General Chemistry Syllabus

This document outlines the syllabus for the CHEM107 General Chemistry course offered in the fall 2023 semester. The course objectives are to provide a concise but thorough introduction to the structure of matter and its interactions. The tentative course schedule covers topics like thermochemistry, electronic structure, periodic properties, chemical bonding, intermolecular forces, kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics across 15 weekly class hours. Students will also complete a 10-week laboratory to fulfill the course requirements. Evaluation will be based on midterm exams, a final exam, and the laboratory work, and students must attend at least 70% of classes and are responsible for any material covered therein.

Chapters 1 to 4 is considered to be covered in high school and will not be discussed in the class.
Make sure to go through the chapters in details and discuss with your instructor if you do not know or have
difficulty in any of the topics within these chapters.
Course Materials:
Required: Chemistry: The Central Science, 14/E, Brown, LeMay, Bursten, Murphy, Woodward, Stoltzfus, Pearson.
Suggested: Chemistry for Engineering Students, 2nd edition, Lawrence Brown and Thomas Holme, Brooks/Cole,
Chemistry, The Central Science, Brown, Lemay, Bursten, Murphy, 13th Ed., Pearson., Principles of Modern
Chemistry, Oxtoby, Gillis, Campion, 7th Ed. Brooks/Cole.

Grading Policy:
Evaluation Weight (%) Exam Date Exam Time
Midterm 1 25 November 11th, 2023 TBA(to be announced)
Midterm 2 25 December 16th, 2023 TBA
Final 40 TBA TBA
Laboratory 10 sections&program TBA TBA
Make-Up (after final exam) TBA

All sections will take the common exams. Most of the exams will be over the material that is covered since the last
exam. However, the course builds on the material that has been delivered earlier. So, the concepts; calculations
and techniques from earlier exams may be required.
The Final Exam will cover the work of the entire semester.
NA Grading: If you do not satisfy the following conditions, you will get NA grade:
1. The midterms and final exam is required for every student who wants to receive credit for this course.
Students, who still have missing exam after make up exams, will get NA grade.
2. Students who missed two or more laboratories will fail and have NA grade.

Laboratory:
Laboratory experiments will be performed face to face in general chemistry laboratories of Chemistry Department.
• All students should also take the laboratory of the CHEM107 course
• If you have passing grade from previous years, you do NOT have to take laboratory again.
• Students who missed two laboratories will fail course and have NA grade.

Your laboratory sections, experiment dates, laboratory instructions (how to reach manual etc) for the experiments
will be shared via odtuclass by the lab coordinator.
Please contact the lab Coordinator Akif Şafaklı to verify your previous grade and for your questions about the lab.
([email protected]).
Cheating: In the case of cheating, you will be graded NA and disciplinary action will be pursued.

Attendance Policies: 70% attendance is mandatory. The best place for learning is the classes. Past experience has
shown that the students who attend the classes get higher grades. Moreover, we may cover additional material in
the class that is not covered in the textbook. Therefore, we, as the instructors of CHEM 107 strongly recommend you
to attend the classes.

Make-up Policies: No excuse except medical report approved from Medical Center of METU will be accepted. The
student must deliver the report to the instructor within 5 days after the missed exam. There is going to be only ONE
make up exam at the end of the term and it will be held after the final exam.
