Part III (Reading Comprehension).

Directions: Read the following two passages and mark the most appropriate answer to
each question after the text.

Reading passage N 1.
When you are being interviewed for a job, remember that it’s normal for many
people to be nervous, particularly in such a stress-producing situation. There are plenty of
jobs, indeed most, where the interviewer expects the applicant to be a little bit nervous.
Although it can help to dry a damp forehead or sweaty hands just before meeting the
5 interviewer, don’t bee too concerned about whether or not your nervousness shows in
other ways. Experienced interviewers won’t pay attention to most physical signs of
nervousness. The only interviewees who call attention to their nervousness are those who
keep making nervous movements with their hands or who make other similar movements
with their bodies.
10 Remember that interviewers talk to people in order to hire, not because they enjoy
embarrassing uneasy applicants. One way to overcome an anxious feeling, or “butterflies
in the stomach”, is to remember that interviewers want to hire people who have something
to offer the company. If interviewers think you will fit into their organization, you will be
the one who they want to hire. It’s almost as if you are interviewing them to see if they are
15 good enough for you.
1. The passage suggests that a job interview is ___________________________.
a. often a stressful situation
b. always an enjoyable experience
c. usually boring for the interviewee

a. going from one place to another like a butterfly
b. dressing in an elaborate way and looking like a brightly colored butterfly
c. a nervous feeling in the stomach
d. being overweight and having a big stomach

3. According to the passage, the outward sign of nervousness that most attracts the
attention of interviewers is __________________.
a. wearing blue jeans b. speaking too quickly
c. nervous hand movements d. an upset stomach

4. The interviewer is someone who _________________________.

a. is looking for a job b. seeks facts from applicants
c. has already hired you d. is always trying to confuse applicants

5. The author of this passage suggests that overcoming nervousness is a matter of _____.
a. drying your forehead and hands before entering the interview
b. taking several tranquilizers before entering the interview
c. being dramatic and aggressive
d. realizing that the interviewer may be as eager to hire you as you are to get the job.

Reading passage N 2.
Rachel had one ambition: to do something important and exceptional with her life.
She wanted to help humanity and make a difference in the world. First, she tried to
become rich so that she could donate generous amounts of money to charity. Wanting to
make money quickly, she went to the races and gambled on all the long shots, but she lost
5 all the bets she made. Then she decided that rather than give money so that others would
make changes, she would try to help people directly. She took courses in group therapy
and counseling and tried to help others deal with their emotional problems. However, she

Spa. This resort, which is located in the scenic Rocky Mountains of Colorado, is
known for its unique approach to health and fitness.
5 The resort’s owner, Natalie Le Monde, explains that her establishment’s
outstanding reputation was earned after many years of proven success and guest
satisfaction. “Not only does a guest leave us with a healthier body, but also with a
more positive self-image. We teach that being healthy is a way of life, not simply
a new diet or exercise program”.
10 On a typical morning at the resort, guests wake up to a delicious breakfast
buffet. Throughout the day, they are encouraged to drink plenty of mineral water.
Resort nutritionist Paul Graham explains, “All our food is made from

Reading passage N 2.
Many wedding customs have been popular since ancient times. For example,
more than 2,000 years ago, Roman brides wore veils during their wedding
ceremonies. Bridal veils became popular in Great Britain and in North America
during the late 1700’s.
5 The custom of giving a wedding ring may also date back to the ancient
Romans. Roundness represented eternity in Roman times, and the presentation of
round wedding rings probably symbolized the idea that a man and a woman would be
united forever. Wearing the wedding ring on the ring finger of the left hand is another
old custom. People once thought that a vein or nerve ran directly from this finger to
10 the heart.
An old superstition says that a bride can ensure good luck by wearing
“something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Another
superstition is that it is bad luck for a bride and groom to see each other before the
wedding ceremony on the day of their marriage.
1. Wedding customs mentioned in the above passage include
a. the giving of wedding rings c. the father of the bride giving the bride away
b. standing under a wedding canopy d. a bridal shower

2. According to this passage, bridal veils became popular in both Great Britain and
North America
a. two thousand years ago c. in the 1700’s

3. The third paragraph suggests that superstitions

a. always bring good luck c. are evil
b. are silly d. last for a long time

4. According to the passage, the ancient Romans believed that

a. wedding rings had to be made of silver
b. round wedding rings symbolized the eternal unity of man and woman
c. without wedding rings people couldn’t get married
d. wedding rings were too expensive to use

5. The word ensure in paragraph 3 means

a. .to borrow something c. to make something certain to happen
b. to make something unsure d. to reassure someone.

each question after the text.

6. The passage suggests that a job interview is ___________________________.
e. often a stressful situation
f. always an enjoyable experience
g. usually boring for the interviewee
h. an experience where it is abnormal to be worried

7. In the passage, the expression “butterflies in the stomach” means ______________.

e. going from one place to another like a butterfly
f. dressing in an elaborate way and looking like a brightly colored butterfly
g. a nervous feeling in the stomach
h. being overweight and having a big stomach

8. According to the passage, the outward sign of nervousness that most attracts the
attention of interviewers is __________________.
a. wearing blue jeans b. speaking too quickly
c. nervous hand movements d. an upset stomach

9. The interviewer is someone who _________________________.

a. is looking for a job b. seeks facts from applicants
c. has already hired you d. is always trying to confuse applicants
