QUARTER 1 | ACTIVITY 1 IN SCIENCE
Components of Scientific Investigation
Learning Task 1. Fill in the blanks with appropriate term/s. Use the words provided below.
Dependent Observation Scientific Method Experimentation
Independent Conclusion Problem Control group
__________________________ 1. A manipulated factor in the experiment that is intentionally varied by the
experimenter (on X-axis)
__________________________ 2. A responding factor that may change as a result of changes made in the
independent variable (on Y-axis)
__________________________ 3. Serves as the standard comparison, no treatment is applied
__________________________ 4. This is the stage where the hypothesis is tested
__________________________ 5. This includes a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis
__________________________ 6. researchers make use of this process to identify the specific problem
they want to study
__________________________ 7. this can be answerable by what, when, where how and why
__________________________ 8. a general pattern for science investigation
Learning Task 2. Arrange the correct pattern of the scientific method by putting a number in a box on top of
each word.
Learning Task 3. Read the following examples and then decide if the example is referring to qualitative
observation (Q1), or quantitative observation (Q2). Write before each number QI or Q2.
_____ 1. It is light green in color
_____ 2. Unripe mango tastes sour
_____ 3. One leaf is 7 cm long.
_____ 4. A balloon makes a loud pop sound if pricked.
_____ 5. The temperature of the room increases by 10 degrees Celsius.
_____ 6. The flower clusters in 3 blooms.
_____ 7. The leaf veins are 3 mm wide.
_____ 8. Feels very rough.
_____ 9. Ripe mangoes smell sweet.
_____ 10. The mass of the desktop computer is 2 ½ kg.

Learning Task 4. Read and understand the situation below and decide whether the question being asked is
either TRUE or FALSE. Write your answer opposite the picture.
Many of the food industry in Pasig City like agriculture, manufacturing, food processing, marketing,
wholesale and food distribution, food service such as catering, groceries and public markets were
challenged by the pandemic. In order for the Pasiguenos to buy food products in the Pasig City Mega
market, they need to walk long distances and it took hours to reach their destinations. Most households
rely on food deliveries so to avoid being infected by the disease. This experienced served as an eye opener
to many of us about the necessity of basic need -FOOD. Many of us realized how to appreciate whatever
kind of food is set on our dinner plate, simple, cheap, and yet enough to be shared by each member of our
family. Kindly read and understand the five questions for True or False for you to understand better the
relevance of Mr. Santos study on mango seeds in relation to insufficient supply of food during this time of
pandemic.
_______________ 1. During this time of pandemic, there were scarcity of food supply and other necessity
products like alcohol, sanitizers and face mask. Scarcity means insufficient in supplies of these products.
_________________ 2. The Pasig City government created a “mobile market” in response to help minimize
the hardship of commuting being experienced by the people of Pasig City in going to a market place because
of the enhanced community quarantine or ECQ.
_________________ 3. As an individual living in an urban area like Pasig City, planting of fruit bearing trees
such as mango tree is NOT advisable and impossible to happen due to many areas that are populated and
also due to lack of area for planting.
_________________ 4. A farmer like Mr. Santos contributes a lot in the mango farm industry as well as in
helping market vendors to gain profit from selling a good variety of mango fruits.
_________________ 5. A person who wanted to invest in a mango farming agriculture DO NOT need to
plan, organize and creatively think of choosing the best variety seed of fruit bearing mango tree.
Learning Task 5. Variables Practice. Identify the variables in each observation
OBSERVATION 1: One time Mr. Alvarez went to the grocery store and he bought all the types of
microwave popcorn that the store had. With these types of popcorn, he conducted an experiment.
PROBLEM: Does the amount of butter in a popcorn kernels affect the amount of popcorns that pop?
HYPOTHESIS: If Mr. Alvarez put 1 tablespoon of butter, 2 tablespoon butter, and 3 tablespoon of butter
in each 20 grams popcorn kernel, then all the popcorn kernels will pop in each sample.
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE: ____________________________________________
DEPENDENT VARIABLE: _______________________________________________
CONTROL VARIABLE: __________________________________________________
OBSERVATION 2: Aljune and Toby proposes the idea that the marble would travel at a faster pace if it is
rolled down the longer slide.
PROBLEM: What happens to the speed of a marble travels when the height of a ramp is changed?
HYPOTHESIS: If the height of a ramp is doubled, then the marble will reach the same speed even if the
inclined is increased.
