Topic 8 – Load Lines

1. Define the following: (11pts)


a) Loadline
* It is the marking that indicates to which the weight of a load may safely
submerged in a ship, it is also called as Plimsoll Mark. Its primary purpose is to
ensure that ship has sufficient freeboard.
b) Deck line
* It is a horizontal line that measures about 300mm by 25 mm, and also it
passes through the upper surface of the freeboard
c) Deck line
* It is a horizontal line that measures about 300mm by 25 mm, and also it
passes through the upper surface of the freeboard
d) Freeboard
* It is the distance from the waterline to the upper deck level, measured at
the lowest point of sheer where water can enter the ship.
e) Load Line disc
* It is a round shape disc , that has a 300mm in diameter and 25mm in
thickness and intersected by a horizontal line
f) Summer load line (S)
* It is located at the same level as the Plimsoll Line, and it is a basic
freeboard line. Other load lines is also based from the Summer Freeboard load
line.
g) Tropical Load line (T)
* It is a 1 is to 48th of summer draft marked above the Summer Load Line.
h) Winter Load line (W)
* It is a 1 is to 48th of summer draft marked below the Summer Load Line.
i) Winter North Atlantic (WNA)
* It is marked 50mm below the Winter Load line, It is a load line markings
that can be applied to North Atlantic which has 36 degrees of latitude.
j) Fresh Water (F)
* It is the summer fresh water load line , The distance between Summer
and Fresh water load line is called as the fresh water allowance
k) Tropical Fresh Water (TF)
*It is a marking that is located above the Tropical Load line at an amount
of the Fresh Water Allowance, and it is the fresh water load line in Tropical.
2. What is the purpose of Load line. (1pt)
 The primary purpose of a load line is to ensure that a vessel has sufficient freeboard
and buoyancy, to avoid having stress on a ship and also it ensure the stability of the
loads.
3. Explain the types of Load line. (2pts)
 There are two types of load lines, and these are Standard and Timber Load Line
Markings. The first type of the load line is the Standard which is applicable to all
kinds/types of vessels, While the Timber Load line can only be applicable on the
vessel or ship carrying timber cargoes.
