Korean uses its oㄳ /n unique alphabet called Hangeul. It is considered to be one of the Inost effic⊥ ent
alphabets in the world and has garnered unanilnous praise froln language expelts for its scientific
design and excellence.

IIangeu1 ㄳTas created under King Sojong duling the Joseon Dynasty (1393 —
1910). In 1446, the first
Kolean alphabet ㄲ7as proclaiIIiled under the original naⅡ le Hun— Inin— jeong‥ euㅍ 1, ㄳ

Hangeul consists of 14 consonants and 10 voㄳ Tels, totaling 24 basic characters. The shapes of Hangeu1’ s

consonants were fornled after voice organs (such as lip, tongue, throat, etc.) '지 Thile those of the voㄳ Tels
ㄳ/ere forlirled after '지 7hat one IIlight say sylnbolizes heaven, eη rth, and hulnan beings.

All wolds in Kolean are coIIlposed of syllables, which go by the following basic rules :

1. A syllable begins with a consonant.

2. A syllable has at ⊥
3. Each syllable gets ㄳ7ritten in a square box.

A syllal le that consists of a consonant and a is '^/Iitten with the consonant on the

ㄴ [n] + ㅏ[a] = 나 [na]

A sylI沚 )le that consists of a consonant and a horizontal voㄳ/e1’ is

If a syllable sho'ㅈ /s a consonant— vowel— consonant colnbination, in other '^Tords,

a consonant, called batchiⅡ 1 (IIIeaning supporting flool’ in Korean), the final consonant goes t0

Al1 symbols of Hangeul are written froIIl top to bottoln and froln left to right. Strokes are never
