Have one member of your group create a Google Doc and add all members as
editors of the document.
Once everyone has access, think back to reading
“The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe. Scan through the poem (available on Schoology),
and identify as many literary devices as you can.
On the Google Doc, give the name of the literary device and
an example from the poem.
Literary
Devices
Simile
compares two things using “like” or “as”
Example: “Up above the world so high
like a diamond in the sky”
Metaphor
compares two things directly
Example: Life is a highway.
Alliteration
Repeating the first letter of the words
in a line or sentence
Example: Peter Piper picked a peck
of pickled peppers.
Hyperbole
Exaggeration typically not meant to be
taken literally
Example: Cry me a river.
Allusion
A reference to another literary work,
person, or historical event
Example: “You were Romeo, you were
throwing pebbles.”
Irony
Saying the opposite of what is literally
meant
Example: Saying, “What a beautiful
day,” when it is raining and cold.
Oxymoron
Contradictory terms used in
conjunction (together)
Example: “I’ve never heard silence
quite this loud.”
Personification
Giving human traits to an inanimate
object
Ex: The tree danced in the wind.
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds in words
Example: Mike’s bike has bright stripes.
Consonance
Repetition of consonant sounds in
words
Example: They found a bond that
transcends the beyond.
Symbolism
The use of symbols to represent ideas
or qualities
Example: The color red is typically
used to symbolize love or anger.
Repetition
Repeating something that has already
been said.
Example: The soup was stirred and
stirred until it was ready.
Anaphora
Repeating the first word or words of a
phrase
Example: This love is good, this love is
bad, this love is alive back from the
dead.
Epistrophe
Repeating the last word or words of a
phrase
Example: Sunshine or rain, I’ll be there.
Whether good times or bad, I’ll be
there.
Now that we have reviewed literary devices and examples, revisit the
literary devices you have listed on your Google Doc, and make any
necessary changes.
Log in to Canva using your school e-mail. Have one member from each group
create a document and add all members as editors.
Choose a 4-panel storyboard template.
For this storyboard, every panel needs to have the name of the literary device,
definition, example, a visual depiction of the example, and what the use of this
literary device adds to the poem/how the use of the literary
device strengthens the poem
Example of a Storyboard Panel
compares two
Metaphor things directly
You do not have to format your
storyboard panels exactly like this,
but make sure you have all of
the required information in each
of your panels.
Example: “Life is a highway.”
This phrase is used to mean that life has
many twists and turns, but it is a journey
that keeps going and we should enjoy
the ride.
