Chapter 1 1) The writer starts with many contradictions. Explain The writer wants to highlight the differences between classes in England and France at that time. It was the best time for the rich (nobles) who were very rich & the worst time for the poor who were very poor. It was the age of wisdom, light, hope & luxuries for the rich & the age of foolishness, darkness, despair and misery for the poor. 2) In chapter (1) Dickens focused on the social conditions of people in both England & France. Explain In France power was in the hands of the king & the nobles (aristocrats) Farmers lived a miserable life & there was no chance for anyone else. In England, life was dangerous; Men with guns broke into houses & stole from the poor & the rich. Death was the easiest way to deal with problems. Criminals Murderers and thieves were hanged. Rich people didn’t understand that people stole because they were bad but because they were hungry. One day, poor people would stand up & say “Enough & the carts that would carry the aristocrats from prison to their death were being ready for use. 3) What was the message that Jerry from Tellson’s bank brought to Mr. Lorry? & What was his strange answer? It was to wait for Mademoiselle at Dover. Mr. Lorry’s strange answer was recalled to life. 4) What was on the letter that Miss Manette received from “Tellson’s bank”? -Lucie received a letter from Tellson’s Bank that there was information about her father’s small property and she had to travel to Paris with someone from the bank as she is an orphan. 5) Lam going to see his ghost. Comment -Lucie said that to Mr. Lorry when he told her that her father still alive. Lucie was shocked and didn’t say a word as she thought that her father was dead. 6) “I ama man of business. Really, I am a business machine and not much else. What I have to tell you is business’’. Comment -Mr. Lorry said that to Lucie when he went to meet her at Dover Inn, he introduced himself as a machine, he just lived for work at Tellson’s Bank. He told Lucie that her father was still alive. Chapter 2 1) What happened when the barrel of red wine was dropped & broken? Alll the people ran to drink the red wine mixed with mud. Their faces and their hands were stained with red wine. Some brought broken cups to fill them with wine. Others dipped their cloth into the wine and put it to their mouth. This shows how poor the people. 2) What did Gaspard do? What did this symbolize? Gaspard wrote the word “blood” on the wall in the street with the red wine that was spilt. One day, blood would spill in the streets of Paris this refers to the French revolution and the blood of the aristocrats. 3) “It isn’t often that these miserable creatures taste wine or anything except black bread & death. Comment Jacques 2 said that to Jacques (1) as they were talking about the barrel of wine that was dropped & broken in the street. The poor people ran to drink the wine mixed with mud. They only tasted black bread & death. This shows how people were living in poverty & misery. 4) Who were the Jacques? They are brave strong men preparing for the French Revolution, Jacques isn’t their real name, they hid their real names not to be known during the revolution, they met at Monsieur Defarge’s wine shop.Mr. Defarge was the leader of Jacques. 5) Why was Dr. Manette locked up? -He was locked up because he stayed for too long in prison with his door locked so he might hurt himself and would be frightened if his door was unlocked. 6)“I show him to a few people, those people who might do well by seeing him”. Comment. -Mr.Defarge said that to Mr.Lorry when Lorry was angry because he saw three men looking at Manette .Defarge told Lorry that he only showed him to few people (Jacques)to encourage them to start the French Revolution and to fill their hearts with anger. 7) “One Hundred and five North Tower,” Comment -Manette said that to Lorry when he asked him about his name,this was Manette’s cell number in prison and shows how long Manette was kept in prison for more than 18 years. 8) “Monsieur Manette be better out of France. Comment - Defarge said that to Lorry and Lucie as he wanted Manette to leave Paris because he knew that the revolution would start soon. 9) What does red wine stand for? -It stands for the blood which was spilt in the French Revolution. Chapter 3 1) What was Charles Darnay accused of? -He was accused of being a spy working for France against England. 2) What were the evidences against Charles Darnay? Darnay had been seen travelling between England and France several times. Lists of army information about the armies that the king of England was preparing to send to Canada & America were found in his pockets & in his room. Lucie said that he told her that he was travelling under a false name on secret business. She saw him exchanging papers with two Frenchmen. The 6" witness saw him exchanging papers with another man near an English army camp. 3) How were some of the witnesses of no value? John Barsad had been a spy himself and had been several times to prison. He was a gambler who used to borrow money from Darnay, but never paid it back. He was in debtor’s prison for many times. Robert Cly was accused of stealing many times before. Mr. Lorry didn’t notice anything because the weather was stormy & he spent the whole journey lying on a sofa. Dr. Manette couldn’t remember anything because he was suffering from loss of memory after his long imprisonment. 4) What was Sydney carton doing during the trial? -He was looking at the ceiling 5) How did Mr. Stryver prove that the new witness evidence was of no value? -He showed him the similarity between his assistant Carton and Darnay, so he could be mistaken as he might sce someone who looked like Damay in the hotel near the English Camp. 6) What would happen if a man was accused of treason? -He will be tied up, half hanged, he will be cut open and his sides will be taken out and bumt, his head will be cut off(quartering) 7) “Ifa man so like the prisoner is in this court, then another man, just like him might have been in the that hotel.” (comment) -Stryver said that to the 6" witness defending Damay in the court. He showed the witness the similarity between Darnay and Carton. Maybe it wasn’t Darnay who was in the hotel. 8) Not only Dr. Manette was recalled to life but also Darnay (Illustrate) -Manette was imprisoned in the Bastille for 18 years. Lucie thought that he was dead but he was set free and was still alive. Darnay was accused of treason. According to the law, he must be quartered, but the similarity between him and Carton had saved him. Chapter 4 1) I care for no man on earth, and no man on earth cares for me. Comment -Carton said that to Darnay in the tavem, Carton is a reckless and careless person, he cares for no one and no one cares for him. He was always in the shadow. 2) Sydney canton was jealous of Charles Dannay (illustrate). Although Carton looked like Damay, they were completely different, Carton was jealous as he felt the sympathy of Lucie towards Darnay. He was moody, reckless and careless 3)Although Sydney carton would never be a lion, he was a very good jackal. Explain Although Sydney carton was a man of great talent & quickness, he wasn’t a successful person while Stryver (the lion) received all the praise & credit. Carton was the one who told him about the Similarity between carton & Darnay. Carton gained nothing although he did all the work for Stryver. He was behind Stryver’s success. Carton appeared to be reckless and moody, he cared for no one and no one cared for him. He was always in the shadow. 4) What did Dr. Manette sometimes do in the middle of the night? -Sometimes he is troubled, he gets up in the middle of the night, walks around his room, Lucie walks with him until he is less troubled. 5) What did the storm symbolize for? It symbolizes for the French Revolution that will come strong and without mercy. 6) “When I have sat here, I have imagined that the footsteps are the footsteps of the people who will come into our lives.” (Comment) -Lucie said that to Manette and Darnay in their house. Lucie imagined the echo of the footsteps; it stands for the people who will enter Lucie and Manette’s life. -Write short notes on: 1-Miss Pross: She was an English woman, she took care of Lucie since she was a child, she loved Lucie so much and she was ready to do anything for her. 2-The echoing footsteps: the people who will enter Lucie’s and Manette’s life. Chapter 5 1) Why did the Marquis throw a coin to Gaspard? -The Marquis carriage passed over Gaspard’s son and killed him, he threw a coin to Gaspard as if he had broken something and paid for it and to repay his son’s death. 2) “It is better for the poor little thing to die like this than to live” Comment These words were said by Monsieur Defarge to Gaspard after the Marquis of Evernonde’s carriage passed over his child and killed him. The Marquis threw a coin to Gaspard as if he had broken a thing & paid for it. Defarge was trying to comfort Gaspard meaning that it was better for the little boy to die than to live a poor, miserable painful life. 3) The Marquis &his nephew Charles Darnay were apart in their ideas & actions. Discuss Charles Damay disapproved the deeds of his family. He was angry because his family had built their wealth & power on the suffering of the poor people. The Marquis wasn’t merciful man who treated the poor with great cruelty. Charles left France & went to England to work there. Darnay planned to give up alll his property & the land back to the poor villagers. 4) “I want only to fulfill my promise for my dear mother, which begged me to have mercy, to be compassionate & mend my family’s evil ways.” Comment Charles Darnay said that The Marquis when he met him and told him that he refuses the way his family treated the poor people. He told him that he promised his mother not to do the same mistakes of his father and uncle, so he decided to leave France, abandon his family’s name and start a new life in England under his Mother’s family name. He decided to leave all his property and land to the villagers. 5) The Marquis paid a precious price for his cruelty against the poor. Explain ‘As the Marquis didn’t show mercy towards the poor people when he ran over a killed a child under his coach’s wheels and showed no concer of the loss of a precious life of a child and the grief the child’s father felt, he had to pay a huge price for that which is his life. The child’s father “Gaspard” decided to take revenge from the Marquis, he killed him while sleeping by putting a knife in his heart with a note written on it “Drive him fast to his tomb.” 6)“Drive him fast to his tomb” this from Jacques. Comment It was the message Gaspard wrote after killing the Marquis. He killed the Marquis in his bed with a knife driven into his heart, around the handle of the knife was a piece of paper on which the message was written Gaspard killed the Marquis for killing his little son without caring or regret. 7)The marquis was a symbol of evil and tyranny. @iscuss) Charles Damay disapproved the deeds of his family. He was angry because his family had built their wealth and power on the suffering of the poor people. The Marquis wasn’t a merciful man who treated the poor with great cruelty. Charles left France and went to England to work there as a French teacher. Darnay planned to give up all his property and land back to the poor villagers. Chapter 6 1) What did Charles Darnay promise Dr. Manette after his conversation with him? He promised him not to separate him from Lucie and to tell him his real name on the morning of his marriage to Lucie, 2) What happened to Dr. Manette after his conversation with Charles Darnay? He returned back to shoemaking until Lucie came and calmed him down and brought him back to himself. 3) Always remember that there is a man who would give his life for you, or to keep those you love with you.” Comment Carton promised Lucie that he'd give his life to save her or the life of any person she loved and she should remember this all her life. Carton would fulfill his promise by the end of the story and prove that Lucie was right when she told Charles that he could do good & honourable things. 4) Why didn’t carton propose marring to Lucie? Because he knew that he wasn’t worthy of her. If he married her, he would make her miserable and unhappy. She would be sorry and would regret marrying him, 5) Charles Darnay proved that he was an honest man? He wanted to tell Dr. Manette about his real name and why he travelled to England, but Dr. Manette asked him not to tell him then and to tell him on the morning of his wedding. Chapter 1) How did Gaspard meet his death? Gaspard was in the middle of six soldiers, his arms were tied to his side. They took him to prison. He was kept in prison for a week then he was hanged an a gallow forty feet high above the fountain. His body was left for days. It was poisoning the water under his shadow. 2) “The chateau and the whole race.” (Extermination) Defarge said that to the Jacques when the road mender told them about what happened to Gaspard when he had taken his revenge. He was killed by the Marquis’ soldiers, so The Jacques decided to put the Marquis’ whole race on the list of destruction. 3) Why did John Barsad go to Monsieur Defarge wine shop? Barsad was a spy. He is now working for the aristocrats and the government. He went to the wine shop to know people’s reactions towards Gaspard’s death, 4) “If people use knives for such purposes, they must pay for it.” Comment Madame Defarge said these words to John Barsad when he came to the wine shop to know people’s reaction towards Gaspard’s death. Madame Defarge said that Gaspard deserved to be killed because he used a knife and killed she knew that Gaspard was a spy for the government & the aristocrats. 5)What news did Barsad give the Defarges? He told them that Lucie married Charles Darnay (the nephew of the Marquis). Defarge wasn’t happy as Damay’s name was on the list of destruction. 6) “I hope her husband will stay away from France” Comment Monsieur Defarge said these words to Madame Defarge after knowing that Lucie would marry Charles Darnay (nephew of Marquis) Monsicur Defarge was loyal to Dr. Manette his old master so he wished that Lucie & her husband be out of France when the revolution broke out because Damay’s name was on Madame Defarge list of destruction. Chapter 8 1) Who is Solomon? Solomon is Miss. Pross’ brother who had robbed her many years ago and disappeared, but she still loves him and she wished that her brother had married Lucie instead of Damay. 2) What happened to Dr. Manette while Lucie & Charles were on their honeymoon? Dr. Manette locked himself in his room for 9 days. He lost his memory. He returned back to be a shoemaker. He didn’t know anyone either Miss. Pross or Mr. Lorry. He recovered on the 10" day. 3)“It will not happen again because what he feared has happened the worst is over.” (Comment) Dr. Manette said that to Mr. Lorry when Dr. Manette lost his memory and returned to make shoes. It was the worst relapse happened to him. He promised Mr. Lorry that it would never happen again. Chapter 9 1) There are deep wounds in his heart, but he has a heart, and I am sure he is capable of good things, great and honourable things? a) Who was the speaker and to whom? b) How did the listener see the person they were talking about? c) What did the writer foreshadow on the speaker’s tongue? Lucie said that to Charles Darnay. They were talking about Sydney Carton. Damay saw Carton a reckless and careless person. The writer wanted to show that Carton will do many good and honourable things at the end of the story and that he has a great heart. 2) Describe the state of people of saint Antoine? The people were in a mad state. They rushed through the streets carried knives, sticks, axes, pieces of wood, stones, guns & anything could be used to Smash, fire & kill. They were hungry for killing & Nobody cared to live or die 3) Why did the patriots attack the Bastille? They attacked the Bastille as it was a symbol of injustice. They wanted to free the prisoners, destroy the instruments of torture, the records and the secret cells. 4) How did the governor of the Bastille meet his destination? People took him and with their fists, feets, and sticks brought him to the ground dead and Madame Defarge, with a long knife, cut his head off. 5) “Let him eat that grass” a) Who was the speaker & to whom? b) Whom did him refer to? & What happened to him. Mme Defarge said that to the crowd of people (patriots). She referred to Old Foulon. His hands were tied. They put grass in his mouth. He was raised to be hanged but the rope broke two times. The rope gave him mercy at the third time. His body was hanged and his neck was broken. Madame Defarge cut his head and it was put on a spike with his mouth filled with grass. 6) How does Dickens provide information or details to make the story realistic? It was realistic when Dickens built his novel on real historical events. He mentioned the date of the French Revolution which was in Mid-July 1789. He also wrote down attacking the Bastille and burning the Chateau. 7) What made the French revolution break out? Because people suffered from oppression. They had to pay heavy taxes. They also were put in prison without trials and there was injustice. 8) To what extent did Lucy understand the real nature of carton? Lucie knew that Carton deserved more respect and kindness. Carton had deep wounds in his heart, but he was able to do good, great and honourable things. 9) Revenge was an important keyword of “Tale of two Cities”. (Discuss) The Revolution represented the poor people who took their revenge against the aristocrats. They erupted with anger for the injustice, cruelty and oppression. Chapter 10 1) What was the signal which the stranger gave? The stranger took out a black-ended pipe, lit it and smoked it until the tobacco glowed brightly. When the French Revolution broke out, the people attacked the Bastille, killed the guards and the officers. They burnt the records, freed the prisoners and destroyed the torturing instruments.
