Fraternity: Brotherhood
Argument 1: Fraternity present a Philanthropic opportunity to its members and not to promote
violence. Even several country leaders is a former members of fraternity.
Argument 2: Several laws are established since then, that controls the number of death due to
unregistered fraternity activities. Statistics shows that 58 hazing victims since 1954 included the
following:
- 21 from private schools and institutions
- 19 from public learning institutions (state universities/colleges and high schools)
- 15 from military or maritime training institutions
- 1 from the DepEd’s Alternative Learning System
- 2 with no available data
First death due to fraternity is recorded in 1954 (Gonzalo Albert). At least 58 people have died allegedly
due to hazing or initiation rites of fraternities and training institutions since 1954, the year when the first
hazing victim was reported. And at least 46 alleged deaths due to hazing were reported after the
Republic Act 8049 or the "Anti-Hazing Law" was passed in 1995.
Argument 3: Fraternity produce a promising member that will make a future for the country and is
already making a fortune. Fraternity is not evil, just because someone died as a member of fraternity
means that they died because of fraternity. Fraternity have their own rules for its members to follow.
Therefore, before joining a fraternity one person should have a clear and whole understanding in the
rules.
Argument 4: Fraternity vs. fraternity. Fraternity members fought to themselves due to psychological
behavior. There may be same belief, but it is known that different kind of people is in there with
different psychological behavior and fraternity leaders and members can’t control that thing as it is part
of their right as a citizen. Therefor, government made a law to develop a fear and not to promote
violence against one another since violence in fraternities made a big controversy.
1939 is the first fraternity established that is named Alpha Phil beta, it was establish under UP College
of law and requires a 1.75 GWA to join the fraternity. During that time, “fraternities did not kill their
neophytes and indoctrinated, brainwashed them, put values, character and proper attitudes into their
beings” according to Atty. Jimenez who is a former fraternity member.
Then martial law in 1972 is ordered by Pres. Marcos a former president of the Philippines due to
terrorism and the fraternities became the target of military due to suspicions. Also, that time many
members of the fraternity fought for the cause of democracy.
