Lesson 1: INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS

Objectives: In this Module, challenge yourself to attain the following learning outcome:

1. construct mathematics lesson plans which are student centered, are grounded in a
solid understanding of the featured mathematical content, and meet the needs of
diverse learner.

INTRODUCTION

A lesson plan is a teacher’s daily guide for what students need to learn, how it will be
taught, and how learning will be measured.
Lesson plans help teachers be more effective in the classroom by providing a detailed
outline to follow each class period.
This ensures every bit of class time is spent teaching new concepts and having
meaningful discussions — not figuring it out on the fly!

PRINCIPLES OF WRITING THE PARTS OF THE LEARNING PLAN AND ITS GUIDELINES

I. Objectives
1. Should be focused and connected on the topic.
2. Should be composed with one behavioural term in each domain.
3. Follow the sequence of each domain.

c. Affective

4. Use appropriate behavioural term in each domain (Refer to your hand-outs on the
Bloom’s Taxonomy)
5. Preferably objectives have introductory phrase. Do not forget the proper place of
the comma in the introductory phrase. After to: use small letter in each domain to emphasize
that it is a continuation. At the end of each domain, use proper punctuation mark.
Example:
i) At the end of the lesson/topic/session/discussion, the pupils/students
are expected to:

6. Objectives should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Result-
Oriented Relevant, Time-bound and

1. Do not put period at the end of the topic.
2. Use capital letter in every first letter of the important words on the topic title
except of, the, at, etc
3. BE CAREFUL! This is the basis in the formulation of objectives, what to include
in the content and the presentation of the content.
B. Reference/s
1. Give at least three references.
2. Follow the correct format on how to write references.
C. Materials
1. Be sure to include all the materials to be used during the demonstration teaching.
2. Capitalize the first letter in every word if proper noun and small letter for common
noun.
D. Values Integraton/Values Infusion
1. It should be within the topic. It deals with the application or importance of the
topic to the real life.
2. This should be found in your affective domain of the objectives in part 1.
3. Can be inserted or done anywhere in the lesson.

on what the teacher preferred.
4. Do not say this “Submit your
assignment without making any noise.”
Instead “Submit your assignment
without talking and standing.”
5. Require the pupils to write corrected by
and their name on the paper they
check.
6. Call each name of your pupil when
he/she wants to answer on the board.
7. If in case you made encoded
assignment, create visual aid to save
time in writing it on the board.

order for the parents to follow up the

2. Drill
Guidelines:
1. Must be connected in your previous lesson.
2. This can be in a form of activity, board work,
matching activity, etc. The purpose of this is to
assess the understanding of your pupils in the
previous discussion.
3. Through giving this, you remind the pupils
about the previous lesson.
4. This would be done quick and snappy.

3. Review
Guidelines:
1. What was our lesson last meeting? Let
the pupil respond with, Our lesson last
meeting was about ____________. If
the pupil answer this, Our lesson last
meeting is about ___________. After
the pupil gave his/her answer,
automatically check the grammar and
let her repeat the answer.
2. If there is visual aid posted on the
board, you remove it immediately so
that pupils understanding and memory
about the previous lesson.
3. You give one question about the
previous lesson.

4. Motivation
Guidelines:
1. Open your topic through this, so
choose carefully an interesting and
mind-stimulating motivation.
2. Be sure that the activity given relates to
your new topic.
3. Use real objects, model, mock up, and
realia. If nothing can be found, use
pictures.
4. Do not use words that need to be
unlocked since the most preferred
sequence: motivation comes before
unlocking of difficulties.
5. Giving short activity can be used in

motivating the pupils.
6. After emphasizing anything in your
motivation, ask them questions. As
expected they cannot answer so this is
the time to connect or present your
topic.

NOTE: Preliminary activities should be done


quickly, it should not be given with more
emphasis. This is good for only 10 minutes.

B. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES
1. Presentation of the Topic
Guidelines:
1. Open your visual aid posted on the
board.
2. You can relate the unanswered
questions in your motivation by stating
like this: “Since you do not know my
questions earlier that will be our topic
this morning. Do you want to know the
answers? So listen attentively in our
discussion and participate in the class.
Do you agree with it? But before we
discuss, let us unlock or define first
those difficult words you will encounter
as we go along our discussion.
2. Unlocking of Difficulties
Guidelines:
1. All difficult words found in your
discussion and even in the reading
selection will be included here.
2. Do not copy any definition from the
dictionary or internet since it’s very
difficult to understand. Instead, make
simple and clear definition which can
be easily understood and appropriate
to the level of your pupils. BE
CAREFUL! Make sure the definition
you made is based on the context
within the lesson and has similar
thought from the dictionary. In other
words, you give the connotation of the
words you define.
3. Limit your words to be included here.
Remember unlock the most difficult

words.
4. DO NOT provide the definition of each
word and just let your pupils read it.
Instead, show pictures of each term.
Then, based on the pictures require
them to give their understanding or
definition of the given word. Your pupils
have plenty of ideas and you need to
unify their ideas. Add what is lacking
and clarify something so open your
definition of that certain word.
5. FOR ENGLISH AND FILIPINO
SUBJECTS, it is better you show
pictures at the same time used the
certain word in a sentence.
6. Post the picture(s) beside the word
already defined so they can remember
it while having your discussion later.
7. Be creative in defining the terms, there
are many strategies that could be used
in defining the terms.

3. Discussion Proper
Guidelines:
1. Always consider the needs and the
abilities of your pupil. Method to be
used in discussing the lesson always
considered the nature of the topic, and
the learners.
2. Let your pupils define the term(s)
through giving examples with picture.
In each example emphasize word(s) or
phrase (s) through underlining it which
serve as clue.
3. The words being defined here are
words included in your topic. For
example, if your topic: Food Chain and
Food Web, so, define the Food web
and food chain based on the given
examples with pictures.
4. Make sure that the information in the
content of your discussion is true and
correct. Your deep and clear
understanding of the topic is very
important here. This is the main focus
in your lesson. Always

remember :MULTIPLE MISTAKES
COMMITTED BY A TEACHER IS
ALREADY A CRIME.
5. Do not rely on your own understanding
you rely at least 5 resources in latest
edition about the content on the lesson.
6. Give very informative, true facts and
interesting discussion.
7. If in case you give wrong information in
the content and not well presented, you
will be recommended to have re-
demonstration.

4. Generalization
Guidelines:
1. Ask maximum of 2 questions. Why and
how questions are highly encouraged.
These questions will collect plenty of
ideas from the pupils.
2. Give quick activity to evaluate.
3. Insert values integration (but this could
be inserted in any part of the lesson).

5. Application
Guidelines:
1. Choose appropriate activity for your
topic.
2. Divide the pupils which consumes less
time. Do not use counting among
pupils by themselves since this
strategy is time-consuming.
3. Provide clear instruction or direction
before you let your pupils proceed to
their respective groups.
4. Give rules:
a. Cooperate with your groups.
b. Monitor the pupils while
working. (You can still add
more)
5. Monitor the pupils while working.
6. Let the pupils report their work.
7. Check the works of the pupils
systematically that consume less time.
8. Varied activities in each group will be
provided which in line with

differentiated instruction.
9. Allocate time in doing the activity.

IV. EVALUATION
Guidelines:
1. Based your quiz on the objectives particularly cognitive and psychomotor domains.
2. Use multiple-choice test since this is considered as standard test. Follow the guidelines in
formulating it.
3. Allocate time in accomplishing the quiz as well as in checking it.
4. Give clear instruction or direction including the size of the paper.
5. Make instructional materials posted on the board even though you provide encoded quiz.
6. Let the pupils answer and check their paper immediately since their scores are basis which
the assignment they are going to answer.

V. ASSIGNMENT
Guidelines:
1. Follow the way DepEd give assignment. The basis of giving is the score of the pupils in
their quiz.
Example:
0-3--- assignment should similar to the quiz
4-5-- assignment

A. Finalizing the Learning Plan
1. Check the subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, proper punctuation and proper
usage of small and capital letters, as well as the spelling. Include also the correct
structure of wh-questions (information question) and yes-no questions.
2. Make sure that the learning plan is free from encoding errors.
3. Make sure you indicate the title “A Detailed Learning Plan in
_______________________.
4. Use appropriate and understandable words.
5. Follow the correct format and sequence of the learning plan.
6. Please do not forget the heading of the learning plan.

B. Instructional Materials
1. Choose and combine the colors very well. The more colourful the Im’s, the more it catches
the attention of the pupils.
2. The font size of the title is bigger than the rest of the text.
3. Make the title covered and open it during the presentation of the topic.
4. Place the title at preferably at the center since it is the umbrella of everything.
5. Be sure that the font size of the texts are visible and readable from the last persons sitting
at the back.
6. Use cursive font style in the appropriate and required grade level.
7. Use black felt it pen in writing the texts and use other colors in underlining or encircling the
important ideas presented in the text.
8. Arrange and organize your instructional materials especially if you have plenty it. You can
use chart with stand, activity board, etc.
9. If you and your pupils have something to write on the board, then allocate space for it.
10. Be sure that the instructional materials are at the eye level of the pupils.
11. Preferably, use real objects, models, realia, mock ups, etc. If nothing found, then you
have no choice use pictures.
12. You are encouraged to integrate multi-media presentation during teaching.

ACTIVITY: Construct your own learning plan in Mathematics and that will be used for
your demonstration.
