4. Design a wire rope for a elevator in a building60m high and for a total load of 20kN. The
speed of the elevator is 4m/sec and the full speed is reached in 10secs
5. A centrifugal pump running at 340rpm is to be driven by a 100kW motor running at
1440rpm. The drive is to work for at least 20hrs every day. The centre distance between the
motor shaft and the pump shaft is 1200mm. Suggest a suitable multiple V-belt drive for this

1. A pair of straight bevel gears consists of a 30 teeth pinion meshing with a 48 teeth
gear .The gears are mounted on shafts, which are interesting at right angle. The module at the
large end of the tooth is 4 mm. Calculate:
I. the pitch circle diameters of the pinion and the gear;
II. the pitch angles for the pinion and gear; and
III. the cone distance.

2. A pair of straight bevel gears has a velocity ratio of 2:1. The pitch circle diameter of the
pinion is 80 mm at the large end of the tooth. A 5 kW power is supplied to te pinion, which
rotates at 800 r.p.m. Te face width is 40 mm and the pressure angle 20°.Calculate te
tangential, radial and axial components of the resultant tooth force acting on the pinion. Page

3. A pair of worm gears is designated as 2/54/10/5. Calculate:


i. The centre distance;

4. A triple-threaded worm, having a lead of 70 mm meshes with a gear having 42 teeth and a
normal circular pitch of 22 mm. Find the centre distance between the shafts if they are 90°
apart.
5. A worm gear box with an effective surface area of 0.25 m².A fan is mounted on the worm
shaft to circulate air over the surface of the fins. The coefficient of heat transfer can be taken
as 25 W/m² °C. The permissible temperature rise of the lubricating oil above the atmospheric
temperature is 45°C. The coefficient of friction is 0.035 and the normal pressure angel is 20°.
The pair of worm gears is designated as: 1/40/10/4. Calculate te power transmitting capacity
based on thermal considerations.

1. The minimum and maximum speed of a six speed gear box are to be 160 and 500 r.p.m.
Construct the kinematic arrangement and the ay diagram of the gear box.
2. A nine speed gear box used as a head stock gear box of a turret late is to provide a speed
range of 180 r.p.m. to 800 r.p.m. Using standard step ratio, draw the speed diagram, and the
Kinematic layout. Also find and fix the number of teeth on all gears.
3. A gear box is to be designed to provide 12 output speeds ranging from 160 to 2000 r.p.m.
The input speed of motor is 1600 r.p.m. Choosing a standard speed ratio construct the speed
diagram and the kinematic arrangements.
4. A single plate clutch transmits 25 kW at 900 .p.m. The maximum pressure intensity between
te plates is 85 kN/m².Te ratio of radii is 1.25. Both the sides of the plate are effective and the
coefficient of friction is 0.25.Determine

1. Classification of brakes in details


2. A simple band brake is operated by a lever of length 500 mm long. Te brake drum as a
diameter of 500 mm and the brake band embraces 5/8 of the circumference. One end of the
band is attached to the fulcrum of the lever while the other is attached to a pin on the lever
100 mm from the fulcrum. If the effort applied to the end of the lever is 2000 N and the
coefficient of friction is 0.25, then design the simple band brake
3. A band brake acts on the ¾ of circumference of a drum of 450 mm diameter which is keyed
to the shaft. The band brake provides a braking torque of 225 N-m. one end of the band is
attached to a pin 100 mm from the fulcrum , as shown figure. If the operating force is
applied at 500 mm from the fulcrum and coefficient of friction is 0.25. Find the operating
force when the drum rotates in the
a) Anticlockwise direction, and
b) Clockwise direction.
4.In the band and block brake shown in figure, the band is lined with 12 blocks each of which
subtends an angle of 15° at the rotating drum. Te thickness of the block is 75 mm and the
diameter of the drum is 850 mm. If, when the bake is in action the greatest and least tensions
in the brake trap are T1 and T2 show that

the blocks to absorb 225 kW at 240 r.p.m. The coefficient of friction between the band and
