RATIONALE
One of the major components of computer based information systems is computer
networks. Through computer networks we can share hardware, Software, Processing,
Data and Applications besides getting global connectivity for intemet based
communication and services. For diploma students it is important to understand the
function of computer networks and obtain requisite knowledge about hardware and
software requirements of networks and acquire skills to establish a network using
necessary hardware & software tools and configure various services over it, The
objectives of this course are to make students lear the technology of designing,
building and maintaining computer networks.
COMPETENCY
The aim of this course is to help the students to attain the following competency
through various teaching learning experiences.
‘* Use Software and hardware technology to design, establish and
maintain computer networks.
COURSE OUTCOMES (COs)
The theory, practical experiences and relevant soft skills associated with this course
are to be taught and implemented, so that the student demonstrates the following
industry-oriented COs associated with the above-mentioned competency’

9. SUGGESTED STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Other than the classroom and laboratory learning, following are the suggested student
related co-curricular activities which can be undertaken to accelerate the attainment of
the various outcomes in this course: Students should conduct following activities in
group and prepare reports of about 5 pages for each activity, also collect/record physical
evidences for their (student's) portfolio which will be useful for their placement
interviews:
a. Identify type of Network in your Department.
b. Design a Network for your Institute.
©. Visit server room and various places where Racks and servers are installed, identify
various Network components; collect information about of necessary hardware and
software.
4. Prepare Charts of Network Topologies.
10. | SUGGESTED SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES (if any)
These are sample strategies, which the teacher can use to accelerate the attainment of the
various outcomes in this course:
a, Demonstration of local area network installation in the institute and its technolog
Give an environment to establish, configure and troubleshoot a small network by
giving hands on practice.
b. Massive open online courses (MOOCS) can be used to teach various topics.
11, SUGGESTED MICRO-PROJECTS
Only one micro-project is plamed to be undertaken by a student that needs to be assigned
to him/her. In special situations where groups have to be formed for micro-projects, the
number of students in the group should not exceed three.
The micro-project could be industry application based, intemet-based, workshop-based,
laboratory-based or field-based, Each micro-project should encompass two or more COs
which are in fact, an integration of PrOs, UOs and ADOs.(Affective Domain Outcomes)
Each student will have to maintain activity chart consisting of individual contribution in
the project work and give a seminar presentation of it before submission.. The student
ought to submit micro-project by the end of the semester to develop the industry oriented
Cos.
A suggestive list of micro-projects is given here. Similar micro-projects could be
added by the concerned faculty:
a. Create a network using wired and wireless media. Configure network with suitable
subnet. Test the network using various troubleshooting commands. Install wireshark
software and configure it as a packet sniffer on created network,
b. Create a network using star topology and configure network as peer to peer
architecture
