Decision Making

This document summarizes a case study about a student named Fred who has to decide whether to go to his friend John's birthday party or study for an English exam. It outlines the five steps of decision making: 1) Identify the problem 2) Consider alternatives 3) Review consequences of each alternative 4) Choose the best alternative 5) Evaluate the decision. For Fred's problem, the best decision is to politely decline the party in order to prioritize studying. The document then has the student apply the same process to their own problem of adjusting to online classes by prioritizing study over other activities like watching movies.

Case # 1: John invited Fred for a few drinks on a Wednesday evening. It is John’s birthday and he
wants to celebrate it with his closest friends, including Fred. Now, Fred has an English long quiz
tomorrow. Fred thinks English is not as difficult as the other subjects, like Math or Science, but he has
been having difficulty adjusting to college English lately.

1. State clearly what the problem is

- The problem is that John invited Fred for a few drinks on a Wednesday evening because it
is John’s birthday that day but unfortunately, Fred has an exam the day after Johns
Birthday celebration.

3. Review each way/alternative to solve the problem and list all the things that could possibly
happen.
- If he will go to John’s birthday celebration, we will not be able to have the time to study
and review his lessons. However, if he decides not to, he will have plenty of time to study
more and gain high scores.

4. Decide on the alternative that seems best and write it out.

- The best alternative is he should just politely decline John’s invitation because he has to
review for his quiz which should be prioritize first.

5. Evaluate the decision. Use the final decision for making a plan for carrying out the decision;
use the plan to set goals.
- The best option is for him to gently refuse John's offer since he has to review for his quiz,
which should come first. If John is a true friend, he will understand.
Now, it is time to reflect and apply this to yourself!
