Education

Childhood Education)
MW 8:30-10:00AM
Prof. Adelyn A. Sialana-Nalla, MAEd
Learning Outcomes
After the lesson, you will be able to:
1. Define and synthesize the meaning of early childhood education;
2. Explain ECE based on NAEYC’s position statement; and,
3. Distinguish factors to consider in early childhood education.
Warm Up
Before embarking into the first lesson of this course,
you will do this activity first. Read the passage and
brainstorm on the journal questions by writing your
answer on the sheet of paper provided for you.
Victoria walks to the classroom with a large box. The box is heavy;
she has trouble carrying it to the door. As she slowly reaches the door, she
drops the box at the doorway and runs into the classroom with
outstretched arms. On passing through the doorway, everything in the box
is forgotten.
Gabrielle walks to the classroom with a large box. The box is heavy; she
has trouble carrying it to the door. As she reaches the door, her teacher helps
her to carry the box inside. Gabrielle is instructed to keep the box with her. She
does not share everything that is in the box, nor does she keep the box
completely closed. The box is never ignored. She accesses the contents of the
box and adds to the box as needed throughout her time spent in the classroom.
What do you think is in the box?
a. The Pupil’s Box
b. The Early Childhood Teacher’s box
Now, think about the box you bring
today here in the classroom. Take a
moment to write down the contents of
your box on another sheet of paper.
What beliefs do you hold
regarding early childhood
education?
What does it mean to be a
teacher in early childhood
education?
What is school like for young
children?
DEFINING EARLY CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION
What is early childhood education?
- Early childhood, defined as the period from birth to eight years old, is a
time of remarkable growth with brain development at its peak. During this
stage, children are highly influenced by the environment and the people
that surround them.(https://en.unesco.org/themes/early-childhood-care-and-education)
DEFINING EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
✓ Basically, early childhood education encompasses all forms of education,
both formal and informal, government funded or privately run school
system and focuses on the cognitive and learning skill, motor and socio-
emotional growth.
✓ This education is fundamental to the development of a child and can
significantly shape the later years of an individual’s life.
DEFINING EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
This comprises the following:
Infant/Baby 0-1 years old
Toddler 1-2 years old
Pre-school 3-4 years old
Kindergarten 5-6 years old
Middle School 7-8 years old
DIFFERENT FACETS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO
CHILD’S EDUCATION
• In terms of informal education, the primary
source of input when it comes to a child’s
development is, of course, its relationship with its
parents or primary caregivers.
• In essence, parents can be considered to be a
child’s first teacher.
D IFFERENT FA C ETS T H AT C O NTRIBUTE T O
C HILD’S ED UCATION
• This relationship is especially critical between 0-2
years of age as the child begins to develop its sense
of self and establishes an attachment with its
parents.
• The quality of the attachment formed at this stage of
life can have a significant impact on a child’s future
education.

A SSIGNMENT
• In a 1-paragraph composing of 5-10 sentences,
define early childhood education (include your
beliefs about the child, the teacher, and the
curriculum). Synthesize your definition by
incorporating NAEYC’s core values in ECE, ECCD
and UNESCOs. (50pts.)
