Luke Chapter 1
Luke chapter 1 tells us about the birth of Jesus Christ as well
as the Birth of John the Baptist. In Luke 1:5-25 tells us that Zechariah is
serving God in the Temple in Jerusalem when an angel appears to him.
The angel tells him he and his wife will have a son who will be a prophet
of God. Not just any prophet, he will be the prophet who prepares the
way for the Messiah. This was big news because Elizabeth had been
barren and she was getting old. Zechariah isn’t confident about the
angel’s promise and expresses doubts. The angel isn’t pleased, and
makes Zechariah mute until his words become reality. From Luke 1:26-
38, Luke is telling us that Gabriel makes another appearance, this time
to a girl from Nazareth named Mary. Mary is a virgin but Gabriel tells her
she is going to have a son. The Spirit of God would come upon her and
a child would be created in her womb. He would be called the “Son of
the Most High”. And from Luke 1:39-56 tells us about Mary visiting
Elizabeth they have been blessed by the Holy Spirit. They’ve been
planning and talking about the future of their children. How they will
become when they grow. And lastly Luke 1:57-80 tells us the birth of
giving birth of Elizabeth to her son, and they named it John. And the birth
of God’s only begotten son through Mary and named him Jesus Christ. A
wonderful chapter which tells us how Great God is and what he have
made done for the people to be saved through giving us His only son
and lived here in the world with us to teach us what truly God wants us
to know and wants us to do as his people.
We learn from these verses that the character of a really great
and successful minister of God. The picture is set before us in a striking
manner, by the angel's description of John the Baptist. He is one who
will "turn hearts", that turns them from ignorance, to knowledge; from
carelessness, to thoughtfulness; from sin, to God. He is one who will "go
before the Lord" and he will delight in nothing so much as being the
messenger and herald of Jesus Christ. He is one who "will make ready a
people for the Lord." He will strive to gather out of the world, a company
of believers who will be ready to meet the Lord in the day of His
appearing.
