CHAPTER FOUR Siap Sidang

The document describes a study that analyzed data from a quasi-experimental research with two groups of 7th grade students. The experimental group used a question and answer method for teaching speaking, while the control group used a conventional method. Both groups took a pre-test and post-test. The data showed the average pre-test scores and variances were similar between the two groups, indicating homogeneity. After the different teaching methods were applied, the post-test scores increased more for the experimental group than the control group. Statistical t-tests were used to analyze whether the question and answer method was more effective.

CHAPTHER IV

DATA ANALYSIS AND RESEARCH RESULT

4.1 Data Analysis

In this section, the researcher explained the frequencies, percentages,

mean and etc. of the test, based on the result of the test before and after giving the

treatment in both experimental and control group. This research was to prove the

previous hypotheses which had been formulated, it was to find out whether

using question and answer method in teaching speaking was more effective rather

using conventional method or not.

There were two classes of the seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 9

Lhokseumawe was taken as the sample of this research. Experimental group

consisted 20 students and control group consisted 20 students. The teaching was

held in four meetings. Those were for teaching speaking. In experimental group

the researcher applied question and answer method in teaching speaking, while

for control group , the researcher explained about speaking by using

conventional method. As mentioned before, the design of this research was quasi-

experimental research by using quantitative data approach. Talking about

quantitative, it related to number. So, to analyze the data which were collected

from the tests, the researcher used the statistical formula t-test to examine the

hypothesis.

Before teaching the sample in both the two classes, experimental group

and control group, the researcher gave them pre-test in multiples choose form.

35
36

After giving them pre-test, the researcher applied question and answer method to

the experimental group in teaching speaking, especially in describing people, and

applied conventional method to the control group. After applying the method in

experimental group and the conventional method in control group, the researcher

ordered those students to do post-test.

The data that the researcher collected in this thesis were about the result

of students test in pre-test and post-test. Then the result of pre-test and post test of

experimental group and control group can be seen as follows :

in experimental class was 70 and the highest score was 90. In addition, for the

lowest score in control class was 55 and the highest score was 80.

4. 2. Research Result

4.2.1. Homogeneity Test

The examine the homogeneity between experimental group and

control group. The researcher needed to find out the average score and variance

from pre-test result for both groups.

N Mean Deviation Variance
Experimental Group 20 36,2 6,67 44,56
Control Group 20 35,4 6,39 40,88

To determine the homogeneity of data, the researcher need to find each

standard deviation for both groups: experimental group and control groups. Then,

it was compared with the critical value which was used at the level of significant

5% (α = 0,05) for educational level. If obtained f-test was lower than critical value

of table, it means that data was not homogenous.

To find the homogeneity of data, it was analyzed by using the formula below:

highest Variance
F 0=
lowest Variance

44 ,58
40 , 88

F¿ 1 , 09

In significant level α = 0,05 ,it was showed that F table (20 , 20)=4 ,35

because 𝐹0<𝐹𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 that is 1,04 < 4,35 so from the result of the research, it was

proved that both of data was homogenous

2. Normality Test

Normality test was applied in order to find out whether the data found was

normal or not, it was needed to analyze post test result for both classes by finding

the average of post test result for both groups and standard deviation from

experimental and control groups.

Based on the table above L0= 0,2227 with n =20 and in significant level α =

0,05 from Lilliefors table, the researcher got Ltable = 0,173.Because L0<L, 0,2227<

3. T-test

From the previous calculation, it had been an average value of the

experimental group. (𝑥𝑖) = 69, variance (S12)= 18,31 while the average value for

the control group ( x 2¿ ¿ = 65,6 Variance (S22) = 19,2. Based on these data, then

the researcher did the examination toward the truth hypothesis. Hypothesis testing

was using t-test with the formula:

x 1−x 2
t score =

From the data that the researcher found above:

n1= 20 n2 =20
48

x1 =69 x2 = 65,6

S12 = 4,27 S22 = 4,38

The combination of standard deviation for both of classes are

4.2 Hypothesis Authentication

49

In this section, the researcher would like to explain the research result after

collecting data and analyzing it by using statistical formula as mentioned in

previous chapter. The purpose of this research is to know significant differences

in achievement between the students who are taught speaking by using question

and answer method from those who are taught speaking by using lecture method.

There were two hypotheses in this research, the hypothesis that will tested

in this research are as follows:

Ha : µ1 > µ2 : There is significant differences in achievement between the

students who are taught speaking by using question and answer method

from those who are taught speaking by using lecture method.

H0 : µ1 ≤ µ2 : There is not significant differences in achievement

between the students who are taught speaking by using question and

answer method from those who are taught speaking by using lecture

method.

To comparing t test and t , it is necessary to calculate the degree of

table

freedom (df) based on significant standard 5% (α = 0,05).

The statistical determine degree of freedom (df) formula is:

(n1+ n2- 2)

Where:

df : degree of freedoms

n1 : the subject of the sample in control group

n2 : the subject of the sample in control class

So, degree of freedom that used in this research was:

50

df =(n1+ n2- 2) = 20+20 -2 =38

From distribution table t obtained t 1−α = t 1−0 ,05=0 , 95. because df =

38, is not in the table, the researcher interpolation approach and t (0 , 95)(38) = 1,66.

Based on the quantification result, the mean score of post test both experimental

and control class were different. The mean score of experimental class is 69, and

the mean score of control class is 65,6. Beside, the obtained t-test score 16,42 was

higher than the critical value 1,66 for degree of freedom 38 sample both class was

40. Based on the calculation above that t test >t table =16,42> 1,66. It means that the

alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, while null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected.

The research indicated that the experimental class achievement was better than

control class. They got improvement in teaching speaking. Therefore, the

researcher concluded that the use of question and answer method in teaching

speaking was effective.
