Sampling Lab Acts

The document provides tables and examples to calculate sample sizes needed for prevalence surveys and disease detection studies. It includes a problem where a municipal veterinarian wants to estimate cryptosporidiosis prevalence among backyard pigs, with an expected rate of 20% and desired accuracy of 5% at 95% confidence. Using Table 1, the required sample size is 246 pigs. It also gives an example of detecting Trichinellosis on a farm with 1800 pigs and suspected infection rate of 2%. Using Table 2, the required sample size is 143 pigs.

I. Sample Size to Estimate Prevalence

A. Using a Table (Use Table 1)

Level of confidence 0.95

0.9 35 138 3457 345731

Problem:
A municipal veterinarian wishes to estimate the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis among
backyard pigs in his locality. How many pigsJ should be included in the sample so that the
prevalence may be estimated to within 5 percentage points of the true value with 95%
confidence, if it is known that the true rate is unlikely to exceed 20%?

Assumptions:
(a) Expected Prevalence: 20%
(b) Confidence Level: 95%
(c) Desired Accuracy: 5%

Answer
Using Table 1, a sample size of __246__would be needed.

| Sampling 1
Use the MS Excel Tool: Survey Calculations (worksheet n for Prevalence) and check
if you get the same answer.

B. Using MS Excel Tool

Note: Use Excel Tool “Survey Calculations” (worksheet n for Prevalence)

Problem:

The Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory will conduct several prevalence
studies in three municipalities. Calculate the adjusted sample size to give an estimate of
prevalence within 5% of the true value with 95% confidence:

II. Sample Size to Detect Disease in a Population
A. Using a Table (Use Table 2)
Problem:
You want to detect whether or not a farm of N= 1800 pigs is positive with regards to
Trichinellosis. If Trichinellosis is present, you suspect that about 2% of the animals will
be infected. Calculate the sample size at a confidence level of 95%.

Answer: __143__ animals

B. Using MS Excel Tool (same information as above)

Answer: __143__ animals

Note: Use Excel Tool “Survey Calculations” (worksheet n to Detect Disease)
