Packaging Task
Year 9 Food Studies
Investigate
1. View the video: Food for Thought Packaging. Here is the link: https://clickv.ie/w/f3lw
2. Write a paragraph about the different types of packaging used for food including the type of
food contained, the material used and whether it is recyclable.
Food packaging comes in many forms, each designed to suit specific types of food and their
preservation requirements, while also taking into consideration environmental impact. Plastic
packaging, although widely used due to its flexibility and durability, is often criticized for its
environmental footprint — it's commonly used for a variety of foods, from fresh produce to snack
foods, but it's not always recyclable. Glass, a recyclable and reusable material, is traditionally used
for packaging products like jams, sauces, and pickles due to its non-reactive nature and ability to
preserve flavor. Metal cans, also recyclable, are used for long-term storage of foods like beans,
vegetables, and soups. Lastly, paper and cardboard packaging are becoming increasingly popular for
dry foods like cereal or pasta, due to their recyclability and lower environmental impact compared to
plastic.
3. Look up Coles online/Woolworths online and investigate if different brands use different
packaging for similar goods (i.e. Do some fruit juice companies sell their juice in glass and
others in a tetra pack and others in cans). Give one example for each type of packaging, if
you can, find one food company that does all three for a great comparison.
You can either write your response or cut and paste pictures of the food packages here!

Design
You have been hired by a company called Foodie to design the packaging for one of their two new
products. The products are home-made Monte Carlo biscuits or home-made Sausage rolls. You have
been asked to design packaging that displays their product to its best advantage. The packaging
should keep the product fresh while it is on the shelves in the shop. The packaging should be
environmentally friendly and convenient for the user.
You need to consider the following issues when you design your packaging:
How easy it will be to transport the product?
Will the packaging protect the product during transport?
Is the packaging heavy or bulky, or compact and light?
Is the product stackable?
What materials will you use?
Are the materials used environmentally friendly?
If there are strong conventions in that category of product which influence how companies
package or identify that product, will you follow those conventions or design something very
different?
How can you capture the consumer’s attention?
What wastage will occur?
Will the packaging be cheap or expensive to produce?
8. List your materials for your packaging design.
9. Sketch your design. Make sure that you label appropriately.
