BACC 1101/ 1201: FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING I/ PRINCIPLES OF ACCOUNTING

(45 LECTURE HOURS)

Prerequisite: None
Course Purpose
To introduce students to financial accounting for processing and communicating of financial
information to support economic decision making. This particularly focuses on procedures of
book keeping and preparation of the financial statements for a simple business.

Expected Learning Outcomes


By the end of this course the student should be able to:
1. Identify the users of accounting information;
2. Extract ledger accounts;
3. Prepare a trial balance;
4. Describe the accounting cycle;
5. Reconcile cash book and bank statement; and
6. Prepare final accounts of a sole proprietor.

Course Content
Nature, Purpose and Scope of Accounting: Accounting concepts. Source documents. Books of
original entry. The ledger and the Trial balance. Accounting Cycle, Data Collection,
Journalizing, Ledger accounts, Trial balance, adjusting entries, financial statements, closing
entries, post-closing Trial balance: Cashbook and bank reconciliation; accounting for
merchandising operations. Accounting for service operations. Correction of errors. Control
accounts. Final accounts of a sole proprietor.

Teaching Methodology: Lecture methods, case studies, discussions, demonstrations.

Instructional Materials - These will include Tables Smart boards LCD Projectors and
computers, Flipcharts and Videos
