions.
• Support and mutual accountability on online
health
forums.
• Support for health-related causes.
• Helping health services to prioritize critical
cases.
• Increased accountability to consumers.
• More data available to health researchers.

NEGATIVE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA

ON HEALTH

Since it’s a relatively new technology, there’s

little research to establish the long-term
consequences, good or bad, of social media
use. However, multiple studies have found a
strong link between heavy social media and an
increased risk for depression, anxiety,
loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal
thoughts.
Social media may promote negative
experiences such as:

• Inadequacy about your life or appearance;

Even if you know that images, you’re
viewing on social media are manipulated,
they can still make you feel insecure about
how you look or what’s going on in your own
life. Similarly, we’re all aware that other
people tend to share just the highlights of
their lives, rarely the low points that everyone
experiences. But that doesn’t lessen those
feelings of envy and dissatisfaction when
you’re scrolling through a friend’s airbrushed
photos of their tropical beach holiday or
reading about their exciting new promotion at
work.

• Fear of missing out (FOMO) and social

media addiction; While FOMO has been
around far longer than social media, sites
such as Facebook and Instagram seem to
exacerbate feelings that others are having
more fun or living better lives than you are.
The idea that you’re missing out on certain
things can impact your self-esteem, trigger
anxiety, and fuel even greater social media
use, much like an addiction. FOMO can
compel you to pick up your phone every few
minutes to check for updates, or
compulsively respond to each and every alert
—even if that means taking risks while
you’re driving, missing out on sleep at night,
or prioritizing social media interaction over
real world relationships.
• Isolation; A study at the University of
Pennsylvania found that high usage of
Facebook, Snapchat, and
Instagram increases rather decreases feelings
of loneliness. Conversely, the study found
that reducing social media usage can actually
make you feel less lonely and isolated and
improve your overall well-being.
• Depression and anxiety; Human beings
need face-to-face contact to be mentally
healthy. Nothing reduces stress and boosts
your mood faster or more effectively than
eye-to-eye contact with someone who cares
about you. The more you prioritize social
media interaction over in-person
relationships, the more you’re at risk for
developing or exacerbating mood disorders
such as anxiety and depression.
• Cyberbullying; About 10 percent of teens
report being bullied on social media and
many other users are subjected to offensive
comments. Social media platforms such as
Twitter can be hotspots for spreading hurtful
rumours, lies, and abuse that can leave lasting
emotional scars.
• Self-absorption; Sharing endless selfies and
all your innermost thoughts on social media
can create an unhealthy self-centredness and
distance you from real-life connections.

IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON

BUSINESS
POSITIVE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA
ON BUSINESS

It’s free

Sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are

a free marketing tool. You can pay a bit extra to
increase you audience, but it’s possible to
nurture a huge organic reach for free if you use
social media platforms effectively. That means
more money to spend on other types of
advertising, and its great news for smaller
businesses who don’t have a huge marketing
budget.

Inbound traffic

Social media marketing allows you to reach

further than your usual, loyal customers. It’s a
gateway to your website, allowing people with
different behaviours and demographics to find
your business. “For instance, perhaps someone
in an older demographic of consumers will
search for your website using a particular
keyword on Facebook, but a millennial could
begin their search by using a different social
media platform entirely, because they search
for products totally differently,” say Blue
Fountain Media. You will, however, need an
effective strategy to do this, so look out for
future articles in this series.

It can be used for much more than marketing

Your social media channels can be used for

customer service, business intelligence, market
research, getting customer reviews and
recommendations, and in general, building a
much closer connection with your clients.
Many big brands allow customers to contact
them directly via their social media channels,
which can be both a benefit, and a hindrance,
as negative customer comments have
been known to go viral if handled badly.

Collecting customer data

Social media channels allow you to collect lots

of useful data via their analytics applications.
You can see instantly what your target audience
respond to best, and at what times they are
most active. This allows you to adjust your
content accordingly. It can also help you to
track conversions, benchmark against your
competitors and identify influencers(people
that share your content with their audiences).

Customer loyalty

Social media allows businesses to look human

and establish trust and loyalty amongst their
followers. “When consumers see your
company posting on social media, especially
replying to customers and posting original
content, it makes you appear more credible.”
Blue Fountain Media explain. By nature, social
media generates interactions and relationships,
which can have a positive impact on your
brand loyalty.

Brand equity

“When consumers make purchasing decisions

among different options, they are more likely
to select a product that they are familiar
with,” say Lyfemarketing.com. The more
followers and brand awareness you can foster,
the more sales you are likely to make –
Inc.com found that there is a
positive link between social media following
and how much a business is worth in a study of
14,000 business owners.

NEGATIVE IMPACT OS SOCIAL MEDIA

ON BUSINESS

Time consuming

In order to utilise the full advantages of social

media marketing – customer service, posting
lots of content and responding to analytics, etc
– you’ve got to make a long-term commitment
and put in a lot of hours. A study by the Social
Media Examiner found that marketers spent
anything from 1 to 40 hours per week on social
media marketing. Another study found that
almost half of small businesses spend around 6
hours a week on social media. The internet is a
busy place and “it’s making it harder for
companies to reach to the segmented audience
with valid and informative messages [that]
resonate.” You need to plan and implement a
social media marketing strategy to avoid
getting lost in the crowd. It depends on the
business, but smaller teams need to consider
whether they have the resources, and which
areas to prioritise.

Risk of miscommunication or negative

feedback

Unhappy customers can be quick to post their

feedback on your public social channels. When
managed effectively, the damage can be
minimalised – the general advice is that you
should always respond, do it swiftly, take
ownership of your mistakes and then try and
take the conversation offline. This can take a
lot of time and effort and there is still the risk
of it going wrong or internet trolls who just
won’t quit. Equally, having a large amount of
complaints on your channels can make your
brand suffer. You need to decide if you want
potentially inaccurate or unfair negative
feedback aired on such a public forum.

Doesn’t work for every business

Big Mouth Marketing argues that social media

doesn’t work for some small business at all. If
you’re a roofing company, for example, few
people are likely to follow you on social media
due to the nature of your business. There’s little
gain in you spending time and money creating
compelling, shareable content and building a
following.

However, you could consider using Facebook

to deal with customer queries. Target
Marketing Mag suggests that you need to
decide which, if any, social media channels are
relevant to your business and target audience
before you start posting away.

IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON KID
AND TEENS

Media today has a huge influence on

teenagers. Be it television, computers, video
games, social networking sites – it hugely
impacts all aspects of a teen’s life. Everything
is not bad with the media. If used in right way,
media can transform lives of the youth from
good to better. This post highlights both
positive and negative media influence on teens.

A. Positive Effect of Social Media on Kid and

Teens Help Develop Awareness:
Most teens live a sheltered life. But with
exposure to various media outlets, they can
develop awareness about society and the world.
With news channels, magazines, social
networking sites blaring about world
happenings, youth can understand that there is
more to the world than just what is happening
in the ‘hood.

Help Develop Social Skills:

Many teens are socially awkward. Social
Media also gives them the probability to
develop their social circle and develop new
friendships. Other benefits include social
confidence, heightened literacy in the media,
and more social support. Social media
diversifies teen’s social skills, which in turn
helps them navigate successfully through
modern society.
Inspire Them:
When our teen watches an action flick, don’t
just despair about the violence. With a minute
control on teens, they can use the movie as
encouragement, motivation and inspiration!
Maybe our teen will decide to take up martial
arts training, all thanks to a Bruce Lee movie!
Mostly youngsters give the impression of being
celebrities, and when a celebrity tells them to
stay off drugs, they just might listen.
Help Develop Reading And Writing Skills:
When a celebrity talks of her favourite book, a
teenager might be tempted to grab a book too.

B. Positive Effect of Social Media on Kid and

Teens
Distorted Body Image:
The world is full of perfect people today. With
the use of Photoshop the images are
everywhere and lead to distorted body image
among a number of teenagers. Anorexia and
bulimia are a fall out of this body image crisis.
Risky Sexual Behaviour:
Young people are simply finding their
sexuality. It is exceptionally typical for them to
be occupied with everything sexual. However,
the measure of sex in media today can make an
adolescent befuddled. Sex without duty – that
is by all accounts the message being radiated at
adolescents. This can prompt untrustworthy
sexual conduct and undesirable pregnancies.
Score Low In School:
Teens who watch too much television have
lower scores in exams. During a study it is
mentioned that persons with high degree scores
watch less television in their childhood and
teenage. Another study reveals that different
media affects school work differently. The
media today is powerful and omnipresent. You
just can’t escape its tentacles. And you don’t
need to! Retain this information in mind, media
is presently a tool and like any other tool, how
you use it depends on you.
HANDLING INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL
MEDIA ON YOUTH AND TEENS:
Here are some ways to handle the influence of
social media on teenagers:
• Check out the music, movies, TV shows,
games and celebrities your child likes. Once
we know what is interesting to them, we can
spot the pictures and messages that are
influencing them.
• It is quite easy for our teens to watch
YouTube videos on mobiles so that we may
not know what he is watching. Parents must
try monitoring the teenager on what he is
watching on TV or the internet and try to
discuss some limits and rules.
• One of the best ways to help the teens
navigate the influences on media is to talk
about messages. For instance, if the teen love
girls, we can talk to them about female
friendships, life choices, self-esteem and
sexuality.
• Monitoring teen’s choices does not mean we
ban them from watching media. It is just
making them aware of the negative
influences.
• We should also choose to ban some apps,
shows and games. Explain why we are doing
so.
• We can also encourage our teen to interpret
media by putting forward some questions
they can ask. Pick out a TV ad or a magazine
and ask the teen: who’s behind it, what is
their motivation, how does it make them feel,
what they needs from it, and so on.
• We can do the same with our teen’s role
model. Encourage our teen to ask him like
why does they like that celebrity, does they
follow him in real life, what values of the
celebrity interest our teens and so on.
