Cpar Characteristics and Functions Week 3

Modern and contemporary art periods are distinct, with modern art occurring after post-impressionism up until around 1980, and contemporary art referring to art created since 1980. Modern art rejected traditional styles and values and was characterized by the artist's unique perspective, while contemporary art is collaborative, interactive, mirrors contemporary culture and society, and challenges traditional boundaries through new materials and methods. Contemporary art also incorporates appropriation, where pre-existing images are combined with new elements.

Arts have been

part of our lives

since early
years of history
not just a subject
that has to be
learned
VIEWED,
to be UNDERSTOOD and to
be APPRECIATED in the
context as they were
created
From then to contemporary
times, the development of
art has continuously grown
and encompasses so many
aspects of our lives
More importantly, to make these
encounters with arts meaningful, they
need to know and to understand it.

Having knowledge and understanding

of art is essential as it can help to know
and to understand oneself.
But there were also
countless revivals of old
styles being done. This
started a new direction
for the arts thus, setting
the name, momentarily,
to the Philippine
Contemporary Period.
The Philippine
Contemporary Art, from
1980s to present, was on
the onset of the sudden
rise of personal computers
and new technology,
which created a new art
medium for the arts and
human expression.
Characterized by
the artist’s intent
to portray a
subject as it
exists in the
world, the
Modern Art
Aesthetics
During this period
were according to
the artist’s unique
perspective and
are typified by a
rejection of
accepted or
traditional styles
and values.
Changes in education,
culture and the arts
brought to change when
Americans arrived in the
archipelago.
Filipinos were formally
educated. Those who
were sent to study
abroad went back
carrying the idea of
contemporary art.
Technological
innovations
transcended the
traditional way of
creating art.
Art forms expanded
letting artists
experiment with
various materials and
methodologies.
Hence, artists created non-
conventional creations with
wide range of themes.
Contemporary Filipino
architecture focused on urban
planning, economic zone, and
regionalism.
Characteristics of
Contemporary Art
Contemporary art is the
work of artists who are
living in the 21st century
Contemporary art is
collaborative and
interactive

APPROPRIATION is an
example of
Contemporary Art
where the process of
creating art involves
the use of a pre-
existing image or
something that is from
another context, and
then combining it with
new ones.
The work of
contemporary artists is a
dynamic combination of
materials, methods,
concepts, and subjects
that challenges traditional
boundaries and defies
easy definition.
In fact, contemporary
art can be seen as
something that breaks
the norms and rules as
the works of art are
“radical” and
“interdisciplinary”.
Interdisciplinary
–combination of
arts that use an
interdisciplinary
approach
involving more
than one artistic
discipline.
Diverse and
eclectic,
contemporary art
is distinguished by
the very lack of a
uniform organizing
principle, ideology,
or - ism.
In a globally influenced,
culturally diverse, and
technologically advancing
world,
contemporary artists give
voice to the varied and
changing cultural
landscape of identity,
values, and beliefs.
It even professes an
awareness of local
heritage that can be
passed on from one
generation to the
next.
Marcos then built the New
Society or Bagong Lipunan
as a rebirth to the lost
civilization through
modernization.
This was aimed to combine
different art forms such as
architecture, engineering, fine arts,
health, interior design, tourism,
and urban planning, among others,
through an art and culture
program.

Modern to Contemporary Art

Post-impressionism

In everyday language, the terms “modern”
and “contemporary” are often used
interchangeably. In the context of art,
however, they designate two distinct
moments in art history. There are specific
definitions for both terms, and these
definitions will help us to establish an
understanding of the images and themes
that emerge in both styles of art.
Mode RN ART
➢ Modern art is a term that signifies the
philosophy and style of the artworks
produced during the 1860-1970 era.
➢ This art broke with convention, dealt with
new subject matter, focused on conceptual
concerns, and changed the position of the
artist within society.
➢ They emphasized on the subjective
representation of subjects rather than
focusing on realism that was prevalent
before the 1880s.
HOW MODERN ART USHERED A NEW
ERA IN THE WORLD OF ART?

The Modernism movement introduced many

fresh concepts in the world of art. All of a
sudden many artists started exploring dreams,
symbolism, and personal iconography as their
signature. Modern artists also experimented
with the expressive use of color, non-
traditional materials and mediums.
Mode RN ART
➢ The main objective of Modern art was to
set aside the traditions of the past and put
more emphasis on experimentation with a
new perspective of seeing the world.
➢ Many styles of art developed during the
modern period:
➢ impressionism, art nouveau, fauvism,
cubism, futurism
➢ surrealism, expressionism, abstract
expressionism, optical art, kinetic art, post-
modernism arts (pop art, minimalism)

POST MODERNISM ARTS

the move to contemporary arts

America.

CONTemPORARY ART
➢ The term “contemporary art” is generally
regarded as referring to work made between
1970 and the present.
➢ It also implies art that is made by living
artists, but essentially contemporary art is
seen as something that has never been done
before.
CONTemPORARY ART
➢ The Contemporary Art era is known to
produce more experimental works and
tackles a wider variety of social,
economic and political issues. It made
art as a whole to reflect the current
issues that hound our world today, such
as racism, globalization, third-world
country oppression, feminism among
many others.

art and pop culture imagery. But remember
not to overload your slides with content.
NEO-POP ART
⬗ Neo-Pop Art is more of a repetition.

2. PHOTOREALISM

microscopic exactness.
PHOTOREALISM
➢ Most photorealist painters work
directly from photographs or
digital computer images -
either by using traditional grid
techniques, or by projecting
colour slide imagery onto the
canvas.
➢ The aim is to recreate the
same sharpness of detail
throughout the painting.
3. CONCEPTUALISM
⬗ gives priority to an idea
presented by visual means that
are themselves secondary to
the idea.
⬗ can deliver a powerful
message, and thus has served as
a vehicle for socio-political
comment, as well as a broad
challenge to the tradition of a
'work of art' being a crafted
unique object.
CONCEPTUALISM
⬗ Conceptual Art is all about "ideas
and meanings" rather than
"works of art" (paintings,
sculptures, other precious
objects).
