Relief Valve (Torque Converter Outlet) Pressure - Test and Adjust
SMCS - 3133-036; 3182-036
Hot hydraulic oil under high pressure can remain in the components of
the hydraulic system or the power train system after the engine has been
stopped. The uncontrolled release of the hydraulic oil can cause sudden
machine movement and can also result in the following conditions:
• Burns
• The penetration of body tissue
• Other personal injury
• Death
If hydraulic oil penetrates body tissue, the injury must be treated
immediately by a doctor who is familiar with this type of injury. Use a
board or a piece of cardboard to check for a hydraulic oil leak. Make
sure that all of the attachments have been lowered to the ground and
that all trapped pressure has been released from the hydraulic system
and the power train system. Also, make sure that the hydraulic oil is
cool before the removal of any components or lines. Remove the
hydraulic oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap
is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Personal injury or death can result from not engaging the parking
brake.
Transmission engagement alone will not prevent machine from rolling
when the engine is stopped.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Introduction
The torque converter outlet relief valve maintains a minimum pressure in the torque converter.
The following test procedure will verify whether the pressure setting is within the specified limit. The pressure setting
may be adjusted by adding or removing spacers.

Test Procedure
1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location.
2. Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel away from the machine or in the operator's
sight.
3. Place the steering control lever in the NEUTRAL position.
4. Engage the parking brake.
5. Lower the attachments to the ground.
6. Stop the engine.
7. Turn the key to the ON position, but do not start the engine.
8. Verify that the implement shutoff control is in the Unlocked position .
9. Move the control levers through the full range of travel several times. This should relieve any pressure that may
be present in the implement hydraulic system.
10. Loosen the filler cap on the hydraulic tank so that the pressure in the tank is released. The machine may be
equipped with a breaker valve. The breaker valve will be located on top of the tank. To release the pressure of
the tank, press the button on top of the breaker valve (if equipped).
11. Tighten the filler cap on the hydraulic tank.
12. Make sure that the pressure in the entire hydraulic system has been released.
13. Turn the key to the OFF position.
Reference: Refer to Troubleshooting for additional guidance for preparing the machine for testing.
Note: The monitoring system (if equipped) for your machine accesses many values that are useful in
troubleshooting the power train system. When the situation is appropriate, use the monitoring system in order
to find a pressure or determine a system problem.

14. Attach Tooling (A) or (B) to pressure tap (R2).
15. Warm the transmission oil to operating temperature.
16. Run the engine at HIGH IDLE. Fully depress the brake pedal. Disengage the parking brake. Put the torque
converter in a stalled condition with the transmission in third speed forward. Note the pressure on the gauge.
The pressure should be 410 ± 50 kPa (60 ± 7.5 psi).
Note: This pressure pertains to a test that is done on the machine. The 410 ± 50 kPa (60 ± 7.5 psi) is not a
bench test specification.
17. If the pressure that is observed is not 410 ± 50 kPa (60 ± 7.5 psi), perform the steps in "Adjustment Procedure".
Adjustment Procedure
1. Shut off the engine.
2. Remove the torque converter outlet relief valve. The torque converter outlet relief valve is located at the back
of the torque converter housing. Refer to Power Train Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Converter Outlet
Relief Valve - Remove" for your machine.

3. Add spacers (1) or remove spacers (1), as needed. Refer to Power Train Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque
Converter Outlet Relief Valve - Disassemble" for your machine. Refer to Table 2 for the specifications for the
spacers.
4. Assemble the torque converter relief valve. Refer to Power Train Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque
Converter Outlet Relief Valve - Assemble" for your machine.
5. Install the torque converter relief valve. Refer to Power Train Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Converter
Outlet Relief Valve - Install" for your machine.
6. Perform Step 16 and Step 17 in "Test Procedure" in order to check the pressure at gauge (A).
7. If the pressure is at the specified limit, the test is complete.
