CONCEPT CHECKED:
1. Give incites about the historical evolution of prison system, and give the concepts of
penal colony.
My understanding of this matter is that the earliest records of the prison
system date back to 1000 BC. In the early historical civilization of Mesopotamia
and Egypt, I found it to be a very important milestone of the prison system
because it uplifts about primarily the detention centers built as underground
dungeons wherein offenders were held there until they were sentenced to either
death or slavery. Looking back on our significant evolution of the prison system,
we can manifest various changes and symbolic instances that up to this point are
significant. The prisons of ancient Greece were typically poorly isolated
structures in which inmates were locked inside and chained at their feet with a
straightforward wooden block. However, because visits from friends and family
were common, the Greek form of confinement was a little bit more humane. The
Roman prison system was extremely inhumane because it was primarily housed
in underground cells that were typically cramped, dark, and small. In the
meantime, houses of correction began operating in and around London by the
end of the 17th century, bringing about significant changes to the prison system.
In the United States, we refer to these facilities as correctional facilities that focus
on rehabilitating inmates and reintegrating them into society. This development
largely began with the Bridewell Prison, which was the first prison in England and
pioneered the use of separate cells and a classification system for inmates. On
the other hand, the idea of a penal colony can be seen in many different ways,
especially in the sense that a penal colony focuses on preventing a specific
individual from repeating a punishable act or from breaking the law in the same
way. In addition, it was made with the intention of reintegrating criminals into the
community and fostering greater community acceptance. To bring back a citizen
who values peace, knows nothing, and abides by the law. A penal colony is an
institution devoted to acclimating criminal offenders and protecting society from
crime, according to its concept.
