MEP284: Measurement Lab
Exam consists of Four questions in one page. Total Marks: 25 Marks
Attempt all questions
1-
a) Define the following terms for engineering measurements;
- Accuracy -Precision - Zero drift - Precision error
(4 marks)
b) A metallic plate has a length of 9.5 meter with an accuracy of 0.09 meters. What does this
means to you and what is the total accurate length of the plate?
(2 marks)
c)A thermometer is used to measure the temperature of a static fluid. If the measured temperature
is 40 degrees with an absolute error of 1 degree. Calculate the relative error and the percentage
error. (2 marks)
2-
a)Air is moving in a duct with a velocity of 12 meters per second and its temperature is 30
degrees. Calculate the stagnation pressure of air if the static pressure is 1.1 bar .
(3 marks)
b) A straight pipe is connected to a liquid tank (Density of 900 kg/m3) having a diameter of 3 m.
The pipe has an inclination with the horizontal line and the diameter of the pipe is 20 cm.
Determine the angle of inclination? which will give a deflection of 5 m in the pipe for a gauge
pressure of 1 m water in the tank.
(3 marks)
3-
a) Describe the construction details of a total to static pitot tube and draw it inside a vertical pipe
of 20 cm diameter for the measurement of upward fluid flow. (4 marks)
b) Draw the shape of a bellow type pressure gauge that is used to measure the differential
pressure in a duct of constant area. (2 marks)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4-
a)Draw the main construction details of a Meriam laminar flow meter for the measurement of a
fluid flow. Write down the main constrains in the usage of that device.
(3 marks)
b)With the help of a neat sketch show the construction details of an optical device that is used for
the measurement of a pressure of a flowing fluid and mention the precautions that should be used
during measurements. (2 marks)
