Tutorial - 2
1. Check whether the following groups are isomorphic or not ?
(a) R and C
(b) R∗ and C∗
(c) S3 × Z4 and S4 .
(d) Z2 × Z2 and Z4 .
2. (a) If a group G is isomorphic to H, prove that Aut(G) is isomorphic to Aut(H).
(b) Find two groups G and H such that G is not isomorphic to H but Aut(G) is
isomorphic to Aut(H).
3. (a) Show that a permutation with odd order must be an even permutation.
(b) Suppose that H is a subgroup of Sn of odd order. Prove that H is a subgroup
of An .
4. Let p be a prime. If a group has more than p-1 elements of order p, why can’t the
group be cyclic ?
5. Prove that an infinite group must have an infinite number of subgroups.
6. Find an example of a noncyclic group (finite and infinite), all of whose proper sub-
groups are cyclic.
7. Suppose that G is an abelian group of order 35 and every element of G satisfies the
equation x35 = e. prove that G is cyclic. Does your argument work if 35 is replaced
with 33 ?
8. Prove or disprove that there are n homomorphisms from the group Z/nZ to the
additive group of rationals Q.
9. Prove or disprove that there is non-trivial group homomorphisms from S3 to Z/3Z.
10. Prove or disprove that any automorphisms of the group Q under addition is of the
form x 7→ qx for some q ∈ Q.
11. Let A4 denote the group of even permutations of {1, 2, 3, 4}. Consider the following
statements:
(a) There exists a surjective group homomorphisms A4 −→ Z/4Z.
(b) There exists a surjective group homomorphisms A4 −→ Z/3Z.
Check the truthness of the above statements.
12. Let f : (Q, +) −→ (Q, +) be a non-zero homomorphism. Pick out the true state-
ments:
(a) f is always one-one.
(b) f is always onto.
(c) f is always a bijection.
(d) f need be neither one-one nor onto.
13. Let GL(n, R) denote the group of all invertible n × n matrices with real entries,
under matrix multiplication, and let SL(n, R) denote the subgroup of such matrices
whose determinant is equal to unity.
Prove that the quotient group GL(n, R)/(SL(n, R) is isomorphic to R∗ .
14. Let C∗ denote the multiplicative group of non-zero complex numbers and let P
denote the subgroup of positive real numbers.
Prove that the quotient group C∗ /P is isomorphic to the multiplicative group of
comlex numbers with modulus one.
15. Let n ∈ N, n ≥ 2. WOTF statements are true ?
(a) Any finite group G of order n is isomorphic to a subgroup of GLn (R).
(b) The group Zn is isomorphic to a subgroup of GL2 (R).
(c) The group Z12 is isomorphic to a subgroup of S7 .
