Online Lesson

This document outlines a lesson plan where 9th grade algebra students create tutorial videos explaining how to solve linear inequalities and publish them online. Students will learn to use the SchoolTube website to publish their videos. By creating the videos, students must demonstrate understanding of the topic as they will have to explain their reasoning. Their videos will then be viewed by other algebra students, allowing collaboration and feedback. The teacher will introduce the project using their own example video and provide guidance on the technology. Students will work independently and in groups to storyboard, film, and edit their tutorial videos.

Lesson Title How can we solve Linear Inequalities?

Content Area 9th Grade Algebra

Content Standards A.PAR.4.1 - Create and solve linear inequalities in two variables to represent
relationships between quantities including mathematically applicable
situations; graph inequalities on coordinate axes with labels and scales.
Technology Standards 1.6.c Models and Visualizations- Students communicate complex
ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital
objects such as visualizations, models or simulations.
1.6.d Customize the Message- Students publish or present content that
customizes the message and medium for their intended audiences.

Integrated Technology https://www.schooltube.com/

Reference or https://www.schooltube.com/terms/faqs
Supporting Resources I read the FAQ’s to get a better idea of how the website works.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Remembering- Students must remember the content to make an effective
Levels tutorial video.
Understanding- Students must be able to discuss their topic to teach it
effectively.
Applying- Students must be able to solve the problem they are giving a
walkthrough of.
Evaluating- Students must be able to defend their thinking if someone
questions their process.
Creating- Students produce a new video that walks their peers through
solving their problem.
Integration Level LoTi level 5: Expansion- students will make and edit a video on a problem
and then publish it to a website that allows other students and teachers to
interact with it.

Usage Plan To start off, the students will be taught how to use the website. This allows
the students to be able to complete their project without setbacks. I am doing
this because it isn’t uncommon for students to be unable to complete a
project because they don’t understand the technology. By giving an overview
beforehand, I will be able to guide my students on how to use the site. I would
then answer any additional questions.
I would then explain to my students what their project will be. I will be having
the students make their own tutorial video on a given problem. By having my
students do this, they will be getting feedback from peers outside of the
classroom. It is also really helpful for students to think through how they
would explain a problem. By having students explain a problem, they are able
to tell where they don’t understand as well.
Design Features a. Students will collaborate with their peers and those in similar focuses by
posting their thinking and having others outside of the classroom comment on
it so they can adjust.

b. The students will create an original product (a video) to post during the
lesson.

c. Students will have to thoroughly understand their topic in order to

thoroughly explain it as well as defend their stance if any comments believe
they are incorrect.
d. The other students that will view their videos will be in other algebra one
classes that could be anywhere.
Universal Design The students will be provided with options for perception as there will be
Rationale captions on the videos as well as visual and spoken elements. The students
will be working in groups which means that some students can focus on the
creation of the video (which will expose them to the content) while others
focus on a solution or visual representation. There are also options for
recruiting interest as the students can pick how they want their video to be.
Giving students creative freedom in a project allows for more interest to be
built. By allowing different ways to interact with the content as well as creative
freedom, students end up ore engaged.
Lesson Idea As I address the standards, I will ask students questions that lead them to
main ideas and expect the students to participate and answer during the
discussion. The project will be introduced by showing an example video I will
make myself. It will take three days in class to complete, but the expectation
is that students work on it at home as well. The student learning will be
assessed based on what level of understanding I observe when I watch their
video.
I will use the final product to differentiate learning by having the students who
demonstrated good understanding in their video help those that didn’t. I will
extend the learning to a higher level by having the students discuss their
thoughts on each other’s videos in class as well. I will conclude the lesson by
allowing the students to decide which video was the most helpful and why. I
will provide students with feedback through our LMS.
Internet Safety By using a site meant for educational usage and having the students use only
their voice while showing their writing in the video, my students will be more
protected. Because they are not showing their face or stating any identifying
information, it will follow Cobb’s internet usage policies.
Design Reflection I feel the activity I created can impact student learning by putting them in the
role of teacher which forces them to assess their understanding of the
subject. I think I could further extend the lesson by having the students create
a guided notes page for their peers to fill out as they watch their video. This
way, students would be required to actually engage with their peers’ work
rather than just zoning out. I think that a video editing software as well as
some sort of tablet with a writing program could extend this project.
