MODULE 5
BASIC DRAWING TOOLS
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the TLE 10 – Technical Drafting Module on Introduction
to Computer-Aided design System!
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed
by its Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou
Concepcion A. Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig
through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized
the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential
Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing this instructional resource.
This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5
Cs, namely: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and
Character while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box
in the body of the module:
Notes to the Teacher
This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use
this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:
Welcome to the TLE 10 – Technical Drafting Module on Introduction
to Computer-Aided design System!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time.
You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while
being an active learner.

Skills Assessment
Direction: Below are some pre-requisite and essential skills that a draftsman
should at least possess before exploring AutoCAD software. Kindly read each
item carefully and draw a check mark (/) on the column that corresponds to
your answer.

LESSON
LO 1. OPERATE CAD SOFTWARE AND COMPUTER HARDWARE
1.2 EXPLORE AUTOCAD WORKING ENVIRONMENT
1.2.2 BASIC DRAWING TOOLS
In AutoCAD every time you create a project, you always start with the
draw commands as the foundation of your drawing. Draw commands are used
in creating objects such as lines, arcs, and circles. Draw toolbars can be found
under Home tab of the ribbon. This are the basic of almost all AutoCAD
drawings. Familiarity with these commands is important if you want to gain
a full knowledge of this application.
As a beginner, this lesson will introduce you the most commonly used
draw commands such as line, polyline, arcs, circle, rectangle, polygon, donut,
spline, and ellipse. As you go along farther, you may also use more advanced
commands like multiline, revision cloud, hatch, etc. to deepen your knowledge
in this application.
Draw commands can be activated in a numerous ways. Command
names and shortcuts can be entered in the command line using the keyboard
or by simply clicking on the command icons at the draw toolbar depending on
your convenience. Your drawing skills and technique will improve as you
practice, as AutoCAD needs familiarization with its component to be well
acquainted with the program.
Below are some of the commonly used draw commands.
Note: Some of the draw commands will be discussed in the next part of this
lesson.
1. The Line Command
When you use the line command you can create or draw straight line
segment. You can do this by picking the first point and move the pointer or
crosshairs to the location of the second point. As you do this, you will see a
rubber band like string which shows you where the line will be drawn when
the second point is picked.
Command: LINE or L (enter)
Specify first point: (pick P1)
Specify next point: (pick P2)
2. The Polyline Command
A polyline is a connected series of segments created as a single object or
entity. The Polyline command or Pline or Pl is similar to the Line command.
In practice the Polyline command works in the same way as the Line
command allowing you to pick as many points as you like. Using Polyline
command, you can also create straight line segments, arc segments, or a
combination of the two.
Like with the Line command, you may also opt to automatically close a
polyline end to end by typing C to use the Close option.
Command: PLINE or PL [enter]
Specify start point: (pick P1)
Specify next point or: (pick P2)
Specify next point or: (pick P3)
Specify next point or: (pick P4)
Specify next point or: (pick P5)
Specify next point or: (pick P6)
Specify next point or [Arc/Close/
Half width/Length/Undo/Width]:
(or C to close)
3. The Rectangle Command
The Rectangle command creates a rectangular polyline whose sides are
vertical and horizontal from the specified rectangle parameters (length, width,
rotation) and the type of corners (fillet, chamfer, or square). The position and
size of the rectangle are defined by picking two diagonal corners. The rectangle
isn't really an AutoCAD object at all. It is, in fact, just a closed polyline which
is automatically drawn for you.
Command: RECTANG or REC [enter]
Specify first corner point or [Chamfer/
Elevation/Fillet/Thickness/Width]:
(pick P1)
Specify other corner point or
[Dimensions]: (pick P2)
The Rectangle command also has a
number of options. The Chamfer and Fillet
options have the same effect as the Chamfer and Fillet commands.
4. The Polygon Command
The Polygon command creates an equilateral closed polyline from 3 sides
up to 1024 sides. This command requires four inputs from the user, the
number of sides, a pick point for the center of the polygon, whether you want
the polygon inscribed or circumscribed and then a pick point which
determines both the radius of this imaginary circle and the orientation of the
polygon.
Command: POLYGON or POL [enter]
Enter number of sides <4>: type 6 for hexagon or six-sided polygon
Specify center of polygon or [Edge]: (pick P1 for center of Polygon or type
E to define by edge length)
Enter an option [Inscribed in circle/Circumscribed about circle] <I>:
(To accept the inscribed default or type C for circumscribed)
Specify radius of circle: (pick P2 or enter exact radius)
The difference between inscribed and circumscribed are shown in the
illustration.
NOTES:
Remember these things before during and after you work on your computer.
Handle computer with extra care;
No foods or drinks near the computer;
Keep your files in good order;
Log off properly every after use;
Unplug the computer when not in use;
Always save your work from time to time.
