THE INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY
February 21 is the International Mother Language Day which is observed all over
the world. The day is historically related to Bangladesh. Once the Indian
subcontinent belonged to the British rule. In 1947, the subcontinent was divided
into India and Pakistan. Pakistan had two parts. One was East Pakistan and the
other was West Pakistan. But the people of East Pakistan were oppressed by the
government. Even they wanted to snatch away the mother tongue of the people
of East Pakistan. Mohammad Ali Zinnah, declared, "Urdu, and Urdu will be the
state language of Pakistan.” But the Bangalees protested against this claim
strongly..All the students of Dhaka University, brought out a procession violating
144 imposed by the government. The day was 21 February 1952. The police fired
openly on the students. Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, Jabbar, etc. sacrificed their lives for
the sake of their mother tongue. Now, the day is observed with due respect and
solemnity to the martyred heroic sons of this country. The day is a public holiday
all over the world. In our country, people from all walks of life offer floral wreaths
at the foot of Shaheed Minar. They sing the mournful song "Amar Bhaier Rokte
Rangano .... Pari." Various cultural organizations arrange different programmes
highlighting the heroic deed of martyred sons of the soil. Radio, TV air special
programms on this occasion. National dailies also bring cut special supplements
on this day. However, UNESCO in recognition of the sacrifices of the martyrs
for the rightful place of Bangla, proclaimed February 21 as the International
Mother Language Day to be observed all over the world. The day is annually
observed to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and
multilingualism.
Street Accident
Street accident is an ever raising trend in Bangladesh. We see the news of road
accident almost everyday in daily newspapers. Last week | witnessed a terrible
street accident at Shahbagh, Dhaka at about 11:00 am. At that time, | was going
to the Bangladesh Hospital to attend on my ailing friend. So, | witnessed the
accident standing very close to the spot. A long row of cars, taxis, tempos, buses,
autorickshaws, rickshaws, etc. were plying towards the north, and a similar row of
them were plying towards the south. A bus was coming up at top speed from the
south and | waited till it ran off past me. Just at that very moment, a rickshaw
ahead of me was hit by the bus and the rickshawpuller was thrown down under
its wheels. All this happened in the twinkling of an eye, | instantly rushed to
the spot, managed an ambulance and took the wounded rickshawpuller with the
help of some of other people to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The medicalofficer on duty declared th rickshawpuller to be dead. The wife and son of the
rickshawpuller, in the meantime, also rushed to the hospital. The hospital
authority conducted post-mortem and handed over the dead body them. The
accident was so shocking to me. It put a permanent shock in my mind. | could
hardly efface the face of the poor rickshawpuller from my memory. In fact, it is a
great harrowing experience in my life.
DEFORESTATION
The cutting down of trees indiscriminately is called deforestation. Man needs
houses, furniture, firewood, etc. For this, man uses wood. Wood is also used in
big industries, Man makes shops, educational institutions, boats, launches, trucks
and other vehicles that lead many people to cut down trees. It poses threat to our
environment. There are also many people engaged in trafficking trees from the
forests making vast areas almost desert and leaving many wild animals in danger.
All these have multifarious effects over the environment. Deforestation is very
closely related to environment pollution and the greenhouse effect. Trees absorb
carbon-dioxide and produce oxygen and thereby maintain a balanced
environment. But due to deforestation, the amount of carbon-dioxide is increasing
day by day. Consequently, various natural calamities such as flood, drought,
cyclone, Sidr, etc. are occurring very often on earth. And these are causes a great
damage to life and property. Floods and droughts, cyclones and tornados are the
common phenomena in a region or in a country where deforestation is going on.
In our country, less rainfall, excessive rainfall, bad harvest, soil erosion, extinction
of wild animals, the greenhouse effects are the problems prevailing owing to
deforestation. The low-lying countries will be adversely affected because of the
rising of the sea-level. Flash-flood will happen and it will destroy the crops of our
farmer. To prevent deforestation, some pragmatic steps should be taken. A social
movement should be launched to prevent deforestation. Social awareness can be
raised regarding adverse effects of deforestation. For this purpose, environment
science and study on ecology should be introduced at school level, Awareness
regarding tree plantation can be raisedthrough Internet based social media and
TV programmes. And above all, our forest department should execute all codes
of manner strictly at least to reduce deforestation to some extent.
Science Fair
A science fair is an event where students present their science projects and
experiments to a larger audience. These projects can be either experimental or
observational and can range from biology to physics, chemistry, engineering, and
environmental science. The main goal of a science fair is to encourage students
to explore science and develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.Science fairs typically take place at schools, universities, or other educational
institutions, and can be held at different levels, from local to national or even
international competitions. Students are usually judged based on the quality of
their projects, their presentation skills, and their ability to explain their work to
judges and other attendees. Science fairs also provide students with the
Opportunity to meet and learn from other young scientists, exchange ideas, and
potentially collaborate on future projects. Overall, science fairs are a great way to
promote science education and inspire the next generation of scientists and
innovators.
My Visit to a Place of Historical Interest
A historical place means a place which bears the testimony of history. It surely
has some important past events worth notable in history. A visit to a historical
place is not only interesting and exiting but also educative.Last winter, | visited
Bagerhat, a historical place. The place is famous for the Shat Gombuj Mosque
and the Mazar of Khan Jahan Ali. | along with my family started our journey
onnthe fixed day, and reached the destination after a five hours journey. When we
reached there at 12 pm. At first we went out to visit the Shat Gombuj Mosque and
the Majar of Khan Jahan Ali. We were surprised to see the architectural structures
of the mosque. It stands on sixty pillars and has seventy seven curved domes.
The area of mosque is very large and charming. We came to know that this
mosque was used not only as a prayer hall but also as a court of justice. There is
a long tank near the mosque named ‘Ghoradighi’. It is said that a horse was made
to run here before digging the canal. The mosque has been declared as a world
heritage site. In fact, this mosque is one of the greatest tourist attractions of
Bangladesh. We're amazedto see the unique design of the Mazar of Khan Jahan
Ali. The tomb is made of cutting stone. There is a big tank in front of the mazar.
There are some crocodiles in this big tank. When the caretaker called them, they
came near. It was a wonderful experience. Then we visited many social works of
Khan Jahan Ali such as roads, public buildings etc. It was a great pleasure for me
to be at Bagerhat. The sweet memory of this visit will remain ever fresh in my
mind.Paragraph of E2 test
ATea Stall
Atea stall is a small shop where tea is prepared and sold. It is seen on the
roadside, in markets, stations, terminals, etc. and everyone is acquainted with it.
In a tea stall, there are one or two long tables and some long benches on both
sides of the table. There is a cash counter where the owner or manager generally
sits. Biscuits, cakes, bread, cigarettes, etc. are sold in a tea stall. A tea stall opens
very early in the morning and closes very late at night. In some important places
like railway and steamer stations, the tea stall remains open round the clock.
Passengers, rickshaw pullers, officials, labourers, passers-by, students as well as
political workers are the customers in a tea stall. Some tea stalls prepare quality
tea. In a tea stall, one or two boys serve the customers with tea or other food
items they need. Political leaders and unemployed old people occupy seats and
gossip without caring for time factor. Politician discuss the current political
situations of home and abroad. So, a tea stall can be called political spot.
Moreover, people of all walks of life discuss their respective issues with one
another. In most of the tea stalls, a newspaper is kept and so people get
opportunity of reading a newspaper and knowing various current issues of home
and abroad. Thus, a tea stall is not only a centre of getting refreshed with
tea but also a place of being informed of various things and exchanging ideas for
people. The owner of the tea stall invests comparatively a little amount of money,
but his income is not less. At the same time, the owner gets informed of various
things from the discussion of the people and becomes wiser day by day.
NECESSITY OF LEARNING ENGLISH
English is now an international language. People all over the world use this
language as a medium of communication. In this age of globalisation, English is
our only window on the world outside. To be cut off from English will mean a
banishment from the world. Therefore, in order to keep pace with the
advancement of civilisation and maintain international relations, we should learn
English. For trade and commerce, we have to communicate with our business
partners and firms of other countries in English. All important things, findings of
scientific researches, teachings and philosophy of great scholars- all are
published mostly in English. Admission for higher studies in any foreign university
is not possible without a certain amount of proficiency in English language. Even
in our country fluency in written and spoken English is a prerequisite for good and
lucrative jobs. If we do not learn English, we shall fail in all these purposes and
eventually we shall have to pay very heavily for our neglect of this global
language. Our students do not find interest in learning English. They lack inmotivation and earnestness. In certain quarters, a false idea has somehow
developed that if we study English our mother tongue will be neglected. it is
encouraging to note that English has recently been given its due importance in
our education policy. The government may do well to faster the teaching and
learning of English by Instituting stipends and scholarship in the sphere.
TREE PLANTATION / IMPORTANCE OF TREES
Tree plantation means planting trees in large numbers throughout the country.
Trees are helpful to us in many ways. Trees produce oxygen and take in carbon
dioxide. And thus they maintain ecological balance. Trees give us food, oxygen,
furniture and fuel. We are aware woods and forests bring rain, help our agriculture
and prevent floods. If there were no trees, there would be no oxygen and life
would cease to exist. The thoughtless destruction of our trees. woods and forests
has put the country to a great disadvantage. They are destroyed mostly for
being used as firewood. This destruction disturbs our ecological balance. It leads
to soil erosion. It deprives us of fruits and timber and causes economic loss.
Besides, heat, pollution, flood. cyclone, famine, diseases, etc. are the results of
deforestation. So, to save mankind, we should take care of them. We should plant
more and more trees. This initiative may be taken jointly by. government and non
government organizations. We can plant trees in the vacant space around our
houses in the months of June and July, Trees can also be planted by the side of
roads, railway lines and highways. We should take care of trees by taking strict
steps against destroying or cutting trees illegally or indiscriminately. Government
should create awareness about the importance of trees among the general
masses to keep the earth greener, cleaner and safer. The awareness of the
general masses can play an effective role in protecting trees and preserving
forests.
Mobile Phone
Mobile phone is one of the amazing inventions of modern science. It is one kind
of portable telephone set. It works without any wire. In fact, it functions with the
help of the chips installed inside and connects to the mobile network outside.
With a mobile phone one can talk anywhere in the world within the shortest
possible time. The man who sends the message will have to pay the bill but the
receiver can respond to the message free of cost. Not only that, we can send
messages to distant places. play games and sports, solve the work of
calculation and can be aware of different kinds of news and views through it. The
use of a mobile phone is more convenient than that of land phone. Specially, businessmen and the servicemen are much benefited through the use of mobile
phone. It is useful for the doctor, businessmen and high officials. But it is also
useful for the people who are shopping and supplying valuable information sitting
in their house. The world is getting smaller in circumference due to the rapid
expansion of mobile phone. Now, man feels for each other and very close in
terms of exchange of views, information and counselling by the blessing of
mobile phone. In education, technical sectors, offices, industrial sectors, in
information sectors, above all in global communication, mobile phone plays a
very vital role. All professionals depend on mobile phone for keeping close
contact with one another for any urgent issue. Despite numerous advantages of
mobile phone, sometimes it becomes the cause of health hazard to the users.
Specially, the children are affected much. Scientists believe that mobile phone
causes brain tumours, genetic damage and many other incurable diseases.
Sometimes, the criminals use this phone to maintain their secrecy. By using the
mobile phone, the terrorists and criminals carry on their evil desires and commit
crimes without much difficulty. In spite of some such drawbacks, there is no
better alternative to mobile phone in communicating with people at home and
abroad.
A Winter Morning
There are six seasons in our country. Winter is one of them. It is a season of cold
and mist. So a winter morning is naturally cold and misty. It's usually a foggy
morning and there is dense fog all around. Sometimes, on a winter morning, the
fog is so dense that nothing can be seen even at a little distance. Even the sun
rays can't get through the fog. Everything is in the grip of dense fog and severe
cold. Nature looks gloomy and everything looks hazy. Bird's chirping is not heard.
Cows and other animals cannot corne out. In villages, people often collects dry
leaves, straws, woods and make fire to make themselves warm. People generally
get up late and are often late to their offices. When the sun rises unveiling the fog,
people especially the old and the children bask in the sun. The poor people
cannot afford warm clothes and they suffered the bitter cold. Dewdrops fallen on
the grass and leaves at night look like glittering pearls in the rays of the morning
sun. The date juice sellers are often found selling date juice. It is really enjoyable
to have a glass of date juice in a winter morning. People often enjoy various types
of delicious food items including different types of pithas and paes prepared from
date juice in a winter morning. The loggy scene of winter morning disappears as
the day advances. Even the fog melts away. Really a winter morning is enjoyable
to the rich but a curse to the poor for want of warm clothes.
