The Start Page window (Figure 1) opens when you first log on to KINGDOM. The Start Page T
for KINGDOM Core and Advanced differ slightly in appearance but offer the same options.

The Start Page window displays three areas, each of which allows you to perform specific tasks.
• Recent Projects - open recently accessed projects or create a new project.
• Getting Started - view What’s New features in this version, a list of online Tutorials, online
Help Topics, and a List Of KINGDOM Hot Keys.

Follow steps 1 - 4 below to open an existing project in KINGDOM. T
1. Select Start > Programs > The KINGDOM Software 8.4, or double-click the KINGDOM
icon on your desktop to open the Start Page.

2. Choose Project > Open Project from the menu bar or click Open: Project to open the Open
dialog box.
3. Navigate to the project folder containing the KINGDOM project and double-click
<Project>.tks to open the Select Author dialog box.
4. Select an author and click OK to simultaneously open the Project Tree and the Base Map for
the <Project>.tks project in the KINGDOM main window (Figure 2).

Note: If the Backup Reminder message appears, click Continue to open the project without
backing it up.

Note: If you have saved a previous session, the Open Session File dialog box opens.
Double-click the file name of the desired previous session that you want to open. If you do
not want to open a previous session, click Cancel to close the dialog box.

Tip: You can also open an existing project by clicking the project in the Recent Projects lists.
The Project Tree and the Base Map open simultaneously in the KINGDOM main
window (Figure 2).

To open an existing project in KINGDOM, follow these steps: T
1. Select Start > Programs > The KINGDOM Software 8.4, or double-click the KINGDOM
icon on your desktop to open the Start Page (Figure 1).

2. Choose Project > Create New Project from the menu bar or click Create: Project to open
the Create New Project dialog box.

Note: If you have another project open, you will be prompted to close the existing project.

3. Navigate to the folder where you want to create the project and enter the project name. In the
folder where you create the project, each project name must be unique.
4. Click Create to open the Author Name dialog box.
5. Enter an author name for the project and click OK to open the Select Project Database dialog
box.

Note: When you create a project, select an Administrator or high level designation (that is, the
company name or initials) for the author name. This author name is the name under which
all project level data is imported. These data are stored with the project and not in an
individual folder. All authors created subsequently have individual author folders in which
interpretations are stored.

6. Select the database that you will be using and click OK to open the Project Options dialog
box.
7. Enter the distance units and seismic datum elevations for your project and click OK to open a
message that asks if you want to use the coordinate system of an existing project.
8. Click Yes to search for an existing coordinate system or click No to start the project with an
undefined XY Projection Method and open the Project Tree and a blank Base Map in the
KINGDOM main window.

The menu bar and individual menus in the KINGDOM main window are dynamic and change T
according to the active (selected) window. In Figure 2, the Base Map is active; therefore the
menu item displayed on the far left of the main window menu bar is Map and the other items on
the main menu bar relate to the Base Map. When the Project Tree is the active window, the menu
item displayed on the far left of the main menu bar is Explore, and other menu items on the main
menu bar relate to the Project Tree, as shown in Figure 3.

Note: The text at the bottom of the Project Tree shows your current valid license(s). If you are
running KINGDOM as you follow this tutorial, EarthPAK or 2d/3dPAK-EarthPAK
should be displayed at the bottom of your Project Tree. If EarthPAK or 2d/3dPAK-
EarthPAK is not displayed at the bottom of the Project Tree, see How to Update
License Status to obtain an EarthPAK or 2d/3dPAK-EarthPAK license.

Following are illustrations and explanation of toolbars common to many KINGDOM T
applications.

Base Map - Viewing Toolbar


The figure below shows the Viewing toolbar. You can access the Viewing toolbar by choosing
View > Toolbars from a Base Map and then checking Viewing on the Toolbars dialog box.

Project>Project Options. The various
options are on the Level of Detail tab.

Ruler Opens the Ruler dialog box, which


allows you to digitize (draw) a line
(ruler) in English (feet) or Metric
(meters) units. You can digitize a
traverse or an enclosure. The length of
the traverse or the length of the
perimeter of an enclosure (at least three
lines) is displayed in miles or
kilometers in the Ruler dialog box.
Planimeter Polygon Opens the Planimeter dialog box,
which allows you to digitize (draw) a
polygon in English (feet) or Metric
(meters) units. The area within the
polygon is displayed in English units
(square feet, square miles or acres), or
Metric units (square meters, square
kilometers or hectares ) in the
Planimeter dialog box.

In a Base Map window, the Overpost Corrections toolbar provides options for dragging a I
posted well annotation to another position on the base map in order to eliminate clutter and T
improve readability. After annotation is corrected (moved or amended with additional text), it is
shown connected to its respective well symbol with a dashed line.
The icons on the Overpost Corrections toolbar in a Base Map window are shown below.

or Time Slice). By selecting the Next
Seed Line option you can use the
animation tool to scroll through the
data, stopping at each line in turn.
Interactive Forward Advances the animation by one
frame.

Forward Once Animates forward through the active


portion of the seismic volume one
time, showing each inline, crossline,
or slice.
Forward Animates front to back through the
seismic volume continuously. Click
the Pause icon to stop the cycle.
Oscillating Moves forward then backward
through the animation cycle
continuously. Click the Pause icon to
stop the cycle.
Backward Animates back to front through the
seismic volume continuously. Click
the Pause icon to stop the cycle.
Backward Once Animates back to front through the
active portion of the seismic volume

to the full available range

From the KINGDOM main window menu bar, click on View>Toolbars and check Project I
Operations to activate the Project Operation toolbar. T
The Project Operations toolbar contains standard Windows icons that perform a variety of basic
tasks.
The toolbar will automatically appear docked, meaning it is attached to the window. Undock the
toolbar by dragging it outside the window margin until a gray border appears. The toolbar can be
disabled by clicking on the [x] button in the upper right corner of the toolbar, or by unchecking
Project Operations in View>Toolbars.
The figure below shows the icons on the Project Operations toolbar for the KINGDOM main
window.

select an RTL file to print.

New Base Map Opens a new Base Map window.

New Vertical Display Opens the Select Vertical Display dialog box,
where you can select a seismic line for display. A
VSD window opens simultaneously with the line
displayed.
Project Options Opens the Project Options dialog box, where you
can specify various project parameter values.

User Preferences Opens the User Preferences dialog box, where you
can specify various preferences parameter values.

Select Wells to Display Opens the Select Wells to Display dialog box,
by List or Polygon where you can select wells to display from a list or
digitize a single polygon or multiple polygons
around wells in a survey.
Well Query Opens the Query Wells dialog box, where you can
query wells by various categories for a project or a
working set.

aliases, or copy or delete.
Edit Formation Tops Opens the Formation Tops dialog box, where you
can select a well and edit parameter values for the
formation tops in that well.
Fault Cut Management Opens the Fault Cut Management dialog box,
where you can create or display fault cuts, specify
property changes for a fault cut, or copy or delete
fault cuts.
Set Active Surface for Opens the Set Active Surface for Picking dialog
Picking box, where you can select from a list of previously
created horizons, faults or formation tops, and
activate the selection for picking or changes.
Create Grid Opens the Grid Data dialog box, where you can
select a data item to grid.

Zone Management Opens the Zone Management dialog box, where


you can create zones, specify property changes for a
zone, or delete zones.
Zone Attribute Opens the Zone Attribute Calculator dialog box,
Calculator where you can select numerous attributes to
calculate for a selected zone.

How to Set User Preferences


To set user preferences that are applied throughout the project, follow these steps:
1. From the Start Page, either choose Project > User Preferences from the main menu or click
User Preferences in the Tools section to open the User Preferences dialog box.

2. Update or change parameter values for each tab as desired.

Note: In the User Preferences dialog box, select a tab and click the Help button for an
explanation of the preferences displayed on that tab.

Tip: Click Apply after updating each tab before going to the next tab.

3. Click OK after you have finished specifying all your preferences.

If you have a standalone license and EarthPAK or 2d/3dPAK-EarthPAK is not listed at the T
bottom of the Project Tree, contact SMT to have your feature key updated to include EarthPAK or
2d/3dPAK-EarthPAK.
If you have a network version of KINGDOM software and neither EarthPAK nor 2d/3dPAK-
EarthPAK is listed, follow steps 1-5 below to update the feature key:
1. From the KINGDOM main window menu bar, choose Project > License Status to open a
dialog box displaying a warning message that the project will be closed, and inquiring “Do
you want to proceed?”
2. Click Yes to open the License Status dialog box as shown in Figure 10.

3. In the Feature Name list, click in the small circle adjacent to 2d/3dPAK - EarthPAK to
activate the 2d3dPAK and EarthPAK licenses E

4. Click OK to close the License Status dialog box. I

5. Choose Project > Open Project to open the Open dialog box in which you can navigate to
locate and open the desired project.
