The Aquaconversion process uses mild hydrogenation to suppress condensation reactions during thermal cracking of heavy crude residues. This allows higher conversion to distillates with lower asphaltene precipitation than traditional visbreaking. The process can upgrade extra heavy crudes to synthetic crude oil at the wellhead or replace/modify conventional visbreaking in refineries to increase fuel oil and distillate production with minimal additional investment. Pilot and commercial tests demonstrate its technical and economic viability.
