OF TECHNOLOGY)
UNDERSTANDING TECHNOLOGY (CONCEPT OF
TECHNOLOGY)
MEANING OF TECHNOLOGY
The word technology comes from Greek word
“Tekhnologie”, the word is coined from two Greek
words, “tekhnie” which means art, skill or craft and
“logia” which means an area of study. Thus,
Technology means literally, the study or science of
crafting.
Technology is a broad concept which can be
define in different ways. but in simple words,
technology can define as;
1.The application of scientific knowledge to solve
a problem or perform a specific function
2.The ways people use resources around them to
meet their wants and needs
Technology can also be refers to the tools,
machines, equipment, and techniques that are
developed and used by humans to solve
problems, improve efficiency, and make our lives
easier.
TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY
Technology of any nation or society falls any these
two types:
1. Under developed Technology or less develop
Technology
2. Developed or advanced Technology
1. UNDER DEVELOPED TECHNOLOGY:
Under developed technology is the technology
characterized by the use of human power and
crude implements, with high level of technological
dependence. Nations with Under developed
technology sells their natural resources because of
lack of infrastructure thereby starving their
economy. Technological development of these
country is low, the level of income is also low.
Therefore, most citizens live below the poverty
line. Most African countries such as Nigeria,
practice under developed technology.
2. DEVELOPED TECHNOLOGY:
Developed Technology is the technology
characterized by state-of-the-art production
processes using modern and sophisticated
machines and equipment. A country with
developed technology makes maximum use of
her natural resources which results in high
standard of living for her citizens. Nation that
practice developed technology include Japan,
Germany, USA, France, China, United
Kingdom,etc.
PRODUCTS OF TECHNOLOGY:
Product of technology refers to the materials,
machines and equipment that are used to make
life easier. They are finished products of
engineering works, the tools used to achieve
specific objectives. Examples of products of
technology are pressing iron, tractor, G.S.M/cell
phone, air conditioner, grinding machine, gas
cooker, washing machine, refrigerator, etc.
The use of hoes and cutlass has been replaced by
the use of tools and machines powered by steam,
water, wind, electricity and sun.

IMPORTANCE OF TECHNOLOGY
Technology has proved very useful in every area of
needs of mankind which include the following;
1. FOOD: Production and processing of food
have tremendously improved through
machinery. By this, preparation and cooking
of food have been made easier and quicker.
2. CLOTHING: Different quality of good clothing
materials and even ready-made clothing are
available as a result of technology. Sewing
machines in different types and sizes are also
available with the help of technology.
3. SHELTER: Building of different kinds of
modern houses is made possible through
technology.
4. TRANSPORTATION: Manufacturing of
bicycles, motor – cycles, motor-vehicles,
train, aircraft, ship, etc. have improved
transportation.
5. HEALTH CARE: Easy diagnosis and treatment
of diseases and sickness as a result of
modern clinic equipment such as
thermometer, stethoscope, X – ray machine
and scanner are also made possible through
technology.
6. COMMUNICATION: The use of telephone,
Internet, etc. has made communication easy,
fast and reliable
7. SECURITY: The production of guns, armored
car, CCTV, etc. has really enhanced security

CAREER
A career is a job that individuals choose to do for
long period of their life, especially one requiring
special training. It can also be described as a
profession that someone dedicates his or her life to
do.
TECHNOLOGY RELATED CAREERS
Technology related careers are job opportunities
that are available for technology professionals.
They are jobs that students of technology can do in
the future after acquiring necessary training and
skill in order to earn a living. These includes:
1. Mechanical Engineering
2. Civil Engineering
3. Electrical and electronic engineering
4. Computer engineering
5. Chemical engineering
6. Mining engineering
7. Petroleum engineering
8. Aeronautic engineering
IMPORTANCE OF TECHNOLOGY RELATED CAREERS
Technology related careers covers almost every
aspects of human life and these careers have made
important impacts on our society. These are
important for following reasons.
1. INNOVATION AND INVENTION: The
innovations and invention that human
society have witnessed are made mostly
possible through the support of technology
related careers. The human race is now
moving from rigorous and manual ways of
carrying out their activities to easy,
automatic and machined ways.
2. BUILDING OF INFRASTRUCTURE:
Infrastructures are facilities which make
human living comfortable and support
modern life. These are roads, bridges,
railways, water supply, sewage plants, cable
networks, business and government
buildings, electricity, etc. They are all made
possible through technology careers.
3. MANUFACTURING: Teams of engineers,
technologists, technicians, artisans and
craftsmen carries out production of goods
and services in industries and factories.
4. SECURITY: The equipment and service used
in ensuring safety of lives and properties are
produced and maintained by technology
related careers.
5. AGRICULTURE: The use of machines in
agricultural processes has enhanced
adequate supply of food. The construction,
operation and maintenance of these
machines are carried out by technology
related careers.
6. MEDICINE: The medical tools, equipment,
machines, hospital buildings and similar
medical facilities are produced and built by
technology related careers.
CAREERS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN TECHNOLOGY
Careers and opportunities in technology are some
of the most rewarding in the world considering the
demand and the need for technological
professionals in our world today. They are
described follow:
1. MECHANICAL ENGINERRING TECHNOLOGY
Mechanical engineering technology is a
profession that involves the research, design,
development, manufacturing and testing of
tools, machines, engines and many other
mechanical system and devices.
